Scorecard

We decided to enter a friendly league to get more game time. It was also a good chance to compete against teams outside our leagues. The pitch looked prime for seam bowlers, and because of that, Jesse Elloit chose to bowl when he won the toss.

Jesse Elloit and Christof van Zandt both registered maidens in their first overs. Gloucester Royals' opening pair of Sepala Vitharana and Kasee Buttsworth were happy to play defensively and bide their time. van Zandt was the first to falter as Buttsworth put him away for a four and a six from the 7th over. Elloit's normally lethal yorkers were being dug out grimly. Elloit wisely took van Zandt and himself out of the attack and brought on Patrick Garrick and Jaco Frylinck. The bowling change didn't have the impact Elloit would have wanted as Vitharana and Buttsworth registered a 50-run opening stand. Gloucester Royals had laid a great platform.

Frylinck finally made a breakthrough as Vitharana chased after a wide delivery and nicked to the keeper for 22. Frylinck then combined with Campbell again to account for Buttsworth, going for an ambitious sweep shot. Garrick was taken out and Niels van Dalen brought in. van Dalen's growing reputation of taking wickets in his first over grew as he bowled a smart slower ball to have Carlos Wagner hit a mistimed shot to Alester Khozo. Garrick was brought back on and in his second over of his second spell, he had Wilfred Oldfield out lbw for a scratchy 8. Gloucester Royals were now stuttering at 82/4.

van Dalen claimed his second wicket soon after, that of Colin Short. Chester Emmanuel and Daniel Racker took the Gloucester Royals past 100 before Emmanuel was brilliantly stumped off Frylinck for 11. Raydon Clairmonte then nibbled at a van Dalen delivery to be caught by Garrick before Campbell teamed up with Frylinck for the fourth time, stumping Racker after the batsmen wandered out of the crease whilst the ball was still alive. Elloit then returned and cleaned up the tail with two wickets in consecutive balls. Rik Cuppens summed up the shambles the Gloucester Royals innings had become, treading on his own stumps to be given out hit wicket. Gloucester Royals had lost their last 9 wickets for just 89 runs after being 51/0 at one stage.

Quinn Campbell and Taj Alam knew they had no need to rush in this chase and they no intention to do so. Both batsmen took the time to play themselves in with the Gloucester Royals' bowlers making the pitch look quite innocuous. The 50 run partnership came off 66 balls, with Campbell doing the bulk of the scoring. Alam decided to go after the bowling and overtook Campbell on his way to a run a ball half century, bringing up the 100-run stand at the same time. Dilip Bastian ensured that they would not be beaten by 10 wickets as he trapped Alam plumb lbw for 58. When Campbell was bowled by Walter Berriman for 48, only 22 runs were required to win. Alester Khozo and Anil Khan ticked off the required runs without additional casualties, Iridium XI taking the match by 8 wickets.

Scorecard

After the fun of the friendly match the previous day, it was now time to get serious with our Senior One Day match. The pitch was a minefield, prime for bowlers, spinners in particular. House Park CC captain George Bennett won the toss and promptly chose to bowl first.

Quinn Campbell and Taj Alam started off very cautiously, happily defending deliveries from the bowling pair of Scott Tabart and Ernest Fitness. The singles came in a steady flow and another 50-run opening partnership was registered between the batsmen. Alec Pomersbach broke the stand immediately after, a sharp spinning ball rearranging Campbell's stumps for 19. Alam decided to go on the attack after the wicket and brought up his 50 from 61 balls. Alester Khozo's poor form continued as a lazy drive did nothing but induce an edge to keeper Reginald Watsford, out for 10.

The pitch started to take its toll on the batsmen as the runs started to dry up. Alam and Anil Khan struggled to put the ball away and to pierce the gaps. Stef Simons got the key wicket of Alam with a well disguised slower ball to have him plumb lbw for 63, before returning in his next over to have Sam Burgess stumped for a 5-ball duck. Simons then had three in three overs as Watsford gobbled up a thin edge from Khan to bring the score to 126/5. Arnell Colgan was the last recognised batsmen in and his contribution would be key.

