Nasser Hussain:Good morning and a very warm welcome to all our viewers! Here we are again at the start of the English summer: The sky's clear, the sun is out and the temperature is rising. Today marks the start of the English domestic season and Sky Sports are here live at Old Trafford to bring you the first game from the Liverpool Victoria County Championship, as Essex take on Lancashire. We'll be here all day to bring you all the live action, and to put forth their expert cricketing opinions here are the men you'll be hearing from today:
SKY SPORTS COMMENTARY TEAM AT OLD TRAFFORD
Geoffrey Boycott.
Ian Ward.
David Lloyd.
David Gower.
Waqar Younis.
Nasser Hussain:This is proving to be a highly-anticipated match as not only does it kick off the domestic season, but over the next few days we'll see a struggle between players of great calibre- Both teams boast international players and thus it'll be fascinating to see how they oppose one another on the field. And speaking of which, David Gower is down at the ground with the pitch report. David, what can you tell us?
PITCH REPORT WITH DAVID GOWER
David Gower:A very good morning to cricket fans around the world. Well Nasser, I've had a good look at the pitch and I can tell you with certainty that it's rather flat- Expect a score feast here today! There are some small cracks, but they shouldn't open up for a couple of days. There is of course the dew factor- We are just entering spring here in England and there certainly will be a bit of moisture around in the morning, but whether that has any significant affect on the day's play remains to be seen. So there we have it- We've got a batsman's paradise here at Old Trafford today; expect the winning captain to bat first.
David Gower: Expect a batsman's paradise.
Nasser Hussain: Thanks for that, David. Well, it's quite interesting to see that Lancashire have opted for a batting track, especially after you look at the bowling attack at their disposal. Will their plan backfire on them? One can only wait and see. In the mean time, let's have a look at the two line-ups:
A Cook
W Jefferson
M Yousuf
P Reeves
J Foster
R Bopara
B Shafayat
G Napier
A Tudor
A Dublin
M Oldman
I Sutcliffe
S Marshall
M North
E Joyce
M Loye
S Afridi
A Flintoff
G Cross
K Ali
S Mahmood
J Anderson
Nasser Hussain:The two names that immediately stand out in the Essex XI are of course Cook and Yousuf. Cook is an England opener and has plenty of experience at the top level. Over the last few years he has matured into a solid batsman and as Essex captain he leads the team from the front. Mohammad Yousuf, Essex's overseas player, is perhaps the most graceful batsman of our time: Technically perfect and with the ability to play every shot in the book, Yousuf is a world-class player and if he gets going then Lancashire are in big trouble!
Nasser Hussain:Moving onto Lancashire, you just need to take one look at their line-up and see how much talent they boast. With no less than six international players in their team, Lancashire are well-equipped in every department. Sutcliffe, North and Loye provide the stability in batting; Afridi and Flintoff the devastating hitting in the middle; and Ali, Mahmood and Anderson the lethal pace with the ball. This is going to be North's first match as captain; how will he handle the pressure?
Nasser Hussain:The captains and the umpires were down at the pitch half an hour for the coin toss. Marcus North called correctly for Lancashire, and after quickly looking at the pitch conditions, decided to bat first. And now finally the two teams are coming out for the first session's play. Let me hand it over to the first two commentators of the day: David Lloyd and Ian Ward.
David Lloyd:Thanks, Nasser. And here we go, the first match of the new domestic season! There's a cracking atmosphere around the ground, and I'm sure everyone is looking forward to a good game. Good morning, Ian!
Ian Ward:Morning, David. Yes, you're absolutely right; this is going to be a fascinating contest between two good teams. North is of course taking over Lancashire's captaincy, and this match will definitely test his abilities early on in the season. Lancashire boast a very strong middle-order, and thus they'll be hoping to get off to the best of starts today.
LANCASHIRE- 16/1 FIRST BLOOD TO NAPIER!
David Lloyd:Oh, what an absolute corker of a ball from Napier! Sutcliffe was trapped in front of his stumps by that inswinger and the umpire had no option but to give him out lbw! Lancashire's opener falls for just 7 as Essex get an early breakthrough.
LANCASHIRE- 31/2 NAPIER STRIKES AGAIN!
David Lloyd:Gone! Marshall top-edges and gives an easy catch to Bopara off Napier's bowling. Lancashire's other opener falls as Essex gain the upper hand!
Ian Ward:Napier strikes again as Marshall departs for 15. An unlucky FC debut for the youngster as the ball was seaming about and he just mistimed his hook shot. Lancashire in a bit of trouble now with two down so early.
LANCASHIRE- 35/3 OLDMAN BAGS THE OPPOSITION CAPTAIN!
David Lloyd: Out, that out! Lancashire is all sorts of trouble as their captain goes for 8! It was a big gamble to bring a spinner on so early in the game, but it paid off as North attempted a sweep but misread the length of the ball and had his stumps rearranged by Oldman! What a big wicket for Essex- They must be delighted!
