Story FTP: I've never been one for titles

Manager Diary

23rd November

After leaving on Wednesday, taking leave for the rest of the season to holiday in England. It was cold and wet when we arrived and I immediately regretted holidaying in Europe during winter. I told my assistant the previous day that I wanted Lansing and Goedhart both in our starting eleven. With the timezone change, I forgot what time our game finished but my assistant texted me after the game telling me of a demolishing of Ksa Royals. We batted first and made a mammoth 490/4, Young leading the way with 224 off 148, including 6 sixes. O'Leary also made a brilliant century, scoring 157 off 91. All our bowlers chipped in with wickets as Bollinger and Tindall took 3 a piece, Lansing with 2 and Yousif and Goedhart taking a wicket each as we bowled them out for 73.

Hedger's Team 490/4 (Young 224, O'Leary 157, Thompson 2/75, Anderson 2/115) def. Ksa Royals 73 a.o. (Slattery 33, Turner 9, Bollinger 3/15, Tindall 3/17) by 417 runs

30th November

I had a nice week in England, the weather starting to clear up. Taking a break from the cricket, I headed up to Manchester to see my favourite football team, Manchester United play at Old Trafford and winning comfortably. My assistant forgot to update me during the week but gave me the results of the two senior games played.

T20: Hedger's Team 226/1 (Mol 128*, Pettinger 89*, Sweeney 1/37) def. We're Not Wearing Hockey Pads 59 a.o. (Prasad 26, Haque 13, Yousif 4/13, Juffermans 3/7) by 167 runs

SOD: Hammertown Tigers 201/1 (Williams 80*, Muir 61*, Yousif 1/43) def. Hedger's Team 200 a.o. (Omara 65, Delaney 41, Chesney 3/51, Ghambir 2/26) by 9 wickets with 39 balls remaining

7th December

With our loss against One Day league leaders, our season was pretty much wrapped up so I told my assistant to send me a quick update at the end of the week while I enjoyed my last week in England, enjoying the southern parts of England. At the end of the week, I was told we finished 2nd in One Day and Twenty20 leagues while being relegated in our youth league, news that had already been confirmed prior to this week.

T20: Salcette Sharks 116/3 (Fernandes 44, Faulkner 28, Lansing 1/14, Yousif 1/23) def. Hedger's Team 112/6 (Omara 38*, Mol 33, Wanigasekera 2/16, Awesome 2/23) by 7 wickets with 27 balls remaining

SOD: Hedger's Team 386/4 (Omara 170, Young 106, Harvelle 3/77, Haynes 1/64) def. K-Swiss X1 69 a.o. (Bollinger 4/23, Goedhart 2/13) by 317 runs

12th December

Today was the day I left Paris, after spending a week there, and would return to Bangladesh to prepare for the new season. My phone vibrated and I checked it to find a message from my assistant, suggesting a player that I might want to have a look at, a 20 year old USA batsman, who had played for the National U19 side this season. I checked the time remaining for the auction of Arnold Schultz and saw there was only 4 minutes remaining. I'd have to make a decision there and then. After considering it for a second, I called his manager and asked what the current offer was and when finding it was $365,000, I considered it intensely and told him I would place an offer of $392,118. A few minutes later, he called me back and told me the player was now mine. He was going to be an important part of our batting lineup in the years to come.

Hedger's Team Start Season with Strong Performance

Prior to the season, Brendon Hedger announced that Ruben Mol would be stripped of his T20 captaincy in hope that it would help him better focus on his fifty over game, with Michael Young taking over the captaincy, despite having only played 2 T20 matches in the past 3 seasons. The loss of captaincy didn't affect Ruben Mol though as he scored his 10th career T20 century, smashing 124* off 73 deliveries, combining with O'Keeffe (48) in an opening stand of 157 runs. Arnold Schultz wasn't able to do much on his debut, coming in late in the innings and was caught on the boundary for 7 off 5 balls. He will have his chances as the season goes on though, especially in the T20 format.

