General Cricket Discussion

Greetings all:

I have a Laws of Cricket inquiry. I am new to the game (1 year), but a lifelong baseball fan. Cricket is awesome.

If the batsman makes contact with the ball after a legal delivery, NOT making a full swing, and the ball is then caught by wicket keeper without touching the ground, is the batsman dismissed?

I made this account to ask this question because in the West Indies / Scotland Super Six recently the above scenario happened in the first over and the batsman was not dismissed.

Thank you.

As far as I know the ball has to make contact with the batsmen's bat or glove for it to count as a dismissal. Otherwise touching any other body part won't count as a dismissal.

So you mean how like checking your swing in baseball isn't considered a strike?

If the ball hits the bat or gloves in cricket (from a legal delivery) and is caught without touching the ground, it's out. Swing isn't relevant.

Well...

If you don't swing the bat on an lbw... If you don't swing the bat on a byes... If the ball hits the globe with/without the hand on the bat...

Whats up with Bangladesh?

Losing 2 home games back to back vs Afghanistan, they had nearly perfect record at hime since 2015 winning almost everything.

If the Afghanis had one more good batter I’d reckon they would be dark horses for the tournament.

Many thanks to all who responded. I will be here asking questions as I learn the intricacies of the rules of this beautiful sport, especially the ICC World Cup Qualifying matches which I am watching on replay.

I guess the ball changed directions because of spin. To me it appeared the bat made contact, but I guess it did not since there was not a wicket taken. Also, there was not the usual sound from the bat making contact, so I guess that solves it. For reference, this is the first bowl in the first over in the morning session.

Cheers.

If by morning session you mean the West Indies' inning, this is the commentary on ESPN and Cricbuzz

Code:
Full ball angles in towards off before landing around fourth stump and straightening. It beats the cover drive attempted by King, whose foot movement was little to nil
Code:
two slips in place and a beautiful outswinger from Chris Sole first up. Full and moving away outside off, Brandon King gets forward to drive and is lucky not to edge it behind

Definitely looks like you were deceived by the swing, into thinking it was an edge

I like Ibrahim Zadran he is like that Kane Williamson type of batter in the Afghanistan lineup.

Yep, it was clear back in the last Asia Cup to me that the way he played would set himself up perfectly in ODIs. Him and Gurbaz together can form a similar dynamic like Pakistan’s opening duo of Fakhar and Imam.

The issue is with what comes after the opening duo. Rahmat offers consistency but struggles to play aggressively, Shahidi has some technical proficiency but it feels like he is our generation’s Habibul Bashar who is somehow slower, Najibullah is a great hitter in T20s but is too inconsistent with his hitting in ODIs and Nabi is arguably batting a spot too high at six. A lot of their batting can be described as ‘they don’t score as quick as the average batter in the same position and they aren’t consistent with runs either’.

If they had one more player akin to Ibrahim to bat at three or four they would suddenly look a lot stronger as both of the traditional subcontinental giants have shown… you can get away with a strong top three in a lot of games. They do have Rasooli and Bahir in the reserves but given that their selection policy has been very political to say the least I wonder when they’ll get a proper run in the side.

New Zealand have renewed Gary Stead’s contract for two more years. Nicholls must be over the moon.

@icyman says Bangladesh should be banned from playing cricket, Bangladesh brilliantly wins a test match against New Zealand in New Zealand.
@icyman predicts Bangladesh as one of the world cup semi-finalists, Bangladesh lose miserably against Afghanistan in an ODI series in their own home ground.

I feel like I'm sensing a pattern here :p

I also predicted India won't reach the Final 4 in CWC 2023....:grinning:

TIL that Sunil Gavaskar opened the bowling for India on 5 occasions.
