Scorecard

The Iridium XI youth side will be looking to put in an improved performance against Sharky's Super Squad. Despite winning our previous match, the margin was only 4 runs, too close for comfort in my books. Sharky's won the toss and chose to bowl.

Opposing captain Edward Rebbeck may have rued his decision to bowl first as early as the third ball. A good length deliver from James McLean sat up nicely for Jake Thompson to send flying into the stands. Robert Wildsmith took over the opening spot vacated by Clem Powell's call up to the senior squad and today he showed he could just be as effective. His first two balls he faced were dispatched for 10 runs, and together with Thompson brought up the Iridium XI 50 from just 42 balls. As the partnership neared 100, Wildsmith was given out lbw despite replays showing the ball was going well down leg side. However, there was no such mistake in Thompson's dismissal for 40, McLean exacting revenge with a perfect length delivery. Boeve came and went for a brisk 24, given out caught behind off Muir. Boeve insisted that ball had not met bat and replays were inconclusive and he was given his marching orders.

Matt Allen was joined at the crease by keeper Brendon Cleary and they immediately set to work. A flurry of boundaries followed the Boeve dismissal and their 50-run stand was brought up at a frenetic pace, off just 29 balls. But when Cleary fell for a 29-ball 40 and Allen soon after the innings was in trouble of fizzing out. Wendell Rowe and Victor Bovell put the worries to rest with an equally destructive stand of 62 from 32 deliveries. When 40 overs finally rolled around, Iridium XI had racked up a big total of 324/6.

Sharky's openers got off to a steady start, going along at under 6.00 runs per over, almost unaware that they needed to be much more urgent. Pfaff made the first breakthrough, getting Randall Eve for 19 plumb lbw. Two overs later, Jodi Stucky was run out going for a fourth run which simply didn't exist and Kelton sent Rebbeck back lbw for 1, bring Sharky's to 42/3.

Greg Williams showed the right attitude by hitting 11 from the next Juffermans over. From then on, Kelton and Juffermans worked their magic, completely shutting down the scoring. The bowling was accurate, the fielding was sharp and the batsmen were getting suffocated as they ground their way to a 50-run stand off 63 balls. Kelton and Juffermans were soon both back into the attack and both reaped the rewards of their bowling, both claiming the wickets of Williams and Clarke lbw.

Pattipeilohy, soon after, cleaned up McLean, damaging the stump camera in the process bring Sharky's down 133/6. The last few batsmen decided to swing at everything that came their way before Pfaff returned and helped clean up the tail, with Rowe taking the final wicket to have Sharky's 113 runs short.

Scorecard

As was the case in our Twenty20 league, we had suffered a loss in the first game of the new season. The pressure was on to record a win here at BgUINNES RAMs CG. We decided to play a near full strength lineup, while still resting a few key players for the upcoming Pavilion Cup match this weekend. Opposing captain Steven Weckert won the toss and chose to bat. A poor decision.

Gerard Kelly will likely be cursing his captain for opting to bat on a bowler's paradise, dismissed with the very first ball of the match by Jesse Elloit, with his tame prod flying into the hands of Geoffrey Lindsay at second slip. Elloit and Niels van Dalen kept the pressure up, with two runs coming from the first two overs. Devasru Sara came up with the first boundary, albeit very unconvincingly and took 10 run from Elloit's third over. Sara was showing that batting might not be so difficult after all.

Jaco Frylinck was brought into the attack in the 11th over and struck immediately. Sara went too hard into a defensive stroke and it looped up for Chandradasa Kapugedera lurking at short leg. Obi-Wan Kenobi then struck another blow in the very next over, tempting Reinder van der Hoeven into a gung ho lofted drive only for the ball to be intercepted by Lindsay on the boundary. Frylinck then accounted for Michael Griffith thanks to some brilliant glovework by youth keeper Brendon Cleary, out stumped for 10.

The drinks break at the halfway stage of the innings only brought about more headaches for BgUINNES RAMs. Kenobi bowled a double-wicket maiden after the break, getting Kruger de Ridder for 19 and Githinji Odinga for a duck. The next over was a wicket maiden, this time from Kapugedera, bowling Todd Chapman with a well disguised slower ball, bringing the score to 84/7. Suresh Korale and Max Adams managed to push the score past 100 but Kapugedera cut down Korale before Frylinck's flipper proved to good for Weckert. A final wicket stand of 26 took BgUINNES RAMs to 132, Elloit returning to claim the final wicket.

If BgUINNES RAMs wanted to see how to bat on a sticky pitch, they only had to ask Brendon Cleary and Geoffrey Lindsay. They took the time to assess the pitch, dutifully defending and nudging singles to rotate the strike. The first boundary, again, was streaky, coming from a thick edge off Lindsay down to third man. Luck was clearly on Iridium XI's side as a top edge from Lindsay flew to the boundary before poor fielding gifted another four on the next ball.

