General Racing Games

For that price bracket get a Logitech wheel, they're probably one of the best if not the best, commercial gaming wheels on the market. The one in the link I posted above should do(Not the G25), although there might be cheaper ones still.

Many thanks, friend! That looks like a gorgeous wheel and you can sit it on your lap as well!

I dont think you would be faster with a wheel myself. I find I can be just as fast (if not faster) with my control pad, having said that, I much prefer the wheel as its a better experience. I wouldn't opt for Justin's wheel of choice unless you really like racing games (or are minted) but I wouldn't go for the cheapest either, pedals are a must btw, its just wrong using a wheel without them. You can get wheel and pedal sets for as low as around ?16 from amazon, but I think something a little more expensive would be a better buy . I dont play that much so I opted for the Logitech Formula Force EX, its got force feedback and comes in around the ?45 mark.

I've just reinstalled GP4 and I've tried both that and GTR2 demo with a PS2 pad and you're right, they're far better (and less tiring) than the joystick. Maybe a don't need a wheel after all, but I might still get one because I like the idea of using a wheel for racing games.

I don't know if there are any of you out there still playing GP4, if so can you help me with something? The game keeps either freezing up or CTD. This didn't happen with my old specs, so I'm guessing that it is having issues with the dual core CPU or, more likely, the GPU. I've installed the patch, but no luck. Does anyone know if there is a fix for this, I really want to play GP4, I'd forgotten what a blast it is! GTR2 is a great game, but the cars feel pedestrian compared to F1. I just don't get why someone hasn't released an F1 game, especially with the resurgence in British interest due to Lewis Hamilton. Simbin should nab the licence, I reckon their attempt at an F1 game could top even Geoff Crammond!

Even if you get a wheel just for the immersion of it being done 'properly' it's worth it. I think I remember Stevie had a few problems with GP4 doing much of the same it's doing to you, he might just have the answer.

I think EA is going to get the license again, with Hamilton recently signing to be the face of a new F1 game, I can't see Simbin being able to afford both the F1 license and Hamilton lol.

Of course you could also install some mods to gtr that include faster cars. There is an F1 mod, but the AI doesn't cope with the fragility of the cars, A better bet would be the 2 prototype mods just released.

So there will soon be an F1 mod for GTR2? Will that include tracks/licences/drivers from the 2007 season? And do the modded cars handle like F1, extra grip, more downforce and so on?

I will be getting GTR2 shortly, it's a great game going by the demo and everyone's comments on it and offers something different to F1. But I would like to get my F1 game working properly as well. It's aged excellently, it just doesn't look five years old!

It's a wonderful idea for a game, and I love it. The online play is the best I've experienced. The biggest problem with it (and it's a biggy) is the AI, which to be perfectly honest, is crap.

Have GTR2 as well now, which is my favourite since I found the Peugeot 908 and Audi R10 (pictured below):

:D

Do these cars go faster than the ones in the demo? They look do resemble Indycar/F1 in some aspects. Does the full game come with open cockpit cars similar to F1/Indycar?

@Gold 369: I see what you meant about the sense of speed in GP4. Try lowering your framerates, I had mine set at 60fps and the cars seemed quite slow. Chop it down to 25 or 30fps and then check the sense of speed. It is fantastic!

What's the best Forza 2 style racer on PC ? Preferably something cheap/with a demo ? Whats GTR 2 like ? Is it Forza 2 style ?

Edit: Dont worry. Found out that Test Drive Unlimited is available on PC. I loved that game on 360, it's such a fun game. Will be buying that in the next few days.

No problems with dual core and GP4 here. Have a search on www.grandprixgames.org and then go to the forum. You'll have to sign up though to be able to search the forum. Had more problems with GP3 and GP4 crashing on my old computer for no apparent reason. Not suffered any crashes with the new one.

The prototypes (or LMP's) are significantly faster than the GT cars and are in seperate mods to the game. The LMP's are as close as a sports car will get to F1 cars, plenty of grip, fast acceleration, 200+ mph top speed.

As Kev said, there is a F1 mod for GTR 2, based on the 2007 season, but I've personally steered clear of it.

Do you know of a mod that displays a small graphic so you know just how close you are to another car when going wheel to wheel with someone? After all, in a game you have no peripheral vision, and changing the view to take a peek can result in you crashing into them anyway! What I mean is a small graphic showing the two cars side by side and the distance between them. It would be so cool to be able to safely move over on someone while knowing how far from contact you are.

I didn't mention a specific game, as I believe such a mod would benefit all racing games.

Ah so rfactor and Eurendo Challenge are two different games?

Both of them seem good and yeah I love simulations, is there like a in-depth season mode or anything?
