The Story So Far
The only team not to have lost a game so far and deservedly on the top of the current table. Their whole team has worked well together and if one of their key players has failed then another player has stepped up to the mark. They have shown that they can pull miracles out of the bag by forcing a tie against Nike and have shown their absolute domination by bowling out Adidas for 80 (but more on those later). They have scored the most amount of bonus points and despite not having won the most games, Asics have shown how important it is to score bonus points. These have come through huge batting scores supplied by their batsmen (and lower order) and fierce bowling performances. They have had some luck but at most times have always looked to get the full amount of points out of a game, something which other teams will need to learn off.
A possible label for Asics?
The High Point
Really in a season filled with so much success it was hard to choose, but it comes down to 2, which can't be separated as they are different forms of success. In Round 2 vs Nike, the game was seemingly lost but Asics never gave up hope. On the verge of victory, Nike required one more run, but for Ravichandran Ashwin who stole the show leaving the game tied in a result which has left the table a lot more favorable to Asics. This feat showed just how dominating thy have been that even when the game looks lost they can pull a rabbit out of the hat. Their second achievement was bowling Adidas out for 80 (and then 128 in the second innings). It just highlighted how unstoppable Asics have been in any situation thus far
Malinga was influential in both of the teams' best moments. Once with bat and once with the ball
The Low Point
Really too difficult to find any particular moment, possibly leaving the game against Nike until the last run and in a way narrowly missing out on victory, but really a solid season so far.
It's been fun and games so far for Asics
The Big Gun
Despite others giving good performances, Ricky Ponting really has been the stand-out player. Currently the only player to top 500 runs and will have his sights firmly set on the 1000 run mark (and the $500,000 that come with it). He is the no. 1 contender for the golden bat but knows he will have to apply himself even more as pitches begin to wear and become helpful for bowlers. A top score of 289 isn't too shabby either. A definite mention should go to Lasith Malinga: 16 wickets and 98 runs including a tops score of 51* which saved Asics against Nike. Also a mention for Shahid Afridi: 92 runs and 13 wickets.
Ponting has had a lot to celebrate and smile about so far
The Big Flop
Probably has to be either one of the 3 players who haven't played yet: Upul Tharanga, Ed Cowan, Matt Prior Or Jacques Kallis, the only batsman in the top 6 who has scored less than 100 runs. Mind you, he has taken 7 wickets.
Things haven't clicked with the bat for Jacques Kallis, however things could be worse
What To Expect
Lots of excitement. Asics will be keen to hold on to their no. 1 position but it will be tough seeing as on the road to getting there, they had a few close shaves. Nike will be keen to get the victory they think they deserve against Asics, whereas Puma and Asics have locked horns in a deadlock twice already. Both teams will be keen to prove they are superior and will go all out for the victory. Asics are currently the only team Reebok haven't beaten and Reebok will want to set that record straight by demolishing them in the latter half of this competition. However, if anyone has reason for wanting payback, it will be Adidas. They'll not only look to win, but they will want to absolutely destroy Asics for the way they discarded of them in Round 4. It means Asics cannot just rely on an easy walk-over against Adidas and will have to keep on churning out their best cricket. However if their key players keep firing the way they have, Asics have enough talent to pull it off and become the inaugural champions.
Ricky Ponting will be training hard to ensure he can carry his form forward into the second half of the tournament
Would you bet on them to win? It would be a pretty safe bet
