Europa League Thread

Many of us probably predicted a European title returning to Madrid last summer, but not to Atletico.

250m euros spent and yet it's Atletico who bring back some silverware.

This.

"Second grade trophy" - teams like Juventus, Valencia, Bremen etc. play in this competition. Hardly second grade.

If you've been an Atletico fan, you'll know how it feels to underachieve everywhere. The Europa League is a step upwards, it's silverware, and I'm darn happy we didn't have to spend millions to get it.

Forlan didn't do anything tbh, it was all Aguero's shots, that he just guided home. Atletico the better team on the night - Fulham were good, but you could always see the difference.

Great play by Zamora on the first goal though, don't understand why Capello hasn't picked him for the probables.

Capello was going to pick him but he's been struggling with an achilles injury these last few weeks, so Zamora decided not to go.

He was clearly struggling in that final.

I meant "second tier" actually. Also I am sure Juve and Los Che aren't very happy that they are playing in it as opposed to the champions league.

Supporting Liverpool is not good for my health... They haven't won a single game since September 16.

At least today they got a decent result for the fans. 0-0 in Italy with a very weak team is commendable and they had a chance to win it had Babel not been the big waste of space that he is.

Yeah, Babel should have buried that one. I hope Malaga are serious about buying him or taking him in on loan. They can have Lucas for free as well.

Shelvey was impressive though. He wasn't very certain of his positioning, but he was by far the most influential Liverpool player.

Yeah Jonjo Shelvey was pretty impressive with his long balls and crosses and this guy Ezequiel Lavezzi was by far the best player to me at naples . Man you just got to admire his dribbling and killer pace and physically he is way too strong. From Liverpool's point of view , Jovanovic was brilliant and so was Shelvey. This ass cracking Ryan Babel been given so many chances to prove his stake at Anfield ws absolutely dreadful ther up, missed an absolute sitter late in the game, was awful in possession , just hoping he flings his way out of anfield by january

STEVENNNNN GERRAAAAAAAAAAARD! WHADDAPLAYER! Completely turned that one around and all by himself. It was a one man show.

Gerrard 3 Napoli 1.

Yeah great to see him back in form with a banging hat trick . To me our new signings all played a horrible game of football particularly Poulsen, who was responsible for conceding the first goal. meireles was horrible with his passes and ball control and Konchesky could not deliver a single cross perfectly . Shelvey was once again mightily impressive and substitute Nathan Eccleston somewhat injected spark in the left wing with some amazing dribbling skills . Spearing was horrible as well screwing up every single move on the counter attack and n'gog missed one too many chances yesterday

Shelvey impressive? Easily the worst player on the night.

Yeah Shelvey was awful. That header in the second half basically summed up why he failed to make any sort of impact. He was too eager for it in my opinion and tried too hard. Was also evident where he had that shot that ballooned over (even though he was offside) as he just seemed to be snatching at things too early.

Napoli have drawn Villareal. What a brilliant tie that's going to be. Villareal have played some technically outstanding football, rejuvenating the spark that was there under Pellegrini. Napoli have been a very interesting team to watch as well. They have a fantastic attack in Cavani, Lavezzi and the unpredictable but potentially brilliant Hamsik. Mazzarri has proven he's a very astute manager and it'll be a cracking game.