The introduction of Chapman seemed to bring out Cleary's attacking streak, coming down the pitch to claim the innings' first six. The 50-run partnership came in the 12th over, off 72 balls. That stand was extended to 64 before Chapman got his revenge, dislodging Cleary with the doosra for a stodgy 25.

Lindsay continued with his patient innings, bringing up his half century from 72 balls. Clarence Skepple was content in feeding the strike to Lindsay before being dismissed lbw to Weckert for 15. Lindsay soon followed, out lbw for 60 to Chapman before Sam Burgess was out in the same fashion to the same bowler. By then it was 127/4, far too late to change the inevitable result.

Scorecard

Round 2 of the Pavilion Cup was here. The players' fatigue levels were carefully managed so as to have the strongest side possible take the field. The pitch was expected to be flat, so the spin duo of Chandradasa Kapugedera and Jaco Frylinck were rested with youth bowler Rik Juffermans taking over the spin duties. Kakanda Srivaths won the toss for Mighty Gangshans and as expected, chose to bat.

Bandula Aboobucker and James Ditchmen got off to a steady start. Good bowling from Jesse Elloit and Christof van Zandt meant they didn't get off to a runaway start, but the pitch condition prevented an early breakthrough. The first 10 overs were dotted with overs that were expensive and even a maiden. The first wicket came in the 13th over, with Ditchmen totally misreading a Patrick Garrick delivery for a bouncer and whilst attempting to duck, gloved the ball to Quinn Campbell behind the stumps [68/1]. Aboobucker followed 3 overs later lifting a shot from Rik Juffermans with hardly any power into the hands of a diving Alester Khozo [86/2].

Nuwan Thurston had taken on the role as aggressor and looked to hit his side back into the ascendancy, cruising to 32 off 28 balls. Elloit had left his fastest bowler for last, with Niels van Dalen coming on at third change. van Dalen bowled a near unplayable delivery to send Thurston's stumps flying [126/3]. Despite the wickets, the Mighty Gangshans' innings was still going along at a run a ball. Ketan Sarup and Khadim Satti came together to try and restart some sort of momentum but Garrick and van Dalen had other ideas, keeping the bowling tight and dragging down the run rate. Their 50-run partnership came up from 70 balls and just as they looked to stamp on the pedal, Satti chased after a wide ball from van Dalen, hitting it straight to Khozo at point [187/4].

van Dalen soon had his third wicket, nabbing captain Kakanda Srivaths lbw for 4 [195/5]. In the midst of it all, Sarup had almost snuck to his half century off 55 balls. He was unable to push on as he became van Dalen's fourth victim, a wild slog sending the ball vertical and back down for Campbell to claim the catch [207/6]. van Dalen finished with excellent figures of 10-0-28-4. At this stage, Elloit and van Zandt returned to shut down any resistance from the tail, the last 4 wickets falling for the addition of just 38 runs, ending the innings on 245, a sub-par total on a beautiful batting track.

IXIvMightyGangshans1.png

Quinn Campbell and Geoffrey Lindsay came out all guns blazing. Campbell smoked a six in the first over and together with Lindsay took 15 from the second over. After 3 overs, the score was 33/0. The fireworks were soon extinguished when Lindsay was caught behind for 18 [34/1]. Alester Khozo never looked comfortable during his stay, bowled by Ashley Onyons for 17. Onyons then struck another blow, winning a dubious appeal for lbw against Campbell, to have Iridium XI's chase wobbling at 67/3.

Clarence Skepple was joined at the crease by Sam Burgess, who was under some pressure to make a substantial score to fit his price tag. Unlike the brief Campbell-Lindsay partnership, which was full of explosions, Skepple and Burgess went about consolidating, looking to run singles and when the bad balls showed up, they were put away for boundaries. Their 50 run stand came up from 54 balls and Burgess reached his 50 from 47 balls. Just as the 100-run stand approached, Skepple was brilliantly run out against the run of play [165/4]. Burgess carried on with Arnell Colgan, using the same tactics as when he was batting with Skepple. As the target neared, Skepple accelerated, racing from 78 to 100 in just nine balls. His century was brought up with a bludgeoned strike for four, at the same time locking the score. A dab for a single the next ball confirmed Iridium XI's advancement to the third round.

Scorecard

With one win and a loss in our Twenty20 league, we looked to build on the momentum of our Pavilion Cup match win. Juggling the player's fitness levels was starting to get tough, with no choice but to play a few players who featured in the Pavilion Cup match. The pitch was great for bowling, and Christof van Zandt won the toss and had no hesitation in bowling first.

