General Cricket Discussion

I may be in a minority but I really don't think Night tests will help push the popularity. I am still all for it being tried and if it helps then great. I fail to see why ppl who are turning up for matches, will suddenly start turning up for tests, simply because they now extend into the evenings and night. Sure there may be some increase especially in the post-office enthusiasts but thats about all, I feel.

Still try it by all means, and if it helps then great.
People who leave work at 5.30 or 6.00 will be able to get to the game for the last session or so. But in England we sell plenty of tickets for Tests anyway. It also doesn't get dark until 9.30 at this time of year so the lights might not even take effect.

Headingley hasn't looked that filled over the last few days, could be mistaken for a championship match at times! Seem to remember there was poor attendance there last year as well?

I can see the appeal of day/night Test matches, but in countries such as the West Indies or South Africa rather than somewhere like here because we simply don't need them.
I can see them becoming the norm in Australia - the test matches in Perth that have the final session in prime time on the east coast get really strong TV ratings, so having day/night tests would let Nine get that same benefit with all matches.

It has the side benefit of pushing it into a better time for audiences outside Australia, so I can see the broadcasters really pushing it to happen. Unless there's a huge fan backlash, there's too much going for it otherwise.

They sold very well for the first three days, there was a spike in demand after we won at Lord's. The forecast was terrible though for Sunday so people might have decided to stay away, and the weather turned out to be cold but dry. Yesterday and today are both work/school days so a smaller crowd is inevitable.

Look at Lord's, which always sells well anyway, but for day 5 it was a Bank Holiday Monday and the ground was packed.

The weather was miserable; blowing a gale, below 10 degrees and a high chance of rain. I love cricket; but I would have looked at the forecast and the match situation and thought "maybe next year"

I really think Chris Gayle is enjoying his time at Somerset.

The less said about Trego's trousers, the better. :D

Found this vid on youtube, and seriously hats off to SRT.

Dont remember him ever saying a bad word to anyone ever in the 20 years he played, and was always a gentleman. Something far more important than all the runs he scored, or the 100s he made or the man of the match awards he won.

Dravid, Laxman, Dhoni, Sehwag...etc would have reacted the same way as SRT did. This is Indian cricket - true gentlemen of cricket but with hunger to win.
Sorry to say, today the Kohli's are spoiling the old image of Indian cricket. (They may become one of the greats of cricket, but can never become the Gentlemen playing in the spirit of game)

@Markkkkk Who is that guy in the picture.

I was also wondering where your Sachin Tendulkar boner comes from. Is it from when he made your SA attack look ridiculous and flayed your "world class" bowling around to reach the first ever score of 200 in ODIs? Or does it come from the fact that in the 2003 WC hosted by SA, SA tripped over themselves to do an early choke, and exit in the first round, while Tendulkar then went on to have a great tournament and finish as the top scorer and the player of the tournament. Most Pakistani guys get their Tendulkar boner from his 98 he scored against them in the same tournament, in the process making the attack of Akram, Waqar and Shoaib looking like clowns, so if your boner for him comes from the same tournament it would kinda make sense at some level. Or is it a more general boner?

Is it because Sachin has consistently scored runs at WCs (being the highest ever run scorer ever in WCs), while your SA team, supposedly full of better batsmen than SRT turns up and then chokes and ends up as failures. SRT has won a world cup, while SA, again supposedly full of better batsmen than Sachin has won let me see - Zero, thats right NADA !! Forget winning, you guys barely get to any Knock Out stages in WCs, this latest one clearly being an exception. Alright, lets make it easy forget winning, how many WC finals has SA played in ... NADA again. So do you hate SRT because your team supposedly full of Better Batsmen than SRT, has never even reached a WC final let alone winning it, while Sachin has played in two.

Or perhaps I am wrong in taking this approach, perhaps good batsmen to you are those who fail to score any runs at all. So its no wonder then that the guy who has scored more runs that anyone ever in the history of the game, with more 100s than anyone else in the history of the game, with an average of over 50 in both home and away tests, would naturally seem not that impressive to you.

Which is it, I really want to know.
