Fifa 2010 World Cup: Round of 16

4. We must have a tough Englishman in charge of the National team from now on - but not as tough as Capello. He overdid it - I think his restrictions on the players were far too severe, there was obviously unrest between players and manager. If we ever do go for a foreigner again, he must speak fluent and understandable English! The players must have been saying things like 'what's he on about now?' Regardless of whether Stuart Pearce or whoever translates, that must lower respect for the manager. As well as that, Capello has been proven to have no flexibility at all, even though the system he played clearly wasn't working. Rooney plays up front on his own at Utd, with a creative midfielder just off him - it works a treat, both in Europe and domestic football. Steven Gerrard - just off Torres - and he's fantastic - yet come the World Cup, and both players never played in their best position, not once..

Agree to disagree here my friend.

I personally dont blame Capello for sticking with the tried & trusted formation he developed that was working perfectly for him for 2 years in WCQ & friendlies. As i mentioned in my previous its was the England players continous chocking on the world stage - that has again risen up & crippled the players & Capello's plans.

We need that kind of local manager indeed. But unless that academy @ Burton is created & we start developing coaches. We aint going to get one in the near future. Since as you know only Hodgson & Rednapp are the good English managers about & they are old already & will be gone just now.

@Dr Pepper:

Capello played our two best players out of position. He barely gave our best player at the last World Cup (Joe Cole) a look in. He put on SWP for a fullback, and Heskey on when we needed goals - a man who can't hit a barn door. He made some poor choices for the squad - where was the goal poacher other than Defoe?

Lennon was one of England's best players throughout qualifying and through the season. Gerrard playing on the left was the right idea as well. Him drifting inside (he pretty much had a free role!) allowing Cole to overlap into acres of space was a great idea. His inability to pass in the first two games had nothing to do with his position. Who was the other player out of position? SWP being brought on was the last roll of the dice when England were most certainly out. I agree bringing on Heskey was a poor decision but I did say he got it nearly all right. Should an international team of the calibre of England be relying on specialised roles such as poachers and target men? In the era of hybrid players such as Ronaldo, Messi etc, England are still relying on specialised positions. This sums up England at the World Stage. Miles behind everyone else.

While I understand and support a foreigner cap, I don't think the Bundesliga, La Liga or Serie A have any such thing as well. All those talented youngsters should get into the side on merit.

Ozil looks good regardless what you throw at him. I've seen him play at Bremen all season, and he's looked brilliant in every single match that he's played. Always looks a threat, very consistent and during the second part of the season, Ozil and Marin linked up extremely well to set up a lot of goals, and score some themselves. Which is why I want to see Marin on the wing, but with Muller performing, Marin won't get the opportunity. The key to beating Germany is nullifying Mesut Ozil. The guy is pulling all the strings. Just my opinion. Not saying the others aren't playing well. Just saying Ozil is that damn good.

I thought Joe Cole should've started today on the left and Milner on the right, with Gerrard being dropped, and Lampard in the centre. Also, Dawson should've started, but those 2 changes were never going to happen. Capello is a good manager. He's won a championship with every team he's managed before this(I think). But, the question remains...what next for England? Who are the players who are impressing and are going to be the core of England for the next World Cup? I like Milner. I think he's quite underrated, and although his crossing was off today, perhaps playing him in a central role would be more beneficial. But, I really can't pick anyone else. Baines? Perhaps. Adam Johnson is exciting. But, yeah, I think the 5 foreigners a side rule really needs to come into play in the Premier League if England want to move forward.

James was solid, but surely Hart deserves a run now? Neuer was fabulous in the German goal. He was always highly rated, and had major potential, but some great saves today. If Enke(RIP) hadn't done what he did, Germany would have had 3 extremely good keepers in Enke, Adler(injured) and Neuer. Consider the fact that Neuer was 3rd choice a year ago, but potentially, Manuel Neuer is the best of the lot, imo.

Final thoughts? Deutschland 2010. Hopefully.

To make matters worse, just heard Fabio "There's A Horse's Head In My Bed" Capello talk about how well England played.......goodbye sir, goodbye.

In all fairness, he said that we played well between our goal and the Lampard 'goal' - which we did. After that, and before that, we were dire.

Edit: What's with all these Indians wanted Germany to win the Cup? I'm seeing them at other forums as well. Not having a go - just curious.

I'm really not sure now to be honest - maybe now is the time to just stick with one man for a bit and see what happens after the Euros. I don't know.

For example, German clubs must pick 12 home-grown players in their matchday squads, whereas the Premier League conforms to Uefa's rule of eight out of a 25-man squad - and even then that can mean including foreign nationals as long as they have trained for three years at a Premier League club's academy.

From this article:

BBC - David Bond: German's rich pedigree casts large shadow

Edit: Looking forwards to seeing our new Mexican in action...