Chasing 181 for victory, skipper Magee and Woodbury gave their best efforts for Eels Cricket Club, scoring 52 and 41 respectively but a good all-round bowling performance restricted the visitors to 143/8 from their 20 overs, Dharson taking 2/35 while the rest of the bowlers picked up one wicket each. Ruben Mol, not surprisingly, took the MOTM award for his stunning century, as Hedger's Team won by 37 runs.

Toss: Hedger's Team (Elected to bat)
Result: Hedger's Team 180/2 (Mol 124*, O'Keeffe 48, Reeves 2/32) def. Eels Cricket Club (Magee 52, Woodbury 41, Dharson 2/35, Lansing 1/23) by 37 runs
MOTM: Ruben Mol (124* off 73)

Goedhart Stars in Comfortable Win

Brendon Hedger made a few changes in the lineup to his regular side from the previous season, opting to open with Young and Omara, Mol dropping down the order while Delaney slotted in at 3, where he made a couple of good performances at towards the back end of last season. Lansing, who was favoured against Dharson towards the back end of last season was dropped for his partner fast bowler, leading the attack along with Bollinger, while Goedhart kept his spot after putting in some stable performances towards the back end of last season, Hedger's Team only playing the one spinner in skipper, Tindall. Lars van der Hoeven would take over the gloves permanently in the One Day arena, and Pettinger found himself dropped completely because of this change. van der Hoeven stated in pre-season that he wasn't prepared to keep in both the One Day and T20 formats, so Pettinger who vowed to give up the gloves after last season would take over the gloves in the shorter format.

It was an uneven pitch, favouring the quick bowlers but when Tindall won the toss, he had no hesitation in batting first. He was one to put runs on the board ahead of anything else. The openers had trouble against the opening combination of Ritchie and Kerr and Omara became an early victim, as he was yorked by Kerr. Delaney got off to a strong start, and Young was just starting to look good but was unluckily run out, sent back by Delaney, albeit too late. O'Leary didn't waste any time getting himself in, clipping the ball off his pads for 3 first ball and nearly smashed the pavilion window 3 balls later with a huge six. The two experienced batsmen settled and on a tough pitch, battled through to drinks to be 111/2 after 25 overs, Delaney 51* off 72 while O'Leary was 36* off 45.

The drinks break wasn't what the visitors needed though as Delaney couldn't add to his 51, bowled by Dalley 3 balls into the first over after drinks. O'Leary got to his fifty off 55 balls, and he seemed to be on track for yet another century. That wasn't to be the case though as he was bowled through the gate by Wright for 52. Mol looked to be finding some form, hitting a nice 20 but became the fourth batsmen to be bowled in the innings, Wright striking again. Wright's lethal spell continued as Yousif picked out Ghoshal at mid on perfectly for 3 and at 155/6, Hedger's Team were in trouble. It was Lars van der Hoeven's first chance to really show his full potential and he looked good, scoring runs at nearly a run a ball, while Bollinger seemed to be content letting him score. The Aussie quick was caught at slip though, for 6 off 19 and with not much batting left in the shed, it was going to be up to van der Hoeven to get the team over 200. And that's exactly what he did, hitting 4 boundaries on his way to a 49 ball fifty but that was all he could do, giving Ritchie another catch 2 balls later. Goedhart made 8 before he gave Kelly his second wicket before Dharson and Tindall added a few runs to get the team to 228/9 from their 50 overs.

