Fifa 2010 World Cup: Round of 16

Germany vs England is about to start after 8 hours. Of course many websites are opening up the past.

Here is an interesting fact:

Germany v England

- Germany have never gone more than 20 years between winning World Cups - their last victory was in 1990.
- They have reached the last eight in every World Cup they have competed in, except in 1938, when they were eliminated in the last 16 by Switzerland.
- Germany have the best record in penalty shoot-outs in the World Cup - winning all four previous attempts against France (1982), Mexico (1986), England (1990) and Argentina (2006). They have scored 17 of 18 penalties in shootouts, including their last 14 in a row since Uli Stielike's miss in 1982.

- They are unbeaten in their last eight World Cup matches, excluding penalty shootouts, their best ever run in the tournament (beating their seven-game unbeaten run between 1966 and 1970).
- England have the worst record in penalty shootouts at the World Cup - losing all three previous attempts against West Germany (1990), Argentina (1998) and Portugal (2006). They have scored seven and missed seven of their previous 14 penalties.

Germany v England

Desperate England fans have been queuing outside the Fifa ticketing centre in Bloemfontein hoping to snap up tickets for Sunday's match against Germany.

Up to 1,000 tickets will be released for sale and 19-year-old student James Godwin said: "It will be like getting hold of a golden ticket to Willie Wonka's chocolate factory. The tickets are gold dust.

Meanwhile the "luckiest football fan in the world" has set a new World Cup world record for attending the most matches. Thulani Ngcobo, 29, has already beaten the previous record of 17, and after visiting two more stadiums today he will have seen 20 full matches.

A German view on English football

What the fearsome tweak!? How can you miss that? Your job is to watch for exactly that.

England's defence just way too slow for this German attack.

Good stuff from the Germans, didn't watch the whole game, damn stream, but got guests, so will post my thoughts later.

England should feel hard done by with that decision in the first half but you could say that they didn't really deserve to win with that sort of defending. It was absolutely horrible. They were far too slow and gave the Germans far too much space to play their through balls.

Rooney was still relatively ineffective in this match. Milner was good but his crosses were lacking. Gerrard was perhaps England's best player along with Lampard but perhaps he took one shot too many. Terry and Upson were without doubt way below par today, especially Upson. I bet Carragher would have been able to clear the ball for a corner to stop the first goal. He is great in those situations with his sliding tackles.

Summary of my feelings at the mo. Can't be bothered to type anything:

:noway:facepalm:crying:mad::eek:

What a game! Brilliant match! :)
I thoroughly enjoyed the match as a football fan!
I think England payed the price of losing Rio Ferdinand. Upson was tormented by Klose whenever the opportunity presented itself.
England were also unlucky in the first half. A clear goal was missed by the referees :facepalm
Even in the second-half Lampard's shots hit the crossbar!
Overall the Germans were clearly quicker than their counterpart. I liked the German's counter-attacking game. There was a quick and smooth transition from defence to offence. They took their chances well.
England were played extremely well too, but I think the German were slightly the better team today.
I was surprised at Milner's Substitution though. He was threatening the German camp regularly. Did he receive a knock of some sort?

Wow Germany! They were toying with the English players after they scored 4 goals.

David James and John Terry = Absolute thrash.

Instead of cribbing about that disallowed goal, England should accept the fact that they were outsmarted and outpaced today by a young, energetic and exciting German side.

I am expecting Argentina to beat Mexico later tonight (with Pipita grabbing a brace), so the Germany-Argentina QF should be an awesome game.

I think its rather harsh to say that about David James. His defenders let him down. Not saying that David James couldn't have been better though.

England are pathetic and Rooney was disgraceful. He was pathetic and I never want to see him in an England shirt again if he plays to that standard. If Man U fans say it wasn't his fault or make excuses for him they are not real England supporters. I'm so disgusted by that performance and full credit to the Germans they made us look as disgraceful as we really are....!!! No one can slag off David James, he was the best player on that pitch and did a superb job considering the crap he had playing in front of him

Klose shouldn't have scored, James could have been more alert. Even though it was a great run by the veteran, defenders could have stopped him but still I think James could have done better but Podolski's goal was very skillful though.

The last two goals by Muller just exposed the horrible English defense.

Agreed about Rooney and James. I literally thumped the TV twice when confronted with the abject mess that is Wayne Rooney. No spirit, no fight, just a childish wandering about with an air "well this has nothing to with me". Look at all the German goals except the first. Loss of possession in their half, in their penalty area or there abouts.

Germany were much better we were terrible. Even if three goals had been disallowed we were completely and utterly outplayed. I have never been so frustrated and disappointed with an England team.

What a shambolic performance by England especially their back four. Caught completely cold for the first goal and it was not any better for the second goal. As for the other two goals, well it showed the lack of pace in the England players. Capello tried to do the right thing by bringing on Joe Cole but it kinda late by then and I'm not sure whether taking off James Milner was the right thing to do. Also, Lampard's goal should have stood but thanks to some particular fellow in FIFA, there is no video technology around!

Anyway, fair play to the Germans. They played well and took advantage of England's weaknesses. Hope to see Germany against Argentina in the quarter final. That would be some match. :laugh
