General Cricket Discussion

Good debate with @wasteyouryouth and @Bevab so far. But I honestly feel it's time to let another idea fester in this chat. Lemme back down for the time being over the WI. Let's see what the ICC does and whether the WICB can salvage some pride.

Notice how Ireland doesn't get any of the ire despite having arguably similar or worse results in recent times because there is no weight of expectations on them.

Ha ha, got a pretty much soft corner for them!

It was South Africa's choice to give SA20 preference for their centrally contracted players. There's is already an international window, it's the 10 months when the IPL window isn't being played.

I think we’ll start seeing more and more of such policies in other nations if there already isn’t one. The international window comment was more in relation to the ICC having a standardised calendar with the T20 carousels not conflicting as much as possible.

Since this didn’t generate any discussion on the server and we all need a new topic…

Is it high time for specific international windows to be introduced?
I belive the FTP dates can be moved around a bit. not sure what the hassle is here, given that the NZC is required to make minor edits.

To your point on international windows-Agree! but with each nation putting forth their T20 leagues, it might be challenging.

Can't really see it how it would work. India already has its IPL window ( which is 2 months and probably not far off being 3) and for the most part England and Australia play has crossover between T20 and international. So, you have less influential boards that would want a T20 window for themselves - cause that's what it'd be. I think boards would care more about their leagues clashing with others. South Africa's problem is they don't have room for the tournament that came long after they agreed to tours.

I don't envy the situation that has led to them essentially selling a month of their summer to Indian billionaires but that's what they chose to do. The frustrating thing about bilateral cricket is touring sides have no penalty for pulling out, which they could do, then New Zealand are left with having spent all the time and money arranging something and having to fill that gap.

Most countries have had to rearrange their schedule around other things already so this sort of thing will just work itself out in time. It's a flaw of bilateral cricket.

We may well see a future where such crossovers are less likely even in England. Australia is quite unlikely given how sacred their test summer tends to be but I can see a world where their test side becomes a separate entity with FC specialists and their other format stars only get called up or play against the bigger boys while there are no other international white ball games for them. The lack of a penalty is what I believe will force the ICC into action here soon as this would be the second time South Africa gets implicated in such a problem. Other boards may not be forced into a forfeit or sending an entire XI of unpicked players but they may have to compromise on certain players being unavailable for tours in the future when those blokes prefer participating in leagues instead. So far it hasn't happened with the likes of Hasaranga and Fizz being denied NOCs by their boards but once these investors realise that the issue is them not throwing enough money at them it may well change.

When you do have separate windows for each league wherein only certain teams play international cricket and others don't then it may help with these clashes. We already had a similar 'mutual' understanding of sorts unofficially with the PCB allowing it's players to participate in the SA20 in exchange for CSA doing the same with their players in the PSL.

There's no crossover this year with internationals and The Hundred but they've said that is unlikely to happen again. We shall see. It makes sense somewhat with it being an Ashes year, most people aren't going to be paying attention to The Hundred with this series going on. I don't know if West Indies and Sri Lanka will captivate cricket audiences so much this year.

Could see the mutual agreements between boards, at least for central contract players or you will see more players like Boult and Roy who give them up in favour of the franchise money. Essentially that's the case with the IPL, if not formally then boards know they can't prevent players.

Pakistan is up 352 in the final - exciting to see how India chases this.
