General Racing Games

I've seen a vid of this game now and the crashes are great, as is the rest of the game (going by the vid and your input). I'll be getting it very shortly.

Edit: One other thing, how is the handling? I haven't got a wheel, I play racers with the joystick. Are there sensitivity scaling options?

There are deadzones and it also allows for sensitivity editing, right from 0-100% if my memory serves me correctly.

@ Justin, Sony no longer hold the licence, it ran out already, hence no 2007 game currently.
I don't wanna know how you did that to an Audi!

PS

That vette looks wonderful, I wonder who painted it ;)

I've just managed to dig out my demo of the game (I knew I had it on a PC Gamer somewhere) but no matter what setting I use, the handling just feels far too twitchy. Have you got the demo, is the handling in the full game better? As I said before, I use a joystick for this sort of game, but would you say you need a wheel to be able to drive the car properly? If so, which wheel would you recommend (I don't want to spend much more than ?25 and it doesn't have to come with foot pedals).

It's annoying, the only racer I've ever played where the handling just feels right, is GP4. I was quite good at that game, I could consistently make fastest laps and actually keep the thing on the road most of the time, but with the GTR 2 demo (and all other racers since GP4), the handling just feels too loose. Does it improve in the full game at all?

Your problem is the joystick, simple. The only reason GP4 felt good, is because GP4 could double as a train sim, as could GP3 and GP2, they were super keyboard friendly a wheel didn't give you a huge advantage in those games.

Now the physics in games are getting closer to more realistic versions so the only way to really go fast is to use a wheel, and perhaps a built car setup. Handling in the full game and demo would be exactly the same, its just the controller you are using thats causing it to feel wrong.

I'd go for that as a starting wheel, although Stevie would probably be able to give better advice in terms of whats available in the UK. I'd reccomend geting a known brand though, it's no good spending ?25 on a wheel thats going to break after a month that you can't get spare parts for.

I personally use this - Probably a little overkill for you eh ;)

I dont think you would be faster with a wheel myself. I find I can be just as fast (if not faster) with my control pad, having said that, I much prefer the wheel as its a better experience. I wouldn't opt for Justin's wheel of choice unless you really like racing games (or are minted) but I wouldn't go for the cheapest either, pedals are a must btw, its just wrong using a wheel without them. You can get wheel and pedal sets for as low as around £16 from amazon, but I think something a little more expensive would be a better buy . I dont play that much so I opted for the Logitech Formula Force EX, its got force feedback and comes in around the £45 mark.

......keyboard FTW

i got a steering wheel i use on my PS2 and stuff.. need to find an adapter of some kind so i can plug it into my PC

:(

If you have a PS2 adapter you can use any PS2 controller with your PC, including a wheel? If so, I've seen a Ferrari one for around ?30.

I'm pretty sure that GAME do a PS2 to PC adapter, failing that, check out www.play.com. That's where I got mine from and after switching to the PS2 pad, I haven't gone back to Logitech etc!

I haven't tried it, but I don't see why not. Pop along to game and get an adapter for a tenner.

I've already got an adapter, now I just need a decent wheel that doesn't cost the Earth!

By the way, can anyone suggest some good sites for GP4 mods?