@M Vaughan: Let's take Man City as an example. They can buy anyone they want - before long, their lineup will be flooded with top International stars. How can young English players (or any other nations's youngsters for that matter) compete? I mentioned our new Mexican, but he won't keep out a top young English talent at our club - but proven top level stars would. As for mentioning Serie A - they're in as much need of a foreigner cap as we are. :laugh

Low also revealed the tactics he used to exploit England's weaknesses. "We knew that the midfielders - Gerrard and Lampard - always support the forwards and that their midfield would be open," he said. "We knew there would be spaces.

"Our objective was to set Terry up with Klose to force him to come out of the defence. We knew the full-backs would be very much to the side, and that would create space that we could penetrate. We could have been 3-0 up in the first half because we did penetrate them.

They made it look so easy as well and did it time and time again.

Its time England appoint a new coach and captain. Give chances to the likes of Rodwell, Wilshere, Walcott, Adam Johnson, Smalling, Cattermole, Tomkins, Agbonlahor, Welbeck, Naughton, Gibbs, Cleverley, Delph, Rose etc.

All are unproven in some way or the other.

- Rodwell yea is big one for the future. Not sure what his best position is yet though although based on what i've seen for Everton.

- Wilshire is the next Joe Cole in alot of ways. But he aint the complete article just yet. EUR0 2012 may be a bit too soon for him. But i depends on what he does for the next 2 seasons.

- Walcott, we know what he can do. Hopefully he stays injury free a finds his form in the EURO 2012 qualifiers.

- Johnson yes. A natural left-winger with pace. Definately should be in our next squad.

- Agbonlahor. Has pace to burn. But he has sort of been disappointing for Villa in that he isn't scoring goals consistently. But i wont mind seeing him in the national team consistenly.

- Gibbs yea. Quality young full-back. A ready made replacement for Cole when he begins to decline. Should be Cole's # 2 from now on instead of Baines or Warnock.

Not sure about the rest of the names you mentioned though.

Other to really talk about are:

1. Andy Carolll: A nice tall stiker who looks like he could be the real deal.

2. Steven Taylor. Definately a future defender.

3. David Wheater. Another clear future defender.

4. Micah Richards. Has regressed alot in recent seasons. But is clealry one of the most talented young defenders we have, he needs to get on his A-Game fast.

But even so thats pretty limited. English football is stuck now..

Man i dont know either my friend. I dont want to even try & play manager because as i said unless the players whether its this outgoing generation or future youngers. Fix their mental framework - no tactic will work. But....ill have a go & what the best EURO 2012 XI could be like:

-------------------------------Hart---------------------------------------

M Richards------------Terry------------Dawson---------------------A Cole

----------------------Hargreaves------Barry------------------------------

Walcott/Lennon-----------------Gerrard-------------------------A Johnson

-------------------------------Rooney------------------------------------

We might as well groom Hart to be long term # 1 now. James was good - but @ age 39 his tournament days are done obviously.

Johnson is poor defensively as a right-back. Must be dropped. Richards is the only replacement i can think of. But he needs to get his head together ASAP, such a talent.

I hope what i saw from Terry is a one-off shocker. Since he was shocking today. But unless he declines considerbaly for Chelsea in the next two seasons - he will remain our key defender.

I worry Ferdinands days as a international player could be numbered. Since i fear his back injury may have killed his pace. So ATS, Dawson after coming on great this season if he keeps it up - may become a international regular. But who knows man..:facepalm

We need Hargreaves back so much. Hopefully, the last 2 years out means. He can put in some extra years for club & country. Hargreaves/Barry in mid-field in modern 4-2-3-1 formation is the best i can think of right now.

Finally we need pace down the flanks. Walcott, Lennon & Johnson are key to that.

Unsure about Caroll and Richards. Yes Adam Johnson, yes Wheater, yes Taylor. And I know people will say I'm biased towards him, but Connor Wickham has such a bright future ahead of him, provided he stays at Ipswich for a couple more years, before moving into the Premiership for two. He will be an England striker, no doubt; just hope he doesn't become a nearly-man like Darren Bent seems to have done.

Terrible refereeing again... Clearly offside.

Yeah the refereeing in general at this WC has been pretty poor. There've always been howlers, but I feel like there are a lot more in this one.

My understanding of Spanish isn't that great but I think the commentators were saying that even if the ref wanted to overturn the decision (seeing as the Mexican players were protesting) he didn't have the authority to do so.

Ah so that is what strikers do: they run, cause havoc, charge down, help midfield, run into spaces, put themselves about, strut, run at defences, make people unsure, decoy,................anyone from the England setup watching this game........

After watching Germany and England game. I was yawning throughout the Argentina vs Mexico game :p

Yes and Yes. Now I'll freely admit that I am a passionate Newcastle fan but only really follow them. I have watched Carrol and Taylor very closely plus seem them live and one thing I can say is that if you stuck them in an England shirt they would be giving 110% even if their leg dropped off. That is the difference in the current crop of players. The way Rooney was playing today I would happily have swapped Carrol for him because Carrol whilst no where near in regards to first touch, ability etc would have definetly got a lot more involved.

One name that also should be mentioned for the future is Nile Ranger. I'm calling it now he is just like Owen, a real one for the future.

Great, now the Aussies know that Germany are actually really good.