HTvFG-1stInn_zps35ec06f8.png

Allen and Ghoshal got Fort Gran CC off to a good start, hitting 36 runs off the first 7 overs, but Bollinger made the inevitable strike, getting the edge of Allen and Young took a good catch at first slip. Tindall made it two down when he brought Catchlove down the wicket and van der Hoeven did the rest, some quick glovework from the young keeper to whip off the bails. While Ghoshal fought for his team, everyone seemed to fall around him, the skipper striking again as he got the ball to turn vigorously, under the bat of Lad and cannoning into the off-stump. Shibu liked the look of Goedhart and took him over long off for six but it was a beautiful comeback ball from the young pace bowler, Shibu poking at the ball, and only managing an edge to O'Leary at second slip. Goedhart showed his talent once again, taking the huge wicket of Ghoshal for 40, as he fended at a quicker short ball and could only edge it through to van der Hoeven who took a simple catch. Goedhart then got the ball swinging away, as Anuradha went chasing it and edged it to the right of van der Hoeven who did extremely well to take the catch in front of Young at slip, as he continued his impressive match. Goedhart finished his 5 over spell with figures of 3/25 and Fort Gran CC were 98/6 after 22 overs.

Dharson conceded a few runs though, giving the home side a chance but trapped Kelly in front for 15 to put his team right back on top, and bowled Ritchie a few overs later to take his second wicket. Kerr decided there was no point playing conservatively, as he tried to hit Goedhart over his head but a subtle change in pace did the trick as he gave a simple catch for Yousif at mid off. Evert Goedhart was known for his lethal yorker which could trouble any batsman and it was only right that a perfectly executed yorker get Goedhart his maiden one day five wicket haul, Dalley unable to keep it out, bowled for a duck as Fort Gran CC were bowled out for 140, Goedhart finishing with 5/30 from 6.4 overs. It was a very strong bowling performance from the visitors, Dharson and Tindall backing up the star with 2 wickets a piece, while Bollinger put in a handy economical spell in the early overs, being rewarded with a wicket. Yousif didn't have the best game in the world but was economical and was a little unlucky not to pick up a wicket himself.

Toss: Hedger's Team (Elected to bat)
Result: Hedger's Team 228/9 (O'Leary 52, Delaney 51, Wright 3/40, Kelly 2/33) def. fort gran cc 140 a.o. (Ghoshal 40, Allen 21, Goedhart 5/30, Tindall 2/26) by 88 runs
MOTM: Evert Goedhart (5/30 off 6 overs and 8 off 13)

Omara, Young, Lansing Star in Emphatic Pavilion Cup Win

After losing the toss, Hedger's Team were sent into bat on a flat pitch against a team they were expected to beat, and beat comfortably. After a slow start, Young and Schultz, the latter playing in his first one day match for the club, looked to get a move on, Schultz dispatching Jacobson for a four and six in consecutive balls but couldn't go on to make a huge score, bowled by Jacobson a couple of overs later for 36 off 45. Young and Omara took to the stumpys' bowling though and brought up a 150 run partnership in only 113 balls. Young brought up his century an over later but he couldn't go on to make a huge century, as he was trapped in front by Back for 102, coming off 96 balls. O'Keefe and Omara continued on, hammering the bowlers all over the park, bringing up a hundred run partnership in only 67 balls. Omara ended up scoring 162 off 98 deliveries before he chipped the ball back to Jacobson who took a simple return catch. In the end, Hedger's Team made 410/3, O'Keefe finishing with 83* off 59, his first One Day half century, while O'Leary made 12* off 8.

HTvST-1stInnings_zpse0f02e0d.png

Chasing such a huge total, stumpys couldn't afford to get too far behind and although they put on a very good opening stand, a run rate of less than 6 runs per over meant they had fallen behind. Goedhart broke the partnership though, trapping Parry in front for 39 off 47. Stumpys lost their other opener in the next over, as Bedford came down the track to Whiteman but was beaten by the turn and van der Hoeven finished the stumping. Lansing was then brought back into the attack and had Parker out LBW for 18, and stumpys went into drinks at 128/3. A double blow from Lansing a few overs after drinks really had stumpys on the back foot, as Morrow feathered an edge to van der Hoeven and then hit Favell on the toe with an inswinging yorker and he was on his way for a golden duck. Lansing made it 4 when he took Chhachhi's off-stump out of the ground and stumpys were 142/6. Lansing made it 5 in his 9th over as he trapped Clough in front for 6 and stumpys were all but finished when Lansing made it 6 by bowling James. Jacobson and Goswami tried to prolong the finish but could only do so much as Goswami gave Goedhart a return catch and he had his second wicket. The skipper finished it off a few overs later as van der Hoeven did a sharp bit of keeping to whip off the bails as Jacobson's back foot was just raised. In the end, stumpys were bowled out for 180, Omara taking the MOTM award for his huge century and Hedger's Team would be in the second round of the Pavilion Cup.

