Hindi Cinema Discussion

Here's my list of movies. Might be cheesy, but whatever. I enjoy and embrace that Bollywood culture. Plus i'm a big fan of 90s SRK so that is the epitome of cheesiness :) So much so that he deserves his own section!

No particular order:
SRK movies:

1. Darr
2. Baazigar
3. Pardes
4. Yes Boss
5. Dil to Pagal Hai
6. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
---
Those last three, Yes Boss, DTPGH and KKHH probably define my childhood along with watching Tendulkar bat. I must have seen KKHH like 4000 times.
7. Dil Se
8. Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gham
9. SWADES. OMG. One of my favorite movies, especially being an NRI. Makes me cry whenever I see that song :( :(
10. Kal Ho Na Ho
11. Om Shanti Om
12. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

Others:
13. Sholay
14. Mother India
15. Soldier
16. Gadar: Ek Prem Ki Kahani
17. 1947 a love story
18. ZAKHM. YOU GUYS HAVE TO WATCH THIS. Waat a film yaar. Actually the life of the director too. What a great movie.
19. Lagaan
20. 3 Idiots
21. Iqbal
22. Jo Jeeta Wo Sikandar
23. Rangeela
24. Dil Chatha Hai
25. Rang de Basanti
26. Ghajini, just for all the work Aamir put into that movie

Probably loads more. I enjoy Bollywood a lot. :)

Big list, but if you want the bare essentials:
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai for the epitome of 'Bollywood'.
Swades.
Sholay
ZAKHM
Lagaan
Iqbal

Nana Patekar fans here? love all of his movie, such a unique actor! :hpraise

Remake. Official remake.

Surya's acting in the Tamil version trumped all three.

No. Ghajini was not the official remake of Memento. It was just an inspiration (as said by Murugadoss, the director in many interviews). Have not seen Memento, but apparently people say its much more than just an inspiration.

Pretty similar to the movies I like.:) KKHH and DDLJ are the films that I grew up with too, and I dont have a count of how many times I have watched both films. Wish I get a blu-ray player and get the blu-ray versions of these films and continue watching them. Ultimate Bollywood!

Hey guys,

Im looking for Bollywood/Indian English movies made about the Indian involvement in WWII.

Are there any such movies? about the Colonial Army and their battles in Africa?

Also what are some good movies about Partition and Independence from Britain? When I say good movies, I mean historically accurate and without song and dance.

We had a lot of war movies during the Kargil war with Pakistan which iirc was around 99/00. That was the height of stereotypical Bollywood films so there is going to be songs and what not.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero (2005) is good. About one of the freedom fighters (Bose) during independence. I thought the Legend of Baghat Singh (The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002)) was quite awesome as well. If you want a more modern take on things Rang De Basanti is good (its all about flashbacks, comparing India's government today with the British and what not. It's a great movie)

You could go the hollywood route and watch the Gandhi movie.

Dunnow much about our involvement in WWII tho.

But once again, if you want a movie in a similar climate go for Zakhm. It is not about war but about Hindu-Muslim riots in Mumbai. Now that I think about it, it's easily one of the best movies I have ever watched.

Oh crap, you wanted English movies. These are all Hindi but come with subs. I guess you can always go for Gandhi tho.

Indians fought under the British Fourteenth Army, also known as the "Forgotten Army"

A collection of soldiers from the Commonwealth, they mostly fought in Burma.

I haven't watched a movie about it. But the top movies independence wise: Bose and Baghat Singh fo sho.

Ive seen Gandhi a million times, Ben Kingsley is such a genius (helps that he is part Indian too :p)

I'll check some of those outs, one of my teammates suggested "Border", but I have not been able to find it anywhere.

Border is a pretty decent movie as well. IIRC it was based on an IRL story.

EDIT: Also was anyone a little disappointed with OUATM? It wasn't really a bad move but I just expected a little more somehow.

as rohit suggested, "legend of bhagat singh" , "Bose : Forgotten hero" are some decent ones. another one i would suggest is "Hey Ram" by kamal hassan.its not exactly an independence movie...more like assassination of gandhi.

Border is OK. the film starts off and builds up well. the moment of silence just before the war begins is wonderfully taken. but the ending is flingED UP !!
its so cheesy and ridiculous that you cant help but do this......

@ Mark: You might want to watch "Mangal Pandey: The Rising" which is actually about the Sepoy Mutiny and not WWII. Although that's cheesiness and historical inaccurancy to the highest degree. Bollywood isn't exactly known for its historical movies- there has only been a handful. Can watch "Bose: The Forgotten Hero" to get an insight into the life of a man labelled a "fascist" by the British and worshipped as a hero by the contemporary Indians. Other than that and a few others already mentioned by people here, no name springs to my mind.

How about "Gandhi: My Father"? Haven't watched it myself, but heard it to be a good movie.
