Match Overview

After winning the toss, we elected to bat and Pettinger and Murch got us off to a decent start before Pettinger was dismissed for 17 and we were 26/1. Mjinke soon followed for 6 and we were in a bit of trouble. Murch struggled along and O'Leary found it tough as well and all seemed lost when O'Leary got himself out for 12. Murch went chasing a wide one and ended up costing him his wicket as first slip took a comfortable catch and Murch was out for 34. Mol soon followed for 17 and at 95/5, we were in a lot of trouble. Kino then made a double strike to dismiss Oldroyd and Whiteman to take his 4th wicket. Moxly and Watkin guided us to a decent total with a 67 run partnership before Watkin got out for 24. Phillips and Baldry quickly followed him though while Moxly finished 30* as we ended up with a total of 180.

It was going to be tough defending that low total on a flat pitch, but Phillips got us off to a good start with two wickets in his opening 5 over spell. Baldry then struck in his first over, to have them three down. There was not much to cheer about though after that as Kularatne and Alpha took the game away from us with a decent amount of runs. Moxly managed to get Kularatne out for 37 but Sarwan just helped Alpha on his way to get them an easy 6 wicket win with still over 20 overs remaining.

Result: THE UNDERDOGZ won by 6 wickets
Toss: Hedger's Team won the toss and elected to bat.

Match Overview

I wasn't in charge of this one and didn't have much say in the lineup but as the One Day tour came closer, we still had decisions to make, especially in the all-rounder department. Elijzen and Sneeboer were the main players fighting for one position but Dees would also need to fight hard for his spot.

We lost the toss and were sent into bat on a slow pitch but the batsman fought hard, as all the top order made runs. Dees made an important 29 off 49 ball knock while Kos played a lot quicker with 21 at a run a ball. Fangman, Bal and Balk all made decent starts with 39, 31 and 27 respectively. JP would have been annoyed though when he ran himself out first ball, but it was Elijzen who lit the stadium up with a fantastic cameo of 61 off 57 balls to give the Netherlands a defendable total of 236.

We got off to a great start with the ball though as Verhoeven took 2 wickets in the opening 10 overs to keep the Netherlands on top. Musch then went for 33, when Sneeboer got through his defences but the skipper, McKenzie fought back hard with a great half century, while he got some support from Jenner with 28 and Ryan with 14 but it was all over when Verhoeven made the big blow with that crucial wicket, and went on to take another 2 as Australia finished 192 all out, Verhoeven with career best U19 OD Friendly figures of 5/26, and is still yet to make his competitive NAT U19 debut. Sneeboer also proved a case for himself with an economical 2/20 from 6.2 overs, although he took the last wicket, while Elijzen showed he should be in the squad, backing up from that crucial 61 with 1/40 from his 10 overs, a tight economical spell, and probably deserved to take Man Of The Match but Verhoeven stole it.

Result: Netherlands U19 won by 44 runs
Toss: Australia U19 won the toss and elected to bowl.
Man of the match: Ruben Verhoeven (3 points), Rolf Elijzen (2), Albert McKenzie (1)

Match Overview

After being busy over the weekend, I told my assistant to go with my default lineup against the Baggy Blues in a One Day Friendly. We were put into bat and Murch and Pettinger fired with 22 runs in the first 2 overs, but Pettinger fell, coming charging down the wicket to the spinner Goddard who was opening the bowling and Ali did the rest. Their decision to go with 4 spinners was a strange one, even on a dry pitch and after getting a move on, Mjinke got out for 22. That was it though as O'Leary smashed his way to a hundred while Murch made an important 90, and Mol chipped in at the end with 35* off 26 balls as we made 299/6 off our 50 overs.

We didn't get off to a great start with the ball though as their openers took 59 runs off the first 10 overs without the loss of a wicket. They continued on around that 6 run an over mark and as it seemed Baldry and Whiteman were going wicketless in their next spells, Whiteman struck in the 20th over to have them 112/1 after 20. Ali and Mohammad got stuck into Moxly though smashing 34 runs off his first 3 overs. Whiteman struck again though as Mohammad got out for 24. They were 180/2 after 30 overs and it seemed like they'd get over the line from there, but Watkin came back on and got the huge wicket of Ali for 82, only conceding 1 run off the over as well. Watkin finished off strongly, finishing with 2/39, while Moxly's horrid spell came to an end as he finished up with dreadful figures of 0/72. It now looked out of reach for Baggy Blues with 74 needed off the final 10, and Phillips and Baldry finished things off, taking the final 6 wickets, Phillips taking 3/54 and Baldry 2/62 as we bowled them out for 270, winning by 29 runs. A good win in a nice closely contested match.