Niels van Dalen, in top form, rewarded van Zandt's decision to bowl first with the wicket of Grant Allen in the 4th over. He tamely hit the ball back to the bowler, his 4 runs eating up 11 balls. However, after Allen's wicket, Yugbyboyz's took full control. Dax Holling and Casey Ellis went on the offensive and hit their way into the driver's seat. They were especially brutal towards Chandradasa Kapugedera, his first two overs being plundered for 31 runs. Both brought up their half centuries, Ellis from 31 and Holling from 36 balls. The partnership went into triple figures before Kapugedera regained some respectability with two wickets in two balls. Despite the minor setback, Yugbyboyz's were still sailing along at 122/3. van Dalen was brought back for his final spell and accounted for Holling for 65. Robert Jude's smacked a 14-ball 27 to push the final score to 174/5.

IXIvYugbyboyz1.png

The chase started promisingly, with Clem Powell and Taj Alam leading Iridium XI to 50 without loss from 46-balls. They needed to up the scoring to keep up with the required run rate and in so doing, their partnership came undone. Alam went for a quick single but was sent back by Powell. Upon realising his partner had not run, Alam tried to make his way back but was caught well short, run out for 20. Powell then showed poor judgement when he chased after a Ranasinghe Sahabandu delivery, only to miss the ball and be stumped by the keeper. Clarence Skepple came and went for a quick 18, bowled by Gul Tamragouri. The required run rated had now leaped to almost 14.00. Anil Khan hit 3 boundaries from a Tamragouri over before Alester Khozo continued his struggles this season, his dismissal a carbon copy of Powell's. The game was at this point well and truly gone with the required run rate now touching 20.00. Khan and Brendon Cleary brought the final score to 145/4, 29 runs short.

The loss has pushed us down to sixth on the table, just outside the relegation zone. We have it all to do if we want a top three finish this season.

As far as I know, our 4th division t20 league in Zimbabwe looks a lot easier than yours in NZL. :p Openers could have been a bit more aggressive, but that said, the game was half lost when they managed 174 on a sticky pitch.

Scorecard

We entered this match as one of three unbeaten teams in our Youth league. There were no changes from the previous two youth lineups. Noel Boeve won the toss and chose to bat on a flat pitch.

Iridium XI's innings got off to a rocky start as they lost two early wickets. Frank Hughes claimed a wicket with his first ball, that of Robert Wildsmith. Hughes came back in his next over to have Noel Boeve lbw for 8 and have Iridium XI reeling at 26/2. However, that's about as good as it got for The Elite as Matt Allen joined Jake Thompson out in the middle. Both of the batsmen got stuck into some ordinary bowling, initially not with boundaries, but with ones and twos. The 50 partnership came up from 43 balls and Thompson continued his fine form with another half century from 38 balls.

At this stage the run rate had soared to over 7.00 and for the remainder of the innings, it barely deviated from there. Allen brought up his own 50, raising the 100 partnership at the same time, taking just 88 balls. Just as the boundaries started to flow, Thompson nibbled at a ball that was moving away from his to be caught behind for 83. Soon after, Allen brought up his third Youth century, from 75 balls. Brendon Cleary, coming straight from the senior T20 match the previous day, showed no signs of fatigue as he brought up the 50-run stand from 29 balls.

The Elite had to resort to a freakish dismissal to dislodge Allen. Mortimer Reddrop's delivery was left for the keeper and, thinking the ball was dead, Allen wandered out of the crease. Peter Gibson whipped off the bails and appealed, the umpire having no choice but to send Allen marching, cutting his innings off at 121. Cleary didn't allow the loss of his partner to affect him, instead forging a brutal stand with Wendell Rowe. From here on in, it was milestones galore. Cleary brought up his 50, and then the 50 run partnership. Rowe was especially savage, bringing up the innings' third half century from a breakneck 24 balls. A massive six from Cleary took the partnership to 100 from 50 balls. The Elite ended up being mauled to tune of 351/4 from 40 overs.

IXIvTheElite1.png

The Elite would need something special to chase down the massive target set for them. Instead it was the Iridium XI bowlers who pulled out all the stops. Pfaff, in his second over, beat Peter Gibson for raw pace, hitting 150kph and trapping him dead in front. Three balls later he had Duncan Anneveld in a tangle with a bouncer, gloving an easy catch to the keeper, bringing the score to 6/2. Matt Allen soon had that score at 21/3 with a sharp run out of Frank Hughes. The required run rate was now nudging 10.00.

Boeve brought on Daniel Kelton and soon the game was all but sealed. Robin Chamberlain was bowled with a beautiful delivery from Kelton before Rik Juffermans induced George Hope into a rash slog, which Cleary gobbled up. Two more wickets fell to Kelton's next over to have The Elite in utter disarray at 43/7. When teams are at this stage, the tail usually rallies to give the score some semblance of respectability. That never happened. Viktor Pattipeilohy took two wickets in the 21st over, the third occurrence in this innings alone, before returning in his next over to finish the match, the scoreboard reading a sorry 64 all out, Iridium XI winners by a mammoth 287 runs. Today, The Elite were anything but.

The massive win was enough to put us into first place on the table. There now remains only two unbeaten teams after Hillegom CC were brought down by The Middle Stump.
