Future is in T20 leagues - Modi

This thread brings me some flashbacks with those usernames. Howsie for instance is still going strong on cricketweb (assuming it’s the same guy).

Unbelievable that since Modi‘s IPL we’ve had no other league come close to to this level of success and the IPL itself has IMO stagnated after his departure, preferring to coast on it’s success slowly with the same principles rather than innovate and make it more mainstream comparable to other sports.

If Modi were in the IPL today, you would have seen the league expand to at least 14-16 teams by now. The man had a vision and was unfortunately sidelined by the BCCI.

I also found the idea of a Champions League very exciting. Sad, they shelved it later on. Once Modi was kicked out, the Srinivasan led BCCI tried to get as many as 5 teams into the CL T20- That, I believe was the stagnation point for many, including me. I do hope, we see some format of the CLT20 in the near future. It was an exciting tournament with some great match ups around the world. Perhaps, the ICC could take up the initiative and do what FIFA does with its Club World Cups.

We will have a CL T20 in the future as soon as the Indian owners buy all the international league franchises.

The hysteria!

This is becoming more and more possible each day. The franchisees have their parent names all across- For. e.g. MI, MI New York, MI Emirates, MI Cape Town & Oval Invincibles. Barring the PSL, the Indian ownership of leagues has taken centerstage. The next big market for cricket would be China. Once, the franchisees get there, the ICC will have to ensure proper management of the said format.

I'd say set aside 3 months in the year and allow for franchisees to run during that time period. Demarcating proper time periods for international cricket is essential to the growth of the game- now with cricket being a part of the Olympics also.

The other concern for me being that some boards have asked the ICC to recognize the T10 format as well. As long as the game is quick, I see no reason why they cannot. In reality, a T20 game now goes on for almost 5 hours- the original T20 games were due to finish in 3 hours and in the early 2000s the format was managed in a better manner. I still remember the 1st T20 World Cup had both semi finals on the same day- akin to what used to happen in the English leagues.

20 years down the line, we will see the leagues running all year long while the international matches will be limited to friendlies and ICC tournaments only. Just like football.

Ofcourse this will happen when IPL based owners will own all the franchises accross all the global leagues. Then we will part away from individual actions/drafts for each league and move towards a single draft/auction or even direct signings and transfer based system. Again, just like Football.

I foresee this happening sooner. I envision the same teams playing everywhere.

I mentioned the many MI outfits above- the day the BCCI bends, you will see MI- led by Pandya playing in New York against any opponent. Consolidation of leagues will eventually happen in the near future.

I think you are misinterpreting BCCI's role here.

BCCI won't bend. BCCI itself will drive this idea forward taking and making itself the unofficial global powerhouse of world leagues. Becoming even more powerful than ICC.
