Who crippled the resources first though?
No doubt he was one of the best tactical minds but people forget individual brilliance when he was around and everything was contributed to him. Like the recent
Politics and Cricket both are waters of different oceans. I do not have any idea of what the political situation of India is but I have followed a decade of Cricket and very closely followed Indian Cricket so I know what that man has done. Also I always appreciated the individual brilliance be it Zak's 2011 WC Final spell or Gambhir's knock in that particular match or maybe we can talk about Dhawan's 2013 CT performance or Jadeja's bowling in the same tournament.
I remember once I was absolutely critical of why Dhoni didn't give the strike in the penultimate over to his partner Ambati Rayudu in a T20 game at Edgbaston back in 2014 which we could've easily won. But that again was a rare case.
I have always said that Dhoni had the best mind in Cricket but I also accept that fact that he was slightly off when it came to red ball Cricket.
Well we can compare that with India in Kohli era. I was a huge fan of Kohli the Captain I guess around 2017-19. And I always thought that he is the guy who would take India forward with his aggressive approach. But as time passed I noticed that in India Cricket team we are literally playing musical chairs where no one is sure about their roles and few of the spots are wasted unnecessarily. And come the major tournament in a knockout game those uncertainty of spots have came up where they have failed to deliver in crunch moments. And he would always come up with a reason, the opposition were better against us that day. Ok I agree that could be an issue but what has he done to resolve those issues? Does he ever talk about it? What he does is just he keeps boasting that we have the best team in the world which we are still far from achieving. While the former actually addressed the issues and tried to work on those flaws everytime we come up with similar situations.
Dhoni's decision making under crunch situations was second to none. He actually knows to win matches when the odds are completely against it. A Captain like Eoin Morgan never really got challenged much. He is probably England's best white ball Captain but even he commits some blunders in moments when it mattered at times which was not the case with Dhoni.
I would say Ponting was very much par with Dhoni, but infact he was better in building the core of the team and the fact that he always made his side believe that they only did one thing- dominate the opposition. And now you could see where he stands today.