Result: Hedger's Team won by 29 runs
Toss: Baggy Blues won the toss and elected to bowl.
Man of the match: Aidan O'Leary (3 points), Caleb Ali (2), Joseph Murch (1)

Netherlands U19 Squad for One Day Tour

After the friendly on the weekend, we needed to make a few decisions regarding the squad. We had our squad pretty much decided beforehand and not much changed after the match. Elijzen edged out Sneeboer to get into the 18 man squad, while Dees was not selected, fielding the issue and with a few players with low fielding already being selected, we went with Kos, who had slightly better fielding. Verhoeven didn't get a spot, despite his 5 wicket haul against Australia, and other than that, our squad was pretty predictable. Here was the full 18 man squad for the tour, starting next week.

Batsman:

Adriaan Aduard
Joeri Bal
Dennis Bergkamp
Mo Buurman
Jean-Phillip Engelbert
Frederik Fangman
Bas Kos

Wicket Keepers:

Dani?l Abendanon
Marco Broers

All-Rounders:

Rolf Elijzen
Cedric Halbertsma
Frederik Korthals
Stephan Thiessens

Bowlers:

Jan Cohen
Ruben Kouters
Laurens Ligthart
Rik Oosting
Louis Texel

There are a few players to watch out for in this series. Frederik Fangman has played 3 competitive matches this season with a top score of 92 with 141 runs @ 70.5 and has shown some great talent in his friendly matches, in 11 career matches scoring 398 runs @ 36.18. He will be looking for another good series and hope to retain the title for the Netherlands. Dennis Bergkamp is also another one to look out for, and although is really yet to show his talents at NAT level, although has 3 fifties in 7 friendlies, this could be his series. Stephan Thiessens showed his talents in the T20 tour a few weeks ago, with 6 wickets @ 15.83. He's also taken 14 wickets @ 20.64 in 8 U19 OD Friendly matches. He's also handy with the bat and could save a few games with his great all-round abilities.

Laurens Ligthart is also one to look out for, and although he hasn't made much impact on the big stage, he has improved immensely and this series could be his own, although his pace is a bit of a let down, with speeds around 115 kph, up to 125 kph. Rik Oosting may only be 18 but he has shown he has immense talent, with 7 wickets in 3 competitive OD matches with an average of 9.29. Along with Thiessens, he led the wicket taking list in the last T20 tour with 6 wickets as well and is definately the one to look out for this tournament. He bowls a good pace but his line and length are very good and could definately prove difficult for the opposing batsman.

Match Overview

Our T20 match was against the last place team so I decided to play a weaker lineup, with Young coming in to skipper the side, Crane and van der Hoeven coming in, and Lansing would make his debut, after being the team's newest recruit the previous day and quickly slotted into the team to play in today's match despite only being 16 years old but he would be a real gun player.

We lost the toss and were sent into bat but the decision immediately backfired as Murch and Mol smashed 15 runs off the first over. Mol got himself out in the next over, as he came down the wicket only for the ball to fly up off the bat out to long on where Corneille took the catch. Young continued things on though hitting 13 off his first 4 balls, and Young and Murch did not look back, hammering the runs with ease before Young was finally dismissed for 77 off 35 balls. O'Leary got off to a bright start, while Murch brought up his century, his 5th of his career in T20 cricket. O'Leary then got out for 26 off 12 and Crane soon followed, only scoring 6. Murch was unfortunately run out for 110 off 56 balls but van der Hoeven and Yousif finished the innings off well with 26* off 11 and 11* off 3 balls respectively as we finished with a huge total of 266/5.

Watkin opening the bowling took 2 wickets in his opening spell while Lansing didn't have the greatest of starts conceding 17 runs in his opening two. Whiteman and Yousif then took control of the middle overs with two wickets a piece, before Lansing came back on and took his first career wicket, to finish with 1/28 from his 4 overs before Watkin took another 2 wickets to finish with 4/9 off 3 overs before Fitzgerald took the final wicket as we bowled them out for 86, winning by 180 runs, a huge margin. Our youth match tomorrow should be another huge win so there will be a few changes for tomorrows match.

Result: Hedger's Team won by 180 runs
Toss: awesomenators won the toss and elected to bowl.
Man of the match: Joseph Murch (3 points), Norval Watkin (2), Michael Young (1)

Match Overview

We won the toss and elected to bat but Crane got out in the second over, trapped in front by Taylor. Salah and Young continued onwards before Salah was next to go, out for 31 off 22. Omara joined the skipper at the crease and put on a brilliant partnership to put them on top, before Omara was dismissed for 100 off 77, his second youth century. Young had already scored his century, now his 4th of his career, and went on to make his highest career score of 152. Yousif came in and smashed 14 runs off his first 3 balls, before Mol was dismissed for 21 off 15, and Yousif finished 21* off 6 as we finished our innings 334/5.

We came out to bowl and Bollinger put in a good first spell with 2/14 from his 4 overs, while Healy also took 1/7 from his 4. Bol and Yousif took a wicket in the next 16 overs to go with a run out before Bollinger came back on to take another 2 wickets, to finish with 4/30 off his full 8 overs. Healy then came on taking the 9th wicket before Bol finished things off by running Subudhi out for 33, as we bowled them out for 127, winning by 207 runs.

