PC Champion of Champions​

The PC Champion of Champions is a List-A tournament which shall be played to celebrate the completion of fifteen seasons of the PC Champions League. As the name of the tournament suggests, it will feature the champions of every completed season of the Champions League since it's inception in 2010. It is set to be the ultimate prizefight between 12 different CL-winning teams, with the winner being crowned as the true Champion of Champions.

The 12 competing teams will be divided into two groups of six each, with the two best performing teams from each group moving on to the semi-final stage. The list of participants include the Basnahira Bears (CL VIII & IX champions), Bengaluru Bulls (CL V champions), Centurion Lions (CL XI champions), Durban Bulldogs (CL IV champions), Hobart Tigers (CL XV champions), Jamaica Bandits (CL XIII champions), Liverpool Lightning (CL VI champions), Manchester Cricket Club (CL III champions), Manicaland Bulls (CL X champions), Sydney Stallions (CL VII champions), Toronto Hurricanes (CL XIV champions) and West Coast Fever (CL XII champions).

The United Arab Emirates, a completely neutral venue for all the participating teams will play hosts to the tournament. The country hosted an ICC tournament as recently as 2014 - the 2014 U-19 Cricket World Cup, which was won by South Africa.​

- Positions are decided by most points. Where two or more teams are tied on points, the following methods will be taken into account to decide which team goes through :-
1) Higher net run rate.
2) Winners of head-to-head matches.
3) Higher number of wickets per ball.

- If the semi-final is tied, the following methods will be taken into account to decide the winner :-
1) Lesser number of wickets down.
2) Winners of head-to-head matches.
3) Better finish the the group stage.
4) Higher run rate in the first 20 overs of an innings.

- If the final is tied, the two finalists will be declared joint winners of the tournament.​

Lineup rules

Each team must field a minimum of 7 locals (), and is allowed no more than 4 overseas () players per lineup. Other than that, a lineup must contain one proper wicket-keeper (//) and at least 6 marked bowlers.


Player Clash rules

The PC Champion of Champions features players who have been contracted to play for more than one franchise. The Player Clash rules are used to avoid them from clashing when their franchises have a fixture with each other.
​

1) Players contracted as locals by a particular team will be declared available for selection to their home team, and subsequently declared unavailable for selection to their overseas team in case of a player clash.
2) Players contracted as overseas professionals by two teams having a fixture together will be declared available randomly for either one of the two teams involved. If there is only one such player clashing, he will be declared unavailable for the match.
3) Players contracted as locals by two teams having a fixture together will be declared available randomly for either one of the two teams involved. If there is only one such player clashing, he will be declared unavailable for the match.
3) In a match involving more than two player clashes, where both teams happen to be foreign to the players clashing, one or more players will be declared unavailable at random for the match in question.​

Summary​

The PC Champion of Champions was a List-A tournament played in the United Arab Emirates to celebrate the completion of fifteen seasons of the coveted PC Champions League. As the name of the tournament suggested, it featured the champions of every completed season of the Champions League since it's inception in 2010 by the late Mihir Doshi. It turned out to be the ultimate prizefight between 12 different Champions League-winning teams, with the winner eventually being crowned as the true champion of champions.

The 12 competing teams were divided into two groups of six for the group stages, with the top two from each group qualifying for the semi-finals. The Basnahira Bears (CL VIII & IX champions), Centurion Lions (CL XI champions), Jamaica Bandits (CL XIII champions), Manchester CC (CL III champions), Sydney Stallions (CL VII champions) and Toronto Hurricanes (CL XIV champions) formed Group A, while Group B consisted of the Bengaluru Bulls (CL V champions), Durban Bulldogs (CL IV champions), Hobart Tigers (CL XV champions), Liverpool Lightning (CL VI champions), Manicaland Bulls (CL X champions) and West Coast Fever (CL XII champions). The group stage matches were evenly distributed across four different venues, namely the ICC Academy Ground and Dubai International Stadium in Dubai, the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, and the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah - one of the most iconic venues for one-day matches played in Asia.

Group A was thoroughly dominated by 2-time CL winners Basnahira Bears, who won all 5 of their matches to finish at the very top of their group. Joining them in the semi-finals were Manchester CC, who managed to edge out the Jamaica Bandits on net run rate after finishing with the same number of wins i.e 3 from their 5 matches. The latter lost quite unexpectedly to the unfancied Canadian franchise Toronto Hurricanes in their final group match by a narrow 14-run margin to botch up their chances of qualifying for the semi-finals. The Centurion Lions showed occasional spark but failed to live up to their potential. Despite having a squad boasting of big names such as Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, Virat Kohli, Mitchell Johnson and Lasith Malinga among others, they could win only 2 out of 5 group matches. They were consequently knocked out of contention for a semi-final berth alongside the Jamaica Bandits, Toronto Hurricanes (1 win out of 5 matches) and Sydney Stallions (1 win out of 5 matches).