Toss: stumpys (Elected to bowl)
Result: Hedger's Team 410/3 (Omara 162, Young 102, Jacobson 2/82, Back 1/69) def. stumpys 180 a.o. (Bedford 56, Parry 39, Lansing 6/42, Goedhart 2/32) by 230 runs
MOTM: Victor Omara (162 off 98)

I'm too lazy to update T20 games as well so I'll only do one day games in detail.

T20: Goan Gaurs CC 91/5 (Fernandes 27, Brenner 20, Yousif 2/14, Goedhart 2/17) def. Hedger's Team 90/9 (Yousif 22, O'Leary 14, Liddicut 2/12, Awesome 2/16) by 5 wickets with 23 balls remaining

Mol, Yousif Star in Hard Fought Victory

It was a sticky pitch but Tindall decided that runs on the board was the most important thing, as he elected to bat first. Omara couldn't back up his 160 the previous week though as he edged to Li at second slip off Kutumbaka for 4. Delaney didn't waste any time, hitting a boundary along with two sixes to go to 22 off only 12 balls. Young struggled on the other hand, as he looked to support Delaney who was going strong at the other end, but Young's frustration got the better of him as he tried to hit Hastings' slower ball out of the park but edged through to Wright for 16 off 39. O'Leary took Li out of the park only 5 balls into his innings to get off the mark but Delaney couldn't capitalise on his very good start, as he was trapped in front by Hastings for 48. O'Leary and Mol battled through to be 112/3 at drinks, still a long way to go if they were to put a decent total on the board. O'Leary was looking good but couldn't go on to make a huge score, as he was caught by Li off Hastings for 27. Lars van der Hoeven came to the crease and supported Mol nicely, as Mol brought up his fifty. van der Hoeven couldn't go on though as he was out LBW off Li for 22. Mol and Yousif tried to get the total above 250 and were doing a good job until Mol was bowled by Li for 74 off 91. Bollinger had his chance to put on a little cameo but was out for a duck before Yousif's cameo ended the next over as he edged Khatib behind for 22 off 14. Goedhart and Lansing got the total to 250/9 though, both finishing on 9*.

HTvBD-1stInn-1_zps1b35fe03.png

BD Spark needed a good start, and albeit not starting as they would have liked, Pasapuleti edging Lansing to Omara in the gully for 3, they managed to battle through the first 10 overs without losing another wicket. Goedhart broke through though with his first ball, as Laxman poked at one nipping away a little and van der Hoeven took the catch. Van der Hoeven was in the game again shortly after as Tindall pushed one away from Li, who played for the spin but saw it go straight on and van der Hoeven did the rest, Li on his way for 17. Yousif had BD Spark in huge trouble when he trapped Wright in front. At drinks, the home side was 96/4, and needed to get a partnership going if they were to have any chance. Azharuddin looked to provide the spark that BD Spark needed, taking Lansing for consecutive boundaries before putting him over the fence in his next over. Lansing's figures at the end of a forgettable second spell was 1/50, and was wishing he hadn't bowled. After 40 overs, BD Spark were 164/4 and with 87 runs needed to win, it wasn't out of the question. At least not until Tindall bowled Gopinath for 46, bringing up his 300th career one day wicket, before Azharuddin edged Yousif to van der Hoeven who took another catch. Bollinger then made another double strike a couple of overs later and made it 3 in his final over, while BD Spark finished their innings at 200/9, losing by 50 runs.

