General Cricket Discussion

Plus there is a whole range of the guy cutting up stuff to see whats inside. I am telling you, that kid is going to grow up to be Dexter.

This world gets weirder by the minute

They've announced dates and places in that silly Warne/Tendulkar legends thing that was mentioned in some thread here

They're trying to play Cricket in November in Chicago and New York. I probably don't need to give precise details saying how bloody stupid that is: but I'll say three things: World Series, NFL and snow.

Like lol its almost too cold to play Baseball at Wrigley Field by November, I don't want to consider how miserable it would be watching a cricket game between a bunch of old men in an empty stadium. I would laugh if we end up with a Cubs/Yankees world series in the year that it happens (the Cubs will get there in the next few years because they have loads of very good young players and the Yankees will probably buy a load of folk like they always do) because it would totally bugger up their plans

A masters-style thing might be cool if done right: but it'll do nothing to grow the game in America: especially not playing it in the middle of Winter against the NFL, the World Series and the start of the NBA and NHL - it'd be like trying to play a game of Baseball at Lords with Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera in February: no one would care if they did it at the height of summer with no real competition, but doing it against the Premier League and the Six Nations would be incredibly stupid. They need a proper grassroots level system that brings in locals based around what has worked with other sports in the past to do that and not a load of competitions featuring old men that are no-names in America - look at Rugby Union as an example.

They arent attempting to attract Americans rather the large subcontinental diaspora residing there.

even if that was the case (which it is in reality but they use lots of rhetoric about using it to try and grow the game) the fact that playing a cricket competition outside at Wrigley Field and Yankee Stadium in November is very, very stupid. Average daytime temperatures of 5 degrees and it averages below freezing at night with relatively high risk of snow, never mind rain...

Do you have any link to the fixtures that they have announced? I mean you can't tell me that they don't have some local guy who tells them how stupid they are if they want to play in New York in November, December.

New York Month Weather - AccuWeather Forecast for NY 10007
Last year's november temperatures. Looks reasonable enough to pull off one game of T20

Chicago is relatively cooler, but still doable. Chicago Month Weather - AccuWeather Forecast for IL 60608

And I remember reading that these games are a kick off for other exhibition games they will be holding at school level in the US. And then expanding to other countries like Canada, Malaysia, etc.

And LOL @ no one wants to watch a bunch of old people playing in empty stadiums. You clearly underestimate the expats from Indian subcontinent and their passion for cricket. If this game happens, I will fight tooth and nail to get the tickets and do the 6-7 hour drive down to NY

BCCI president Dalmiya dies in hospital | Cricket | ESPN Cricinfo

Well that was unexpected, from what I heard a couple of days back, he was out of danger. RIP

Although he played a key role in India's rise as the financial power in world cricket today starting with getting the 1987 world cup to IND/PAK - I don't think he envisioned BCCI becoming the sleazy monster it became under the leaderships Srinivasam and Pawar at the start of the 2000s era.

One of the sports most influential administrators no doubt. Hopefully BCCI finds someone of similar ilk to replace him, since its obvious a great power struggle will start now.

The thing is we don't have anyone right now who is clean enough in terms of corruption in the system to replace him. As the article mentions, Anurag Thakur is likely to replace him temporarily. However the long term options are Sharad Pawar and N. Srinivasan who are both corrupt so it will be interesting to see who they bring in for long term.

Just two things, I don;t think the idea of a veterans league is silly. I would not mind seeing a bunch of recently retired cricketers (for the most part), play in a league.

Empty stadiums, with Tendulkar involved and playing, there is no way there are going to be empty stadiums. Not with how many Indian expats live in the US.

As for the World Series and NFL, I doubt this cricket league is competing with those sports per se. I doubt the Indian (and Pakistani) expats who will throng to this league (lots of Pakistanis also involved), are crazy about American Sports to be honest.

Snow I am obviously no expert on that, but I would think the organisers would take that into account.

Yeah I can see that but what about the youngsters growing up in the American environment? I mean this kids going to school aint playing cricket, do they really have an interest in cricket or would just the old boys go see the games.

Frank "The Typhoon" Tyson is no more. Probably the fastest bowler to ever play Tests for England from what I've read. Amazing bowling average of 18.56 from just 17 Tests. Looks like his career was also plagued by countless injuries like Shane Bond's.