Group B on the other hand was similarly dominated by West Coast Fever and in patches by the Durban Bulldogs. The former finished with 5 wins out of 5 group matches, while the latter finished with 3 wins out of 5 group matches. However, both teams managed to win heavy enough to maintain a net run rate of above +1.000. Durban finished with a net run rate of +1.312 to West Coast Fever's +1.173 as a result of two victories by huge margins by 9 wickets and 135 runs over Bengaluru Bulls and Hobart Tigers respectively, thus gaining them an easy passage over the Manicaland Bulls (3 wins out of 5 matches) by virtue of net run rate. The teams knocked out of contention for a semi-final berth from Group B alongside the Manicaland Bulls were Liverpool Lightning (2 wins out of 5 matches), Hobart Tigers (2 wins out of 5 matches) and Bengaluru Bulls (zero wins). The Bengaluru Bulls were the only team to finish winless in the group stages in the entire competition.

The Basnahira Bears faced off against the Durban Bulldogs in the first semi-final. After losing the toss and being sent in to bat, Durban posted a competitive 264/6 from their 50 overs with Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar scoring his second century of the tournament. Basnahira succumbed under the pressure of chasing in a semi-final and folded for 201, as Graeme Swann picked 4 for 44 and Dale Steyn 3 for 36 to bowl Durban to the final with a convincing 63-run victory. Their dreams of being crowned the Champion of Champions to go with their 2 Champions League victories were dashed. West Coast Fever joined the Durban Bulldogs for the final by beating Manchester CC in the second semi-final by a margin of 88 runs. Alastair Cook and captain Ricky Ponting scored half-centuries to help West Coast to a total of 269/9 from their 50 overs. Later, Daniel Vettori and Nathan Hauritz took advantage of a deteriorating pitch and routed Manchester for 181 with three wickets apiece.

Prior to the final, the eliminated teams faced each other in a consolatory round to determine the overall standings of the tournament. Basnahira Bears beat Manchester by 7 wickets to finish at 3rd place, Jamaica Bandits finished 5th place by beating the Manicaland Bulls also by 7 wickets, Liverpool Lightning beat Centurion Lions by 17 runs to finish 7th, Hobart Tigers beat fellow Australian franchise Sydney Stallions by 24 runs to finish 9th and Bengaluru Bulls managed to avoid the wooden spoon by emerging victorious in their clash against Toronto Hurricanes for 11th place by a 129 runs.

The final which was played at the Dubai International Stadium was expected to be a thrilling game with some of the biggest names in cricket playing. The West Coast Fever lineup included the likes of Alastair Cook, Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis, Shane Watson, Michael Hussey, Daniel Vettori, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee and Doug Bollinger. Meanwhile, the Durban Bulldogs were not too far apart in terms of quality despite missing two of their key performers in Shane Watson (playing for his local WCF) and Sachin Tendulkar (declared himself unavailable to avoid conflict of interest). Their lineup consisted of Brendon McCullum, Alviro Petersen, Hashim Amla, Ross Taylor, Dale Benkenstein, Zander de Bruyn, Heino Kuhn, Vernon Philander, Morne Morkel, Dale Steyn and Graeme Swann. It turned out to be a very anti-climactic affair with West Coast registering a crushing 150-run victory over their opponents. The Durban skipper Hashim Amla was left to rue his decision to send West Coast in to bat after winning the toss, as Adam Gilchrist defied age and expectations to score 164 off just 134 balls - his innings containing a record 13 sixes. Kumar Sangakkara, with an unbeaten 60 off 39 balls, and Jacques Kallis with 49 off 26 balls added to Durban's misery by taking their team's total to a gargantuan 363/3 off 50 overs. In response, Durban could only muster 213 from 43.5 overs. West Coast's left-arm quicks Mitchell Johnson and Doug Bollinger picked three wickets apiece in their team's comprehensive victory.

West Coast Fever gained the honorary title of Champion of Champions as a result of their victory in their final. Often touted as the strongest team ever drafted in a premier league in the history of the PC cricket leagues section, they lived up to the expectations to win a tournament featuring only Champions League victors. Kumar Sangakkara, who batted like a run machine for all his franchises by totalling an awe-inspiring 1076 runs at an average of 82.77, and proved his worth as a wicket-keeper batsman with 27 dismissals from 15 innings, duly won the Player of the Tournament. No player was more deserving of the honor.​

Olympics timeline (1896-1928)​

1894

- The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is created by Pierre de Coubertin, on 23 June 1894 with Demetrios Vikelas as its first president. Athens is unanimously chosen to stage the inaugural modern Olympic Games in 1896, because of Greece being the birthplace of the Ancient Olympic Games.

- Cricket is among a large roster of sports suggested for the program in Athens at the 1894 Sorbonne congress. Others include Athletics, Cycling (Road & Track), Fencing, Football, Gymnastics, Rowing, Sailing, Shooting, Swimming, Tennis, Weightlifting, Wrestling and Yachting.

1895

- Plans for a cricket tournament almost fall through alongside football due to lack of entrants, but for last minute entries by Australia, Canada and somewhat unexpectedly, the United States. Cricket is confirmed as one of 10 sports encompassing 12 disciplines and 44 events.

1896

- The 1896 Summer Olympics, christened as the Games of the I Olympiad, are officially opened by King George I of Greece in Athens, on the anniversary Greece's independence. The opening ceremony is held in the renovated Panathinaiko Stadium with 80,000 in attendance.

