I have put a lot of effort in this

That's the reason it looks overdone, try to kep it simp,le now. Try some simple and effective Wallpaper tutorials available in the Tutorials thread. The Walpaper Tut by AkshayC, Pranav, mattfb, KX are awesome and will make you pro. Please don't add many effects in a single piece of work. Try only to blend the render and a good background with acceptable text. And you should first get the mastery in Avatars 100x100 then signatures and then try hand on wallpapers. Good Luck, hoping you to understand and follow these tips as they were given to me by a great pro when I started GFX. KIU
