I don't suppose you've played with the AI strength and agression sliders? If you have (can't remember if it was GPL or rFactor) there is some .ini file where you change a value to make them faster, something tells me it was GPL, but I can't remember.

Yep, I've messed with the strength etc. Nothing to do with the pace of them, just the way they race.

Agreed, they cant overtake for starters, they'll follow you down the straight backing off even if they are in a much faster car. Then they'll put you in the gravel at the next corner. They dont even overtake if you move offline to let them thru.

Ah yes, I've also felt that in some mods they are more mental than others ie. Intercontinental A Karting mod, it's like you don't exist, they'll happily drive over you or cut across you when you are right next to them. In the Formula BMW mod and the V8 Supercars they aren't that bad.

Problem in GP4 is,you don't get the sense of speed that you do in the EA sports series.

But I have to admit,the AI in GP4 is better.

I may have been influenced by these 2 reviews:

Now,why do I think GP4 is easy?

To put it simply,its the physics engine.Even at high speeds,you have alot of grip on the car,which is so unrealistic.And then I don't have much control over the car.Even after disabling all the driving aids,it still feels like the computer is driving for me!

I hope there are patches on the net to fix the physics...that might get me to play the game

What are you talking about? The sense of speed in GP4 was amazing. Maybe your framerate settings were messed up.

By the way, does anyone know if GC is going to make another Grand Prix game and if not, how would you rate GTR2 on PC? I really need a new racing game! I want one with realistic driving (a simulation), nice crashes/damage modelling, good driver AI (they don't stick to the same lines all the time) and official championships.

i rate GTR2 on PC about 9/10...i love it, its driving is fun, rewarding and challenging, the AI can be extremely difficult to beat if their difficulty is way up, or very easy if you want it to be, the AI makes mistakes (running wide at turns, locking brakes, crashing with each other etc)... the cars looks great and generally the graphics are great if you have a good system, damage modeling could probably be improved but it still looks good nonetheless,

it also has the FIA GT championships able to play and there is hundreds of mods for it,

i can't really fault it if you have a good PC which can run it at full settings, because it looks beautiful, heaps of tracks available online with it too.

i recommend it, a great game

I think in comparsion the the EA Sports games everything feels slow as they are much too arcadey, GP4 was goof, but driving trains got boring after a while.

We definitely won't be seeing another Grand Prix game from him, but its okay, there are better plat forms on the way.

GTR2 would be your best bet if you are after an 'official' championship, otherwise I would suggest rFactor. The possibilities are endless as there are countless mods which can satisfy any of your needs, no 'official' championships though, but you can run your own and record them in an exel sheet or something.

Having played GP4 a bit more of late (given I now have a computer good enough to play it ) it's not as easy as I always thought, but then I have installed the 2006 mod which does come with a different set of physics to the original game. On the AI, I still haven't come across a game that has better AI, the only that I can think of that comes close (my opinion) is Race 07 and as much as it pains me to say it, rFactor's AI is non-existant.

Now GTR 2. Fantastic game, but certainly not without its faults. The AI again could be quite a bit better, with the biggest problem being there inability to pass backmarkers easily. If the AI isn't particularly fast there are a couple of things you can do, such as give the AI your own car setup.

Some of the things I love about it is the amount of editing you can do. So you're not just limited to the FIA GT Championship. There are now prototypes available, thanks Perfect Dark's SCC mod and the JPBS mod, which includes the Audi R10 and Peugeot 908. When the gfx are turned up it looks fantastic. The sunsets, night time racing and sunrises are magnificant and look even better when you get a couple of little tweaks. 24 hour races, and with there being a couple of Le Mans tracks around, this is a wonderful feature.

Thanks for that, screenies would be good, especially if they involve crashes/damage model, as well as the cars duking it out with each other.

Does the AI try to block you when you overtake, or do they stick religiously to the proper racing line and are there car failures? It was so funny in GP4 when you were chasing Schumacher in his Ferrari and then his engine let go!! Also, is there an option in GTR2 to have the PC set your car up? I found that a bit too complicated in GP4.

Finally, how will it fare on my specs?

Blocking the AI isn't great, they certainly try to pass you though.

Car setup is very much down to you, although there are a number online which can be downloaded through the game.

Specs, well I not exactly the most knowledgable when it comes to this stuff but I can run it at maximum settings on 1280x1024 resolution on mine:

1 GB RAM

Nope, Sony has all the licenses until 2010 or something silly, and thats only for console games. The last fully licensed F1 game was F1C, which is why it was a 'bumper' edition. Hopefully when the licensing period ends someone like ISI, SimBin or Blimey! Will hop in and buy the PC licenses.

Ahh, my mistake, I just remember it was a long while ago when they announced it, and lots of people were very unhappy. Needless to say hopefully a good PC developer will come along and buy the PC licenses before Sony goes and gets them again solely for consoles.