- A 4-team cricket tournament with Australia, Canada, Great Britain and the United States gets underway at the Panathinaiko Stadium. The four teams are to play each other once, and the two highest on points qualifying for the final. Each team gets 2 points added for a win, 1 point reduced for a loss, and 1 point each for a no result or tie. If two or more teams are tied on points, the winners of head-to-head matches and margins of victory will be used to decide the two finalists.​

Group A was thoroughly dominated by 2-time CL winners Basnahira Bears, who won all 5 of their matches to finish at the very top of their group. Joining them in the semi-finals were Manchester CC, who managed to edge out the Jamaica Bandits on net run rate after finishing with the same number of wins i.e 3 from their 5 matches. The latter lost quite unexpectedly to the unfancied Canadian franchise Toronto Hurricanes in their final group match by a narrow 14-run margin to botch up their chances of qualifying for the semi-finals. The Centurion Lions showed occasional spark but failed to live up to their potential. Despite having a squad boasting of big names such as Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, Virat Kohli, Mitchell Johnson and Lasith Malinga among others, they could win only 2 out of 5 group matches. They were consequently knocked out of contention for a semi-final berth alongside the Jamaica Bandits, Toronto Hurricanes (1 win out of 5 matches) and Sydney Stallions (1 win out of 5 matches).

Group B on the other hand was similarly dominated by West Coast Fever and in patches by the Durban Bulldogs. The former finished with 5 wins out of 5 group matches, while the latter finished with 3 wins out of 5 group matches. However, both teams managed to win heavy enough to maintain a net run rate of above +1.000. Durban finished with a net run rate of +1.312 to West Coast Fever's +1.173 as a result of two victories by huge margins by 9 wickets and 135 run over Bengaluru Bulls and Hobart Tigers respectively, thus gaining them an easy passage over the Manicaland Bulls (3 wins out of 5 matches) by virtue of net run rate. The teams knocked out of contention for a semi-final berth from Group B alongside the Manicaland Bulls were Liverpool Lightning (2 wins out of 5 matches), Hobart Tigers (2 wins out of 5 matches) and Bengaluru Bulls (zero wins). The Bengaluru Bulls were the only team to finish winless in the group stages in the entire competition.

The Basnahira Bears faced off against the Durban Bulldogs in the first semi-final. After losing the toss and being sent in to bat, Durban posted a competitive 264/6 from their 50 overs with Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar scoring his second century of the tournament. Basnahira succumbed under the pressure of chasing in a semi-final and folded for 201, as Graeme Swann picked 4 for 44 and Dale Steyn 3 for 36 to bowl Durban to the final with a convincing 63-run victory. Their dreams of being crowned the Champion of Champions to go with their 2 Champions League victories were dashed. West Coast Fever joined the Durban Bulldogs for the final by beating Manchester CC in the second semi-final by a margin of 88 runs. Alastair Cook and captain Ricky Ponting scored half-centuries to help West Coast to a total of 269/9 from their 50 overs. Later, Daniel Vettori and Nathan Hauritz took advantage of a deteriorating pitch and routed Manchester for 181 with three wickets apiece.

Prior to the final, the eliminated teams faced each other in a consolatory round to determine the overall standings of the tournament. Basnahira Bears beat Manchester by 7 wickets to finish at 3rd place, Jamaica Bandits finished 5th place by beating the Manicaland Bulls also by 7 wickets, Liverpool Lightning beat Centurion Lions by 17 runs to finish 7th, Hobart Tigers beat fellow Australian franchise Sydney Stallions to finish 9th and Bengaluru Bulls only just managed to avoid the wooden spoon by emerging victorious in their clash against Toronto Hurricanes for 11th place.

The final which was played at the Dubai International Stadium was expected to be a thrilling game with some of the biggest names in cricket playing. The West Coast Fever lineup included the likes of Alastair Cook, Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis, Shane Watson, Michael Hussey, Daniel Vettori, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee and Doug Bollinger. Meanwhile, the Durban Bulldogs were not too far apart in terms of quality despite missing two of their key performers in Shane Watson (playing for his local WCF) and Sachin Tendulkar (declared himself unavailable to avoid conflict of interest). Their lineup consisted of Brendon McCullum, Alviro Petersen, Hashim Amla, Ross Taylor, Dale Benkenstein, Zander de Bruyn, Heino Kuhn, Vernon Philander, Morne Morkel, Dale Steyn and Graeme Swann. It turned out to be a very anti-climactic affair with West Coast registering a crushing 150-run victory over their opponents. The Durban skipper Hashim Amla was left to rue his decision to send West Coast in to bat after winning the toss, as Adam Gilchrist defied age and expectations to score 164 off just 134 balls - his innings containing a record 13 sixes. Kumar Sangakkara, with an unbeaten 60 off 39 balls, and Jacques Kallis with 49 off 26 balls added to Durban's misery by taking their team's total to a gargantuan 363/3 off 50 overs. In response, Durban could only muster 213 from 43.5 overs. West Coast's left-arm quicks Mitchell Johnson and Doug Bollinger picked three wickets apiece in their team's comprehensive victory.

