FOOTBALL Football Manager Discussion

View some of the FM forums like the Sports Interactive Community or Sortitoutsi. Find a decent tactic, buy players you need, gel a good side together and win. That's it in a nutshell. Never been able to do it myself, despite playing the game for years :p

Jesus Christ, did you read everyone of those pages? There's like a 100 in that download.

But I am having some serious problems with scoring at the moment. Since putting 4 past Ajax, I have only scored 5 in the past 5 games. Now I know overall it doesn't actually sound like a bad goal scoring ratio put my current highest scorer is Nani with 4 and then 5 stuck on 2 goals in all competitions.

But the problem I am having is the amount of shots vs goals scored ratio at the moment. Lemme go through it game by game:

vs Blackpool @ Old Trafford. 3 goals, 27 shots with 14 on target.
vs Man City @ C.O.M.S. 1 goal, 14 shots with 6 on target.
vs Tottenham @ White Hart Lane. 0 goals, 18 shots with 8 on target.
vs Rubin @ Rubin. 1 goal, 17 shots with 3 on target.
vs Liverpool @ O.T. 0 goals, 6 shots with 3 on target. (This game is a bit of an anomaly because I ended up playing Ozil alone up front after Berba and Owen both got injured.

I usually play Berba as a Deep Lying Forward, Rooney as a Trequartista, although sometimes I play him as a target man. Owen as a Poacher and Chicha as a Poacher as well. But yet I'm still not getting any goals on them even though I am having loads of shots. Any ideas?

I read through the bits I wanted to read. Skipped quite a bit of it. Mostly read about the player roles, different philosophies and different teams tactics.

In this new FM I find that you have a lot of shots no matter what if you're a big team. How many of these shots were actually clear cut chances? How many long shots are you taking? It could be that you're just shooting at sight rather than working it into the box.

Yeah this.

Trequartista, if I recall correctly has long shots set to often and it makes them drop deeper.

For me I'd set Rooney as Advanced Striker or Complete Striker set to attack. Or you could go advanced and ask Rooney to shoot from distance less.

In other news I really got an urging to start going on this again what with the new season starting. Carrying on a Sunderland game that I started yonks ago I've had a pretty decent run. We were predicted to be struggling to stay up but at the moment I've got us 11th after 31 games with 9th position only having one point more; 8th having two points more.

If we have a really good run in I think there's half a chance of getting into Europe which financially would be very handy.

I have pubically come out and told him not to shoot from distance as much, but he is currently on a few games rest. Found that Chica has been my best striker so far.

I like to have work ball into box. My current Liverpool team in my 4th season is:

-----------Reina
Johnson-Kaboul-Mexes-Nestor

-----Witsel--Mascherano
Hamsik---Gerrard
---------Dzeko-----Torres

Witsel is deep lying playmaker, Mascherano ball winning. Hamsik is attacking midfielder and Gerrard advanced playmaker. Dzeko is an advanced forward and Torres a poacher.

I've scored 14 goals in my first 5 games of the season. Gerrard has been immense, scored 38 goals in the first season and is still getting over 15 every campaign. Won the FA Cup last year. Also won 2 community shields.

91 points in the league, still finished second to Linfield. They finished on 93 points. Five consecutive years of finishing second. :(

Still, had my best season undoubtedly. Won the Irish Cup, the League Cup, the County Antrim Shield, the Setanta Cup and beat Dinamo Kiev, Lazio and H-Tel Aviv in Europe as I qualified from my group in the Europa League before losing in the 1st Knockout Round.

Hopefully next season I will be able to break through and finally win. It's getting a bit frustrating, finishing second so often.

Also broke the record for most games won in a row, we have won our past 17 games going into the break although it will be tough to continue that streak with Europa League qualifiers to start the season.

Think I may have found my tactic, have now played it twice. 1st time was against Inter Milan at home and beat them 5-1 and the 2nd times is in my current game against West Ham where we are 4-0 up after 75 minutes. The weird thing is that both times Nani has scored a hattrick.

I seem to have perfected my rigid, counter attacking tactics but I keep failing in my attempts to create an attacking, free scoring tactic.

I finished that game 5-0 in the end, Nani scored a 4th but it was disallowed for offside. It was a period of 3 games in which I used it, the first was against Inter when I stuffed them 5-1 at OT. Then I went back to my original style and lost 2-1 to Newcastle before switching back to the formation and beating the Hammers 5-0. As I said Nani has scored 6 goals in that formation and now has 11 from 15 in all competitions!

Drogba was having a poor start to 09/10 season. Was only assisting Lampard and Ballack. He scored his first goal after 3-4 games. Again after a gap of 3 matches he scored 2 goals against Aston Villa. And after that two goals no one has been able to stop him thus far. Scoring twice for Ivory Coast in one of their WCQ game. And another one in the following WCQ match. He returned to Chelsea and scored 1 more goal. Then we went into the game against Manchester City and this happened :p -

Go Drogba!!!! He now has 7 goals and 4 assist in 10 appearance for us.

Doesn't beat Nani who now has 15 goals in 16 games with 4 assists in all competitions ;). I'm fighting for my life now in my game, struggling in 3rd like 12/13 points behind Chelsea. Through to the knock outs of the Champions League but need to get far in them. I'm certainly playing that formation with the sweeper and the lone striker. I think that is when it works better otherwise it gets too crowded up top.

In 2nd place behind Chelski who are 16 points ahead with 17 games remaining. Think they could be on course for a record haul, 21 games in and they still haven't and last time I checked they had only recorded 2 draws. I don't have much chance of catching them this season unless I hit a massive dip in form. Looks like it's the FA Cup and the Champions League for me this season then.
