What surprised me though is that Kohli is sitting on just 8.8k runs. For a person like him, seems like a bit of a dampener.

huge regress for Kohli, i don't think he's even been among India's top 3 Test batters since 2021

It is indeed surprising. For a person who has spoken out regarding Test cricket to fall behind. Note that Kohli has played around 115 Test games. I agree Root has played 30 more games, but even then, Virat wouldn't be in a position to be at 12k ,if he played the same Tests as Root.