West Coast Fever gained the honorary title of Champion of Champions as a result of their victory in their final. Often touted as the strongest team ever drafted in a premier league in the history of the PC cricket leagues section, they lived up to the expectations to win a tournament featuring only Champions League victors. Kumar Sangakkara, who batted like a run machine for all his franchises by totalling an awe-inspiring 1076 runs at an average of 82.77, and proved his worth as a wicket-keeper batsman with 27 dismissals from 15 innings, duly won the Player of the Tournament. No player was more deserving of the honor.​

Over a 16-year period starting from 1896 to 1912, the United States of America were among the strongest cricketing nations in the Olympics. They were good enough to win medals for the sport of cricket in every edition of the Olympic Games played during this period, starting with a Gold medal in 1896, a Bronze medal in 1900, another Bronze medal in 1904 on home turf at St Louis, a Silver medal in 1908, and another Silver medal in 1912. The biggest reason behind their success was an all-rounder from Philadelphia by the name of John Barton King. Often considered to be the greatest player to never play Test cricket, Bart King went on to become the greatest all-round cricketer in the history of Olympic cricket over the course of a 24-year career spanning from 1896 to 1920.

King made his Olympic debut as a 22-year old in the 1896 Games at Athens, where the United States were among the only four nations participating in cricket alongside Canada, Great Britain and Australia. He was handed the new ball by captain John Lester in their first match against Australia, which was also the first cricket match ever to be played in the Olympic Games. The Americans won the toss and sent their opponents in to bat on an under-prepared pitch at the Panathinaiko Stadium. It took him only 3 deliveries to pick up his first wicket, that of Alec Bannerman for nought. He picked up two more wickets in the innings to finish with figures of 3 for 22 from 8 overs, as Australia were bowled out for 165. During the United States' innings, King walked in to bat at No 6 following a failure from the top-order, and scored 20 off 34 balls in a partnership of 45 with William Noble, before being bowled by Charlie Turner. The United States won the match by 2 wickets, thus bringing up their first Olympic victory in the process. King did not make much of an impact over the next couple of matches, returning figures of 0 for 44 off 10 overs and scoring 1 in a heavy 110-run defeat to a dominant Great Britain lineup captained by WG Grace, and picking 2 for 29 off 10 overs in an 8-wicket victory over the United States' arch-rivals Canada. Following an intense 4-team round robin competition, the United States were tied on points with Great Britain and Australia, all of whom had managed two victories as opposed to one defeat. They qualified for the final alongside Great Britain at the expense of Australia, who finished as Bronze medalists.

It was in the 1896 final that he truly cemented his reputation as a world class all-rounder. The Americans batted first upon winning the toss, and quite unlike their previous encounter against the same opponents in the round robin, attacked the opposition's bowlers from the word go. Their approach caught the British by surprise, and after the brilliant start provided by George Patterson, the American skipper John Lester wore down Great Britain's bowlers by playing some good defensive cricket along with Walter Clark. The ploy of keeping a good number of wickets intact in order to give the lower-order freedom to play their shots worked. King walked out to bat following Noble's dismissal with the United States in a brilliant position at 157/4, and was given the perfect opportunity to test out his ball striking skills acquired through baseball. Having Lester for company, he put on quite a show with the bat by scoring 49 off only 30 balls and clubbing three massive sixes off Great Britain's most dangerous bowlers in George Lohmann, Bill Lockwood and Tom Richardson. The rate at which he scored those runs was quite unheard of at the time, thus gaining him much praise from everyone including skipper John Lester, who had himself played an inspirational innings of 74 off 131 balls against the world's strongest bowling lineup in the match. The Americans finished with a considerable total of 235, the second highest of the entire competition. It proved just about enough, as Great Britain fell short of their target by only 15 runs in the end. King took 1 for 45 from his 10 overs and the crucial catch to dismiss the superbly in-form WG Grace for 65 off the bowling of Henry Baily. The United States sent ripples across the cricketing world by quite sensationally defeating the world's most powerful Test side and winning a Gold medal for cricket. King's first Olympic tournament yielded 70 runs at an average of 35.00 coming off an awe-inspiring strike rate of 104 runs per hundred balls, and 6 wickets at an average of 23.33 from 4 matches. He did not top either the batting or bowling charts for his country, but his importance to their lineup went far beyond mere statistics.

The United States did not quite live up to the reputation they had gained themselves in the 1900 Olympic Games which were hosted by Paris, though they eventually won a Bronze medal by beating arch-rivals Canada in a hastily organized Bronze playoff. Apart from Canada, their only wins came against newcomers Argentina and New Zealand. They lost to Australia by 33 runs in the group stages and later to Great Britain in the semi-final by 6 wickets. King endured his leanest Olympic campaign to date, with only 39 runs at an average of 13, and 3 wickets at an average of 40.67 from 4 matches. His best performance of the competition came in the Bronze playoff against Canada, where he picked 3 for 19 off 6 overs in a 30 overs per side match. However, this hastily arranged fixture to decide a Bronze medalist was not given official status by the IOC, and therefore did not affect any of the players' stats. For the first and only time in his Olympic career, King was not selected in the Olympic lineup of the tournament used to celebrate the best performing players at the end of every Olympics.