Toss: Hedger's Team (Elected to bat)
Result: Hedger's Team 250/8 (Mol 74, Delaney 48, Li 3/40, Hastings 3/54) def. BD Spark 200/9 (Azharuddin 49, Gopinath 46, Bollinger 3/27, Yousif 2/33)
MOTM: Aladdin Yousif (22 off 14 and 2/33 off 10 overs)

O'Keeffe Maiden Century Helps Hedger's Team to Comfortable Victory

It was a game of firsts for Hedger's Team as O'Keeffe scored his first One day century, Brayden Delaney captained Hedger's Team for the first time and also scored his first duck for the side, Hugo Duncan made his senior debut at only 16 years of age, and Aidan O'Leary took his first wicket for the club.

Batting first, Hedger's Team made 320/5, after losing van der Hoeven early but a second wicket partnership of 134 runs helped Hedger's Team build a foundation for a late burst. Arnold Schultz scored his first half century for the club in his second one day game, hitting 69 off 78. O'Keeffe continued on though while Pettinger couldn't make the most in his chance back in the one day side, only scoring 28. Duncan struggled in a tough situation for the youngster and only made 6 before being bowled by Paul. The captaincy affected Delaney's batting as he was bowled through the gate for a golden duck. Aidan O'Leary played an unbelievable cameo though, batting the lowest he ever has, but scoring 74* off 39 while O'Keeffe finished on 135* off 145, as the two put on a 125 run partnership in only 12.3 overs.

HTvEW-1stInn_zpsd55ba1e2.png

Hedger's Team didn't get off to the best start with the ball as Enoch Warriors raced away to 1/91 off 14 overs, Evans the only wicket to fall, run out by O'Leary. Whiteman got the wicket of Berger though, as he swept the ball straight to Bollinger at deep mid wicket. O'Leary was given the ball for the first time in a long while but couldn't do much, going for 53 runs in 6 overs, as Enoch Warriors were 172/2 after 26 overs. Yousif made the needed breakthrough, getting Pilliani for 62 and then it got worse for the visitors as Parry was run out by Lansing. Clayton needed to go on to make a big score, but couldn't as he chipped the ball straight back to Yousif for 35. Whiteman then got his own return catch as Paul popped the ball up to him. Lansing all but finished the visitors when he got through the defences of Manandhar, on his way for 28. Whiteman pushed hard for his selection in the one day side as he struck again, trapping Ballans in front as he finished with 3/36 from his 10 overs. Yousif then got the wicket of Arnold as he edged to O'Leary at slip and Enoch Warriors were 229/9. O'Leary was thrown the ball again and took his first one day wicket, as Shahzad cut the ball straight to Delaney at point and O'Leary finished the game with a wonderful half century, a catch, a runout and a wicket. Yousif finished with figures of 3/35 from 9 overs as the visitors were bowled out for 239 in the 43rd over, as Hedger's Team progressed to Round 3 of the Cup.

Toss: Enoch Warriors (Elected to bowl)
Result: Hedger's Team 320/5 (O'Keeffe 135*, O'Leary 74*, Paul 3/63, Ballans 2/46) def. Enoch Warriors 239 a.o. (Pilliani 62, Berger 42, Yousif 3/35, Whiteman 3/36) by 81 runs

National Role Won't Affect Club Duties

On Saturday, manager Brendon Hedger was appointed as the assistant coach of the Canadian national team, who made the quarter finals of the World Cup last season, and won the world cup 3 tournaments ago. Canada are looking to regain the success that they had in that world cup winning year. After losing their world cup winning manager, they have tried two new managers, in the two world cup terms since that world cup winning season, and with success needed, Fudgie was appointed the new Canadian national team coach after being assistant the previous two seasons. He didn't take much time announcing his new backroom staff, with the previous manager and other two assistants cleared out, Brendon Hedger along with two others named as the assistant coaches. Fudgie announced in an interview, "I have a solid backroom staff employed. I've taken a notice of Hedger, who has shown his managerial talents going close to promotion last season, and his upbringing of Victor Omara, and Brayden Delaney recently have caught my eye".

