Football Transfers Thread

The papers are saying that Utd have opened talks over a ?12m move for Everton's Leighton Baines.

Don't understand it myself. I really don't see how we need a left back at the moment, nor do I see why Baines would want to join to become a back up behind Evra.

With Fabio going out on loan next season, we'll at least need some cover in that position.

Plus, Evra could do with a kick up the backside, his performance levels have been deteriorating over the past few seasons, some of his defensive work this season has been extremely underwhelming.

Not surprising since not only has he had a free ride with little competition in that position but he's also hardly been rested over the past few seasons.

And... if he didn't hit the post from three yards out against Everton, we would've won the title. :D

You could even argue that Baines is a better player. He's basically been our biggest creative force for each of the last 3 seasons. Whilst being solid defensively.

Of course that could just be because he is used so extensively (and way above the norm) for a left back so he may appear better than he is. In a better team he'd he wouldn't get as much of the ball in the final third.

Everton are going to let Baines move for only 12M pounds? Interesting.

Actually would be a good move, but there's Fabio already.

I'm not saying Chelsea are stupid but do they realise you can sell players you don't want any more rather than just releasing them? Especially when you paid nearly ?30m for them.

i can't see 12 million being the figure. Despite being screwed financially we have held out for an extortionate fee for lescott, got arsenal to pay more for arteta than you'd expect arsenal to pay. We even got more for Bily than you'd expect considering how bad he was for us. With the exception of Yakubu we get the good side of any fee we receive or we don't sell.

Can't see Baines going for less than 16million.

As I said earlier he's one of our biggest creative forces. We need to bring in some good attacking wingers, if we have to replace baines we won't be getting a similar player to him (there simply aren't that many left backs that attack as well as baines. those that do we can't afford) and certainly whoever we get will be a step down form baines in terms of quality.

Coupled with the fact we need to sign some creative players I can't see us letting what little creative width we have go. It would be too difficult to fix.

Yeah but ?12 million for a back up? It's too much. Like I said I don't see why Baines would want to come tI sit on his arse.

That was in response to Auwais, didn't realise there was Another page after that one.

I was really disappointed with Evra in the 1st half of the season but towards the end he was very good. Still not enough after a few seasons of sub-par performances but he's getting there. Baines just seems unnecessary when the obvious problem that needs fixing first is the midfield.

It's not about Baines, it's about getting some cover in that position.

In an ideal world, I'd like to get someone proven in like Baines, in a similar manner to what Madrid did last summer, spunking ?26m on Coentr?o despite already having Marcelo.

In reality, we should be looking for a young, cheap solution like Evra was in the first place when we bought him from Monaco.

I've always said I'd love Baines at Spurs. Benny is solid, but he can't actually cross, and his entire game is based around chipping it down the line to Bale. To have the option of Baines and/or Bale down the left would have been very difficult to defend against.

Ship has probably sailed now though.

Sounds like City are tracking Martinez as well as us. So that's probably another one in Sky Blue next season.