In 1904, the Olympic Games were played on the United States' home turf in the city of St Louis. King put a disappointing 1900 campaign behind him to come back stronger than ever as a bowler, finishing the tournament with 13 wickets at a very miserly average of 11.69 from 5 matches. Among his noteworthy performances with the ball were a haul of 3 for 21 against South Africa, which helped the United States overcome a Test-playing nation for the first time since their 1896 triumph; He had also reinvented himself as a top-order batsman, scoring 101 runs at an average of 20.20 and bringing up a maiden half-century in the Olympics against Great Britain in the semi-final. His runs however, came at a strike rate of 58.72, nearly half of his formerly Gilbert Jessop-esque strike rate of 104.47 in 1896. The United States failed to progress any further than the semi-final despite his efforts. They eventually won another Bronze medal by overcoming the West Indies in the Bronze playoff where King scored 11 and went wicketless for the only time in the competition.​

Playing a total of 22 matches for the United States over the course of his long career, he aggregated 543 runs at an average of 30.17 with 4 half-centuries, and took 41 wickets at an average of 15.68, which included 2 five-wicket hauls. His highest score with the bat was 95 against Great Britain in the final of the 1912 Olympics, while his best bowling analysis of 8 for 11 came earlier in the same tournament against the Netherlands. He also captained the United States in 8 matches between 1908 and 1912, winning 5 and leading them to two Silver medals for cricket.

Making his Olympic debut as a 22-year old in the 1896 Olympic Games held in Athens, King scored 70 runs at 35.00 and took 6 wickets at 23.33 from 4 matches. He played a key role in the United States' 2-wicket victory over Australia in the opening match of the competition, taking 3 for 22 from 8 overs and scoring 20. His greatest contribution came in the tournament final against a powerful Great Britain lineup led by WG Grace, where he scored 49 off just 30 balls and later took 1 for 45 from 10 overs as the Americans sent ripples across the cricketing world by beating the world's greatest Test side to win a Gold medal for cricket.

Four years later in the 1900 Olympic Games where the United States won a Bronze medal for cricket, King endured his leanest Olympic tournament to date, scoring only 39 runs at an average of 13.00 and taking 3 wickets at 40.67 from 4 matches. His stats could have been made to look better as he had returned figures of 3 for 19 from 6 overs in a hastily arranged Bronze playoff against Canada which was won by the Americans, but the match was not given official status by the IOC. It would be the only time his average dipped below 20 with the bat and rose above 25 with the ball in an Olympic tournament. He returned stronger than ever in the 1904 Olympic Games played on the United States' home turf at St Louis, taking 13 wickets at a miserly average of 11.69, recording a then career best 6 for 21 against the Mixed Team and scoring 101 runs at an average of 20.20 after having re-invented himself as an obdurate top-order batsman. He also scored a maiden half-century with 57 against Great Britain in the tournament semi-final, but in vain as the United States lost the match by 6 wickets. They finished with another Bronze medal by beating the West Indies in the Bronze playoff, following which long-time captain John Lester handed over the reins of the United States team to King.

It was in his mid-thirties and after being made United States captain that King truly reached the peak of his powers as a player. In 8 matches during this period, he scored 296 runs at an average of 42.29 with the bat, and took 19 wickets at 11.21 with the ball. He led the United States to two Olympic finals in 1908 and 1912, both coming against Great Britain, where they only narrowly missed out on Gold medals due to a stubborn last-wicket pair and thrilling last ball six from Phil Mead. King gave it his all in both finals, scoring 61 off 53 balls with 6 sixes and taking 2 for 28 from 8 overs in 1908, and 95 off 108 balls with 5 sixes and figures of 1 for 23 from 10 overs in 1912. During the 1908 Olympics, he went past Bill Lockwood's record of 23 wickets to emerge as the leading wicket-taker in the Olympics, eventually finishing with 30 at the end of the season. At the age of 39 in 1912, he had seemingly hung up his boots after a stellar tournament during which he scored 127 runs at 42.33 and took 11 wickets at an unbelievable average of 6.45 from 3 matches. In doing so, he became only the third player after Clem Hill and Victor Trumper to cross the 500-run mark in Olympic cricket and the first to take more than 40 wickets in a career.

But it wasn't to be the last of him in the Olympics. Eight years later in 1920, following the end of the Great War and upon the resumption of the Olympic Games, King was tempted out of retirement at the age of 46 by the US Olympic Committee in a bid to add some much needed experience to a squad depleted by retirements of prominent players and casualties in the war. In what was the United States' only match against Canada, he acquitted himself well with 37 off 50 balls, but looked a shadow of his former self with the ball as he could send down only 5 wicketless overs for the cost of 16 runs after being brought on as third change. His knock helped push his Olympic career average above 30 and made him the batsman to hit the most number of sixes i.e 16 in the Olympics. The United States went on to lose to Canada for the very first time in the Olympics and endured their first ever medal-less campaign for cricket. He retired again, this time for good.​

Spoiler: Introduction

The 1904 Olympic Games in St Louis were overshadowed by the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, much like the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris during the time of the Exposition Universelle. Both Games stretched over long periods and were far from the standards set by the original 1896 Olympic Games in Athens. The Olympic Movement is currently not in good shape and desperately needs to recapture the spirit of 1896. It needs to do so quickly, as to all those who did not participate in St. Louis, Rome 1908 will mean an 8-year gap. As a compromise, the first Intercalated Games have been scheduled to start in 1906 by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as part of a new schedule, where every four years, in between the internationally organized games, there will be intermediate games held in Athens. The IOC as a whole have given the Greek NOC full support for the organisation of the event.

Ten different nations have offered their support for cricket to be included as an event at the venue where it proved so successful ten years previously in 1896, when the United States stunned the world to win a Gold medal ahead of their Test-playing peers from Australia and Great Britain. The teams participating (in alphabetical order) are Australia, Belgium, Canada, Egypt, France, Great Britain, Netherlands, South Africa, United States and the West Indies. The Panathinaiko Stadium will once again play host to cricket matches, and the ten participating teams will be evenly distributed across two groups of five each for the tournament which is set to be in the round-robin format.

