So, they are above the game? Early 2000s, agreed the 3rd format wasn't there then, but SRT, VVS ,Dravid, etc used to turn out for their states. By the way, playing a Ranji doesn't mean the player needs to play all 5 days. In the past, BCCI has pulled out players from on-going Ranji games for national duty. Turning out for a match or 2 isn't a big ask.
Furthermore, domestic calendars can be adjusted to ensure these guys play. I still remember, the Challenger Trophy used to be a big draw. The likes of Rohit, etc, can benefit from a few hours of domestic batting to get into the groove before a major torunament. Now, if you factor in pitches, ofcourse, the argument gets nullified. However, getting into the zone is what matters.
Not what I meant.
You do have more games being played now. I’ve picked two arbitrary six year periods in 2000-2005 and 2014-2019. Comparing Dravid and Kohli in these time periods (the Indians with most number of international games in this period), Kohli has thirty seven more games of total cricket played. Rohit has Ganguly beat by sixteen games in the same timeframe.
Further looking at when India have played cricket since 2018… their calendar is packed with games in the September to February portion when most domestic games are played. When do you schedule the domestic games other than in this period then? This is what I mean by them being able to participate in domestic games only if they’re missing games for India because India plays a lot more international cricket compared to most countries out there. Besides I’m not sure if rescheduling domestic tournaments for the sake of a couple appearances from one or two big names is a good idea.