Match Overview

It was Norval Watkin's final match at the club, signing at WolfPack for $257,000 that day. A farewell match was arranged against New York Yankees. After winning the toss, we batted first but Pettinger was out for a golden duck in the first over. Murch and Young played off the openers though, also helped by them opening the bowling with a spinner. Murch got out for 27 during Clark's first over and O'Leary followed a little later with a run a ball 19. Mol then went for a duck and we were in trouble at 77/4. It went from bad to worse though as Young got out for 33. Oldroyd led the fight back though, while getting support from Moxly with 16 and had a good partnership with Bollinger before Oldroyd fell for 45. Bollinger and Phillips then added another 10 runs before Bollinger was dismissed for 15, Thomson the pick of the bowlers with 3/30 as we made 166.

Things started well for us with the ball as Phillips struck in his first over before Watkin made sure he would't go wicketless in his final match as he clean bowled Kris Caterer. The opposition were heavily relying on their #4, Anton Dec and he couldn't do much when Bollinger got through him for only 9. Carr then followed, playing all around a turning ball from Whiteman. Moxly and Whiteman then took control of the middle overs as New York Yankees tried to revive their innings, Moxly finishing his 5 over spell with a beautiful outswinger getting Ranjan's edge and he had 1/12 off his 5 while Whiteman finished his spell with the wicket of Thomson and had nice figures of 2/38 from his 10 as they were now at 109/6. Their batsman fought back though to face off the deadly fast bowling of Norval Watkin who finished his 10 over spell with economical figures of 1/28 while Moxly's second five over spell was much more expensive, finishing with 1/35 and they were now right back in it at 145/6. Bollinger showed he was one with huge talent and showed it again as he struck first over back in the attack with the wicket of Screech Powers. That sparked the collapse as Phillips and Bollinger took another wicket each in the next 2 overs and now had fallen to 147/9. Mishra and Krishnamma fought hard though and had put on a 13 run partnership before Oldroyd put down Mishra off the bowling of Bollinger. It seemed like it was going to be a real nailbiter with 5 runs to win but a huge mixup cost the opposition as Krishnamma was run out after an excellent bit of keeping from Oldroyd and we had bowled them out for 161, Bollinger finishing with 3/27 as we won by 5 runs.

So Watkin says farewell after only 28 One Day matches and 22 T20 matches but has made an impact, especially in T20 with 50 wickets @ 7.82 while averaging a wicket a game for the 50 over format. A great player and he will be sorely missed.

Result: Hedger's Team won by 5 runs
Toss: Hedger's Team won the toss and elected to bat.
Man of the match: Stephen Connor (3 points), Chris Thomson (2), Murray Oldroyd (1)

Match Overview

It was a tough time leading up to the first match of this One Day tour and we had to think about the World Cup later in the season. Fangman's horrid form meant he was left out while we decided to go for a pretty defensive lineup on the hard pitch. We went for the 4 fast and fast medium bowlers plus spinning all-rounder, Thiessens. We were sent into bat first and Buurman and Aduard got off to a good start with a 73 run opening partnership but both lost their wickets around that time, Buurman with 30 while Aduard made 46. JP soon followed, out for 4 before Bergkamp and Abendanon took control of the match in a great partnership, and Bergkamp seemed to have his first International U19 century but unluckily fell 20 runs short, bowled by Bubb for 80. I had argued for Bal's batting position and said he should have been above Abendanon and he showed that he should have had that position as he hammered 72 not out off only 38 balls while Abendanon made 75 and Thiessens added a few extra runs at the end to put our total at 330/6.

It was always going to be an uphill battle for England chasing that huge total and Kouters struck early with the wicket of McLean. Sullivan and Tholar built a decent partnership but a double blow from Cohen had them right on the back foot, taking the wickets of the settled batsman. Wickets fell at regular intervals from then on for England as Korthals took 3 crucial wickets to finish with figures of 3/49 before Cohen came back on at the end and helped himself to the final 3 wickets to complete his 5 wicket haul with figures of 5/37 as we bowled them out for 236 to go top of the ladder after one game with that huge 94 run win.

Result: Netherlands U19 won by 94 runs
Toss: England U19 won the toss and elected to bowl.
Man of the match: Jan Cohen (3 points), Joeri Bal (2), Dani?l Abendanon (1)

Match Comments:

It was a great all-round display. Fantastic batting from all the batsman, noone really letting us down apart from Engelbert and the bowlers were always going to get attacked defending that huge total but kept their cool and Cohen and Korthals ripped through them with 8 wickets between them while everyone had an economy of under 6 runs per over. Excellent performance to start off the tournament.

Does that guy really have a question mark in his name?