Cricket at the Olympics - Amsterdam 1928​

The 1928 Olympic Games, now known as the Summer Olympics since a separate Winter Olympics was introduced in 1924, are set to be hosted in Amsterdam, Netherlands. With as many as 20 teams entering for the sport of cricket, it is set to be the biggest international cricket tournament till date. The teams participating (in alphabetical order) are:

Ceylon,

Chile,

Egypt,

Great Britain,

India,

Ireland,

Netherlands,

New Zealand,

Rhodesia,

South Africa,

United States,

Uruguay and the

West Indies.

Making their Olympic debuts this year are China, who missed out in both 1920 and 1924 due to various reasons. Uruguay, who have gone on to dominate the sport of football like no other, will also try their hand at cricket for the very first time. Meanwhile, Burma and Egypt will be making their comebacks to the sport after a 16-year hiatus. This will also be the first Olympic Games since 1908, in which the host nation participates in cricket. The Netherlands are one of the most prominent cricket teams to not have the so-called "Test status" and have a deep history with the game. They will be looking to make the most of a rare opportunity of playing in an Olympics at home.

The Amsterdam Olympisch Stadion and Harry Elte Stadium will play host to the cricket matches set to take place in the tournament. The usual cup tie or knockout format will be used again, though this time the Games will include a preliminary round featuring eight teams vying for four available spots in the first round of sixteen.​

Summary​

The 1928 Olympic Games, officially known as the Games of the IX Olympiad, were held in Amsterdam, the capital city of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. These were the eighth edition of the Olympic Games and the first to be known as the Summer Olympics, since a separate Winter Olympics was introduced in 1924. Other innovations included the lighting of the Olympic Flame for the very first time, the parade of nations starting with Greece (which holds the origins of the Olympics) and ending with the host country, and use of Coca-Cola as a tournament sponsor also for the very first time.

The sport of cricket enjoyed it's most popular Olympics till date, with a record 20 nations participating in the cricket tournament at the 1928 Games. Among the participants were the Republic of China and Uruguay, two nations mostly associated with martial arts and football respectively, who tried their hand at high level cricket for the first time. This was China's official debut at the Olympic Games after a near miss in 1924 when they participated in the opening ceremony, but their only four athletes (all tennis players) withdrew from competition shortly afterwards. Burma and Egypt also ended their 16-year hiatus from the sport by participating for the first time since 1912. The full list of participating nations (in alphabetical order) included Argentina, Australia, Bermuda, Brazil, Burma, Canada, Ceylon, Chile, China, Egypt, Great Britain, India, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Rhodesia, South Africa, United States, Uruguay and the West Indies. Netherlands became the first host nation to participate in cricket since Great Britain in the 1908 Olympics in London.

The knockout format that was introduced in 1912, continued to be used for cricket and proved beneficial given the short span of 1928 Olympics which lasted a little over 16 days, making it the shortest Olympics in terms of days since the the 1896 Olympics in Athens that lasted a total of 9 days. However, for the first time, the tournament included a preliminary round featuring eight teams, namely Bermuda, Brazil, Burma, Chile, China, Egypt, Rhodesia and Uruguay, vying for four available spots in the round of sixteen into which Australia, Argentina, Great Britain, India, Ireland, Netherlands, South Africa, United States and the West Indies had already gained direct entry. A total of 20 matches were played throughout the tournament across two different venues in the Amsterdam Olympisch Stadion, and the Harry Elte Stadion (also known as the Old Stadion), which would go on to be demolished only a year later.

China, Egypt, Rhodesia and Uruguay gained qualification to the round of sixteen with victories over Bermuda, Chile, Burma and Brazil respectively. Ellis Achong, a Trinidadian cricketer of Chinese descent with a rather unusual bowling method (he bowled wrist spin with his left arm) made his debut for China during the preliminary round. He bowled a match-winning spell of 4 for 25 from his 10 overs, as Bermuda's batsmen appeared clueless against this new type of bowling which would later be termed as slow left-arm chinaman owing to his Chinese heritage. Among the other surprises thrown up were the performance of the Uruguay national team in their cricketing debut against South American neighbors Brazil. Carlos Cat and HL Pennock picked 4 wickets apiece to in their side's 3-wicket victory, which helped them progress to the next round to face Great Britain in the round of sixteen.

The round of sixteen had it's equal share of thrillers and mismatches between Test-playing and amateur nations. Australia beat Rhodesia by a ginormous 222-run margin as captain Jack Ryder smashed the then fastest century (it would later be overtaken by Jack Gregory in the same tournament) in Olympic cricket off just 72 balls. Argentina beat the once mighty United States by 8 runs in a thrilling match, as the latter exited without a medal for the third Olympic Games on the trot since 1920. South Africa defeated newcomers China by 175 runs in another mismatch, as John Nicolson's 65 proved more than the entire Chinese side put together. Meanwhile, Canada were found wanting against an Ireland lineup containing several players with good first-class experience, and lost by 40 runs in a low scoring contest. West Indies, the Silver medalists of 1924, crushed Egypt by 8 wickets in a match that turned out to be George Headley's Olympic debut. The hosts Netherlands and Ceylon took part in another thrilling low-scorer in the round with the former emerging victorious by 17 runs, while Great Britain crushed Uruguay by 10 wickets in another no-contest between Test-playing and amateur nations. The last match of the round saw India overcome New Zealand by a thrilling 2-run margin. And so, the teams making it to the quarter-finals were Australia, Argentina, Great Britain, India, Ireland, Netherlands, South Africa and the West Indies.

