Fifa 2010 World Cup: Round of 16

Lol @ Argentina-Mexico game being a good one. It was so dull and Mexico weren't even giving their 50% going forward in the second half and they were utterly demoralized and lost after that off-side goal of Tevez was given. Both teams were waiting for the final whistle to blow in the last 15 minutes. Mexico could have tried harder after they scored the first tbh.

To me it seemed like a group game.

You must have been watching a different game to me and the BBC's football experts then.

Relax mate. I know England's loss has made you touchy, but there is no need to be sniping at people. I obviously made the comment in jest. :facepalm
Chill out!

Apologies - my post didn't come across the way I meant it. Should've used a :).

Good stuff from Brazil yesterday.
Span vs Portugal is going to be EPIC! :D

I want Revenge for that Euro 2004 defeat.

This Portugal team isn't as good as 04, and this Spanish team is probably better. So you'd expect Spain to win. Portugal have been solid defensively, but someone with the class of Villa should be able to break through. Hopefully Torres hits some form too.

Portugal should've really won something with their last generation - Figo, Rui Costa, Maniche, Pauleta, Deco, Costinha.

Anywho, I want Spain to win, so my Spain, Germany, Brazil/Netherlands semi-final prediction stands. Those were the four teams I picked before the draw, but Netherlands and Brazil being in the same quarter(could've easily been Netherlands, Brazil and Spain, or Netherlands and Spain or Brazil and Spain) ruins that.

The Dutch are doing enough at the moment. They aren't as flashy as they usually are. Hopefully Brazil brings the best out of the Dutch.

Pity about Chile, great team to watch, and had high hopes for them after seeing a qualifier or two. Team's young though, so I'm sure we'll be seeing more of them.

Slovakia could also develop into a really good team. Hamsik was a bit disappointing this tournament, and he didn't light it up, except against Italy. Was much better in the qualifiers. Still, this Slovak team has a good future with Hamsik and Stoch probably the standouts, while there are some other solid youngsters too.

If Paraguay goes through there will be four South American teams in the quarterfinals. There is also one African team and there will be three European teams.

It seems that Paraguay vs Japan is going to extra time. It's still 0-0.

Penalties at the moment. Neither side deserves to go out but someone will have to in probably the fairest way to separate the sides. 2-2 so far.

Paraguay win it. A South American side in each of the four quarter finals...

The really worrying this is, both of these two teams would probably also have beaten England.

So, Sepp Blatter is finally listening to sense and is going to review goal line tech. Thanks, Sepp - would've been nice if you'd done it before the tournament. :sarcasm

I expected Paraguay to be in the quarterfinals, but not like this.

Anyway, a big match is up next: Spain vs Portugal.

Brazil to win it now for me. As long as it's not Germany or Argentina, I don't really mind.

Ahhhhhhhh penalties. They are always a dicey affair. Kinda sad Japan had to go out like this. Well super excited for the next match! :)

Both teams came out with a very defensive approach and it probably took both teams at least 15 minutes to take the ball forward and even when they took it forward there was no chance to break through because they were all up for defending, this is just not like a world cup knock-out match :facepalm Uruguay vs. S. Korea was an awesome game, this WC needs more games like that.

But I am expecting Portugal vs. Spain to be a cracker, it's just great rivalry. I just get the feeling that this one will also go into the extra time.

Heartbreak for the Japanese. But the extra time and penalties could give an advantage to either Spain or Portugal in the quarter final provided they themselves do not play another 30 minutes. Looking forward to the match later. :laugh

I can see Portugal winning this one. Xavi will probably struggle to get into the game considering a) he's playing a more unfamiliar role compared to at Barca where he is deeper and dictates the game and b) the centre will be crowded with 3 central midfielders from Portugal and also Spanish players probably cutting inside. If Spain can't spread the play enough then they'll struggle because the fullbacks can't really get that far forward considering the threat of Portugal's wingers.