Brendon Hedger has released a press statement regarding his role as the new Canadian national assistant coach, "I am very pleased to have been given this chance, I hope that we can have a successful campaign and repeat the World Cup success we had in Season 14. I will still have full focus on my club side though, as I look to guarantee us promotion in both senior leagues this season. Having two roles at once won't affect me, I've been in this position before and it's completely manageable. The club side is still my main focus, although not to say I do not regard the Canadian job as unimportant." Hedger's only previous international experience has come in Season's 14 and 15, where he played in an important role as Netherlands U19's assistant coach, who really took the Season 15 U19 World Cup by storm, only to be knocked out in the semi finals by Australia who went on to beat UAE in the final.

Canadian and Hedger's Team batsmen, Victor Omara and Brayden Delaney are on the verge of their national selections. Despite previous comments that they were still a season or two away from national call-ups, manager Fudgie has released a statement saying their selections may be sooner rather than later. At 23 years of age, both batsmen are pressing their claims for national selection and both are ready to take their chance should it come over the next two seasons. "Of our younger players, Victor and Brayden are at the top of the list and are challenging our older players for selection". Currently, in Canada's 30 man squad, Jackson Dugan is the only U25 player, at 23 years of age and was a key bowler in the Season 15 U19 World Cup. He took 41 wickets at National U19 OD level, more than any other Canadian bowler, Owen Ryan the only other with 40 wickets, who started his National career also at 23, but injury forced him into early retirement, meaning he only played 3 games for 5 wickets. Omara said in an interview, "I'm ready. I've been preparing myself to play National cricket. I won't know for sure until the moment comes but I feel like I'm as ready as I can be. I'll wait as long as I need to. I would much prefer to start my career earlier but it's not the end of the world if I have to wait another two or three seasons."

Goedhart Stars in Easy Win

Despite best efforts from Giri Nitu, the Hedger's Team bowlers were too strong for K-Swiss X1. Hilditch and Harvelle fell early, with Goedhart taking both wickets. Dareeju and Boelen fought back with a 50 run partnership before Goedhart was brought back into the attack and struck with both wickets, to end up with figures of 4/24 from 10 overs. Nitu fought strongly, but couldn't get any support as Whiteman took 3 wickets along with another 2 from Lansing and Dharson picked up the final wicket. Nitu was left stranded on 38* as the team made 133 all out. Schultz couldn't make the most of his chance back in the side, only scoring 20, but Young and Delaney did the rest, both scoring 55*, as they chased down the target with over 25 overs to spare.

Too lazy to do a full update for my Pavilion Cup game but we were knocked out in the 3rd round against a much tougher opposition, including 3 national players, despite an excellent effort.

Omara Pushes Case for National Selection

Victor Omara continues to make his presence felt, as he backed up his double century last week with another century against Barisal Burners. On a slow pitch, Omara showed his true class, working for his century, as he hit 119* off 133, one of his slower centuries but a magnificent one nevertheless. He will surely be in contention with the NAT squad for the upcoming T20 tour, despite having only made 121 runs in that format this season, although having only been dismissed twice, his average of 60 does him no harm, especially with a strike rate close to 150. But with already over 500 One Day runs this season, he is well on track to make 1000 runs for the year. Delaney is also in the mix to join the Canadian squad for the T20 tour in two weeks time, but has yet to make a huge impression for Hedger's Team this season, yet to score a century, despite 7 tons already from other batsmen, although with 3 half centuries, a high score of 98 and 320 runs @ 45.71, he does have a case for selection. Although there was a chance both batsmen would join the Canadian squad for the T20 friendly against Australia tomorrow, it seems like Canada will be going in with a full strength squad, and only look to the younger players for the actual tour.