Australia posted a record 304/2 against Argentina in the first quarter-final, as 19-year old Archie Jackson scored 109 off 122 balls. Argentina could only manage 162/7 from their 50 overs, and lost by 142 runs. The second quarter-final saw the first real upset in a match between a Test-playing and amateur nation in the 1928 tournament, as Ireland overcame South Africa by 5 wickets despite a brilliant unbeaten century from Herbie Taylor, who became the first batsman to record more than one century in an Olympic career. The fast bowling duo of Learie Constantine and George Francis picked 4 wickets apiece in the third quarter-final to help West Indies set the record straight with an 8-wicket victory against hosts Netherlands, who had beaten them in both their previous encounters in 1904 and 1912. India almost did the unthinkable by nearly upsetting their colonial masters Great Britain in the fourth quarter-final, but for a superb all-round display by Wally Hammond, who picked 5 for 24 from 10 overs while bowling and scored a crucial 51 off 63 balls with the bat. Australia, Great Britain, Ireland and the West Indies made it to the semi-finals as a result of their victories.

Australia continued their irresistible 1928 form by posting their third consecutive total in excess of 300 on the trot in the first semi-final against Ireland. The hard hitting Jack Gregory went on to score the fastest century in Olympic history off just 70 balls, beating his captain Jack Ryder's 72-ball effort against Rhodesia earlier in the tournament. He then turned up the heat with some intimidatory fast bowling, which fetched him 3 wickets and saw Ireland reduced to 97/7 by the 30th over. They then batted out their remaining overs to post 188/8, as Jacko Heaslip stonewalled his way to 42 off 100 balls. Australia won by 114 runs, their third consecutive victory by a margin of 100 runs or more in the competition, and made it to the final. Herbert Sutcliffe and Ernest Tyldesley found form at the right moment during the second semi-final to help Great Britain register a 5-wicket victory over the West Indies, Test cricket's newest addition as of 1928. George Headley's maiden half-century in the Olympics in the form of a 123-ball 63 went in vain, alongside Learie Constantine's much faster 52 off 63 balls. This left Ireland and the West Indies to battle it out for a Bronze medal, while Australia and Great Britain battled it out for a Gold medal in the cricket final of the 1928 Olympic Games.

The Irish couldn't have picked a better match to avenge their heartbreaking losses to the West Indies in 1904 and 1924. The West Indian bowling lineup featuring Learie Constantine, George Francis, Herman Griffith and Snuffy Browne among others kept Ireland's batsmen in check for most part, reducing them to 165/8. But they went on to concede 52 runs in just 4.4 overs for the 9th wicket, with plucky Irish wicket-keeper Augustine Kelly smashing 45 off just 21 balls from No 10. Still, the match was West Indies' to lose when their opening pair of George Challenor and Clifford Roach put on 120 runs for the 1st wicket. That was exactly what happened, as James MacDonald picked 4 for 31 and Thomas Dixon 3 for 54, to bowl Ireland to a stunning 2-run victory. They won their first medal for cricket in the form of a Bronze medal. West Indies, the Silver medalists of 1924 were consigned to a lowly 4th place.

In the final, Australia won the toss and elected to bat first, posting a big total of 279/5 from their 50 overs. Bill Ponsford and Don Bradman joined together at the fall of Archie Jackson's wicket with the score at 38, and went on to add another 205 runs off 36.1 overs for the 2nd wicket. Ponsford was eventually dismissed for 99, but Bradman scored his century and went on to overtake the legendary Clem Hill's 128* in 1904, which up to that point was the highest score by an Australian batsman in the Olympics. In response, Great Britain started off their run chase with Jack Hobbs and Herbert Sutcliffe putting on 109 off 22.5 overs for the 1st wicket. They had a realistic chance of overhauling Australia's total for a while, but the inability of Sutcliffe and Tyldesley to up the ante eventually cost them as they ran out of overs to score the required number of runs from. Sutcliffe brought up his maiden Olympic century in the penultimate over of the match, by which time they needed an impossible 61 off the final over. He was dismissed off the final ball of the match by Bradman, who bowled just one over in the match to claim 1 for 1. Australia won by 59 runs to claim a hat-trick of Gold medals dating back to 1920, beating their previous best Gold-winning streak of two in 1900 and 1904. Great Britain finished with yet another Silver medal, their fifth overall and second since 1920. Bill Ponsford finished the tournament as it's leading run scorer with 247 runs at 61.75 and was declared Player of the Tournament. Jack Hobbs, the highest run scorer in the history of the Olympics, retired at the end of the tournament with 804 runs at an average of 57.43 from 19 matches over a 20-year career between 1908 and 1928.​

Of all the batsmen to have played during the period between 1890 to 1914, otherwise known as the Golden Age of Cricket, Australia's Victor Trumper was by general consent the best and most brilliant. He was among the most versatile batsmen in the history of Test cricket, capable of excelling on any kind of wicket, against any kind of opposition, from any given batting position; he once scored 293 batting at No 9 in a first-class match. The true genius of his batting was evident not by the number of runs he scored or his career average, but by his performances on wickets regarded as unplayable by other batsmen, where he would often stand head and shoulders above his contemporaries. Many such wickets were found in the early Olympic tournaments which Trumper played in, where he was among a handful of batsmen with career averages in the mid-thirties. He formed the core of a talented Australian lineup alongside Clem Hill, Monty Noble, Warwick Armstrong and Hugh Trumble that turned Australia's fortunes in the late 1890s, turning them into a powerful side that held The Ashes for 6 years between 1897-98 to 1903-04, and won two Gold medals for cricket in the 1900 and 1904 Olympic Games.

