The Story So Far
There isn't much that can be said about Adidas All Stars Story so far: abysmal pretty much sums it up. Out of a possible 64 points so far they have managed all of 3 (and all of those came in one game). Only 4 of their batsmen have managed an aggregate of three figures so far and only one bowler has managed more than 9 wickets. They have been heavily dependent on Kevin Pietersen and the other 3 recognised batsmen with an average above 20. They have been hoping that if Kevin Pietersen can continue to keep his run of form going then the rest of the batsmen can click and the team can become efficient and effective. There have been calls for a change of captaincy but really with only Kevin Pietersen firing at the moment, appointing a new captain would be a suicidal move.
Kevin Pietersen has had a lot to think about and has come under harsh scrutiny
The High Point
Easily Round 2 vs Reebok Smashers where finally the rest of the team clicked around Kevin Pietersen and one of the highest scores of the whole tournament was achieved. They were undone by a poor decision to declare from Pietersen and good application from the Reebok batsman however it was the only time in the season they played as a team and showed some true class and touch.
Just as the team started to gel things took a turn for the worse
The Low Point
Following the near success of Round 2, the next game Adidas played was in Round 4 in which they managed little over 200 runs in the match and in the first innings were skittled out for 80. Pietersen failed for the first time in 4 games (including the warm-up) and the rest of the team followed.
Pressure was piled on Pietersen following the destruction of Adidas at the hands of Asics
The Big Gun
Only one contender, the captain, Kevin Pietersen. He is their highest run-scorer and is among the 5 highest run-scorers in the tournament. Without them their team would be lost as they were when he got out for a duck against Asics. Pietersen will be contending for the Golden Bat and the $2,000,000 prize that comes with it. However, things will only get more difficult for him as the pitches become more worn and more helpful for bowlers.
Pietersen had lots of individual success but it couldn't be transferred to the rest of the team
The Big Flop
Too many contenders for this one. Cook, Morgan, Williamson, Petersen, Jadeja, Broad and Vettori are all capable batsmen and all have an average below 20. Brad Hogg hasn't had a game as of yet and in a team that is still searching for the right combination, I can't see why. However if one player has to be chosen, it would have to be Eoin Morgan. He has scored 67 runs in 5 innings, with only a high score of 22. He also has no other skills to fall back on, unlike Jadeja, Vettori and Broad who can at least pick up a few wickets.
Brad Hogg has been forced to keep his bowling to the training sessions
What To Expect
Not much to look forward to for Adidas. They have an outside chance but will need to win all of their remaining fixtures and will need to win well. Even then, all other results will have to go their way. Pietersen can still bag the Golden Bat but that's about the only trophy that might come their way. There is still a possibility of getting 3rd, a respectable outcome given their current position but even 4th would be a great result for a team 18 points from the team ahead of them.
Andy Flower will have to do a lot to unite the team for the remaining matches