Colgan found a sturdy ally in Chandradasa Kapugedera as they took the score past 150. Kapugedera tried to up the scoring rate with a lusty drive, lifting his foot. Watsford had the bails off in an instant to gift Simons his fourth wicket. van Zandt was dismissed by Marvan Jayatilleke and Colgan was finally sent packing for 18. The last two wickets fell easily after the wicket of Colgan, ending the Iridium XI innings in the 46th over for 182 all out.

Iridium XI would need a very disciplined bowling effort to defend 182. Jesse Elloit drew first blood with the wicket of Demissie Kijana lbw for 9. Duncan House and George Bennett steadied the innings, taking the House Park CC score past 50. Jaco Frylinck ensured they wouldn't be doing much more, caught by Kapugedera for 20. Elloit decided to swap his spinners, introducing Kapugedera to partner Patrick Garrick. His second over garnered the wicket of House for 31, out attempting an ugly sweep shot, looping the ball to Khan. Kapugedera then got Henry Tregoning, lbw before Garrick reduced House Park CC to 86/5, Kapugedera taking a simple catch.

Elloit now brought on both spinners to take full use of the pitch and Frylinck responded nabbing David McBeath lbw for 22. At this stage Frylinck had astonishing figures of 8-4-7-2. Next over, Kapugedera had his third, with Fitness dragging a wide ball onto his stumps, House Park CC now falling apart at 107/7. Iridium XI sensed the end was nigh and Kapugedera helped himself to a fourth wicket before Elloit and van Zandt cleaned up the final two wickets. House Park CC were all out 129, 52 runs short.

There was no change in our place on the table, as we stay at third thanks to our better NRR.

For a while I thought I would lose that match.

Yea, you get some random names showing up. iirc, Hedger played a team that had guy with a question mark in his name.

Yeah you did exceptionally well to defend 182 , Frylinck's bowling was immense , he really kept the runs down

Scorecard

We had made it to Round 3 of the Pavilion Cup and I couldn't be more unhappy. My seniors were knackered from the constant travelling and wasn't as though we were going to win this competition. So I decided to give my seniors a break and blood some youths. A reversed youth lineup was named and the youths were told to go out and muck around. Surrey Snakes captain won the toss and chose to bat.

Iridium XI started off well with Barney Pfaff dismissing Geoff Jones in the first over, shattering the stumps with raw pace. In the subsequent overs, Victor Bovell and Rik Juffermans chipped in to bring Surrey Snakes to 89/3. But that's when they kicked it up a gear. Jack Abood and Nicol MacDonald combined for a gigantic unbeaten 304-run partnership for the 4th wicket. Abood just missed out on the double ton, finishing not out on 190 with MacDonald helping himself to 136 not out. Barney Pfaff bore most of the brunt, his 10 overs going for 105. Surrey had racked up 393/3 in their 50 overs.

The Surrey Snakes fielders were all puzzled when they saw the Iridium XI bowlers Viktor Pattipeilohy and Pfaff come out to open the batting. Surrey Snakes were about to be decimated as the two rocketed to a 200-run opening stand, which would have been awesome but that didn't happen. In fact the whole team didn't even reach 200. Or 100. They were all out for 51. Noel Boeve got bored towards the end of the innings and kicked down his own stumps, Michael Holding style.

If you read it, you'll see why I got thrashed ;)

Yes, why did you opened the batting with Viktor Pattipeilohy and Pfaff? Didn't you posted the line-up in time and Hedger posted the inverted line-up for you or what? Or did you experimented in this match.

Whatever it is, it was very surprising to see the bowlers coming in to bat first and not the genuine openers.

Oh yes, it was all me :spy But read it and you'll find out.

Well, well bad for you Truman for that thrashing defeat. Better luck next time.