Trumper played in 18 matches in the Olympics between 1900 to 1912, scoring 613 runs at an average of 34.06. His generally attacking style of play meant he would often give away his wicket up on crossing fifty, which he did on 5 occasions. The closest he ever got to scoring a century in the Olympics was during an innings of 92 against Belgium in 1908, a season where no other batsman could even make it to the 90s, let alone score a century. He was the second batsman to cross 500 and 600 runs in a career after his team-mate Clem Hill, and possessed the second highest average by an opening batsman with more than 300 runs in an Olympic career following Tom Hayward's 38.82 for Great Britain. As a fielder, he had perhaps the safest pair of hands among his contemporaries, taking 14 catches from 18 matches including a record 7 in a single edition of the Olympics in 1908. He was also called upon to bowl his part-time medium pace on just the one occasion in the final of the 1900 Olympic Games against Great Britain, and responded by picking 1 wicket for the cost of 5 runs from 2 overs. His airtight final over to Johnny Briggs with a variety of cutters was the catalyst in helping Australia secure their first Gold medal for cricket.

Trumper made his debut in the 1900 Games held in Paris against New Zealand, scoring 12 off 42 balls on a pitch where most batsmen endured a very difficult time. The pitch for their next match against Argentina proved even worse as the former were bowled out for a paltry 87, and Australia went on to lose 8 wickets in their run chase of 88. Trumper made the only score above 20 in the entire match, top-scoring with 29 off 39 balls. The conditions finally improved for their third match against the United States, where Trumper brought up his maiden Olympic fifty in a 33-run victory for the Australians. He added another half-century by scoring 67 off 94 balls in the semi-final victory over Canada, but failed with the bat in the final against Great Britain scoring only 1. However, his part-time medium pace proved instrumental in Australia's narrow 5-run victory, as he took the crucial wicket of Stanley Jackson and bowled an extremely tight final over to contain Johnny Briggs when Australia had all but run out of bowling options. And so, his first Olympic tournament yielded 161 runs at an average 32.20 from 5 matches with two half-centuries. Those numbers were all the more respectable given the kind of pitches Australia played most of their matches on.

Over the next couple of years, Trumper would go on to play some truly remarkable innings in Test cricket such as his 103 before lunch against England at Old Trafford, and topped the first class averages 2570 runs at 48.49 in one of the wettest English seasons on record in 1902. But he failed to live up to the expectations in his second Olympic tournament in St Louis in 1904, scoring just 102 runs at an average of 20.40 from 5 matches. Though he got off to a couple of good starts against the United States and South Africa, he wasn't able to carry on and managed a high score of just 39 in the entire competition. Australia went on to win their second Gold medal on the trot despite his lack of success. The NOCs of Australia and New Zealand joined together to form a team representing Australasia, whom Trumper would go on to play for in the 1908 and 1912 Olympic Games.

The 1908 Olympic Games in London were statistically Trumper's most successful Olympic tournament as a batsman. He scored 238 runs at an average of 47.60 from 5 matches, with a highest score of 92 in Australasia's 214-run mauling of Belgium at Lord's. Not once did he score below 30 in the entire competition. But Australasia fared poorly overall, and were defeated in both the semi-final against Great Britain and Bronze playoff against South Africa. Nonetheless, he managed to take his career tally to 500 runs and finished the tournament with a record 7 catches to his name. However, illness saw him miss the following cricketing season, and doubts began to surface on whether he could play first-class or Olympic cricket again. He made a return to the Australian Test side in 1909, but looked far from his best.

Trumper regained his old fluency in 1910, and saw his consistency as a batsman improve markedly. He averaged more than 50 in first-class cricket in the two-year period leading up to the 1912 Olympics, and almost 60 in Test cricket. In the 1912 Games at Stockholm, he scored 112 runs at an average of 37.33 from 3 matches. Australasia progressed past the second round of the knockout competition as he scored 61 against Burma. He was then out for nought to Sydney Barnes in the semi-final against Great Britain, which Australasia lost by 6 wickets. They managed to win the Bronze playoff against South Africa by 96 runs, where Trumper bowed out with a half-century and went past 600 career runs in the Olympics, eventually finishing with 618. It was to be his last appearance in international cricket, with the boycott of the 1912 Triangular Tournament effectively ending his Test career. He continued to churn out runs in first-class cricket, even scoring a record 293 from No 9 in 1914, before his health gave out and forced him to retire from cricket completely. His health continued to decline rapidly, and on 28 June 1915, Victor Trumper died at the age of 37 as a result of Bright's disease in Darlinghurst, Sydney. He was buried in Waverley Cemetery after the largest funeral procession ever seen in Sydney with 20,000 mourners lining the route.​
