Selection Headaches

seletors1sc.jpg

The Australian selectors have some work on there hands in regards to the personel they put on the park in upcoming One Day International series. There has been some heated discussion and open opinions as they try to achieve the right mix of players to do battle in this tough series. Heres what Chairman of Selectors Trevor Hohns had to say.

Trevor Hohns said:
It has certainly been tough to come up with a team that will get the job done. Cricket Australia and myself see this as a big positive because it means that we have a great depth of players to chose from.

I would tip that everyone would be seeing some new faces on the feild as a trial in the 20Twenty match at Kolkata. It is a really good oppertunity for the fringe players to showcase there skills in an international match aswell as not having the high amount of pressure thats exurted on the players in the One Day and Test arena.

The 20Twenty match will be coming up shortly from Eden Gardens, Kolkata but who will take the feild for the Australians infront of a capacity crowd of 90,000?

The Pepsi 20Twenty Big Bash - Eden Gardens, Kolkata

Good to see that Pepsi are getting onboard and backing this match and also the one day series.

Ravi Shastri pitch report:A nice flat one for this contest where it shouldnt matter to much who wins the toss and it probably wont matter what they do first either. All in all a great night for the cricket spectator with clear sky and a good paced outfeild.

Toss: Ricky Ponting wins the toss

Ricky Ponting said:
Yeah um not to sure if thats a good thing or not but were going to have a bat anyway. I dont think it matters to much because all you need is a couple of blokes to hit the ball well and you can run away with the match. Just looking to get used to conditions tonight ahead of the One Day series and give a few new blokes a run aswell.

Rahul Dravid said:
Yes like Ricky i dont think it will matter to much that we are bowling first. We will be looking to start the series off well and show Australia just how god a team we are.

So thats the story Australia will bat but before that lets turn our attention to how the teams are lineing up.

India Line-up:

The Indian team looks the goods as they've got the fireing squad at the top of the order with Sehwag and Tendulkar aswell as the class players to follow. The main point of interest is that they have opted for the 5 bowlers seeing a they dont have an allrounder. If Australia can take early wickets against them then it may force them to go onto the defensive.

Australia Line-up:

The selectors pondered long and hard and theyve come up with a good team. The bowling options are very strong with 6 seamers to choose from and not forgetting the off spinners of Clarke. The batting is also very strong as there is alot of hitting power that should alow Australia to attack the whole way through the innings. Note the inclusion of Victorian Mick Lewis and New South Welshman Stuart Clark aswell as James Hopes at the top to open with Gilchrist.

Hopes makes his 20Twenty debut with Gilchrist who like other team mates has just the one knock in this form of the game.

India Get The Better Of It

Close Of Australias Innings

Australia got off to a good start with Gilchrist at top notch. Hopes was the support role as he struggled to time the ball.

After 5 overs and the departure of Adam Gilchrist who was caught at mid on after falling for the slower ball Australia was 1/35 and looking good.

Gilchrist attacked towards his 32

Unfortunatly for Australia Hopes continued to struggle and departed soon after his captain did as the touring side was reduced to 3 down in a short space of time. Martyn was the 4th man out after he was out cheaply stumped by Dhoni attempting to hit Singh out of the stadium. Australia 4/54 at the halfway stage.

Clarke and Symonds righted the ship with shear class and a bit of brute force. Symonds smashed 4 sixes as he showed no respect for the Indian bowling his favourite area being over long offs head.

Symonds puts Australia back in the hunt

Clarke hit one back to the bowler to be out for 18 as Hussey came to the crease in the situation he was born to play in. 5/92 with 5 overs to go crept upwards as Symonds and Hussey rotated with singles and managed about a boundary an over.

Symonds really looking to step it up was bowled by Singh with just a few balls left in the innings as Australia got to a competetive position at the close of there innings. India looks have the advantage at the moment as they just require 7 an over.

India Beaten To The Slog

Indan Close Of Innings

A dissapointing show from India as the Australians ripped through there top order. The stumps took a rattling as India tried more and more risky shots to try and keep intouch with the runrate.

McGrath celebrates the scalp of the little master Tendulkar

It never happend for them as the lost wickets regularly and once James Hopes was brought into the attack all hell broke lose. Hopes has taken 20Twenty crickets first 5 for in an amazing display of medium pace swing bowling.

Not much more to say except James Hopes you champion as he finished with 5/11 off just 2 overs.

Game over from Kolkata we'll look forward to the next meeting of these two teams in the One Day Series.

Win Or Walk

The media have got there hands on a story that will give Cricket Australia sleepless nights. It appears that long serving Australia coach John Buchanan has been told to come out of India with a series win or he will be sacked.

The Australian coach refused to comment on the matter when questioned at an Australian training session. He walked straight through a conjestion of media representitives to his car and drove off.

And interesting turn of events as Buchanan seem to no long have the faith of Cricket Australia. Are cracks appearing in the Australian team already on this tour.

Pepsi Preview
Australia In India
1st One Day International

The fun is done and both teams will be looking to get on top in the first one day international to be played at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

No clean favourite again coming into this game as India have the home crowd behind them but Australia has the 20Twenty win in there favour if that counts for anything.

Last time Australia was here they walked out victorious after a very long drought that went back to the days where cricket wasn?t a professional sport. This time it?s a different story for both sides. Ricky Ponting was missing for most of that tour and Indians captain has disappeared off the scene in that time.

Remembering back when Michael Clarke burst onto the international stage with a ton on debut and also managed a 6 for 9 but these days he?s out of the test team and still standing at the door waiting to be let back in.

This time the slate is clean both terms have started from scratch and there is no dominant team. India have there solid bating order with a few superstars amongst them also the lower middle order Dhoni with bowlers by the names of Pathan, Khan and lets not forget Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble. Australia on the other hand has the label of world champions which has proved to much for teams in the past. So many times we?ve seen that if one man fails the other?s fire to make up for it. Shane Warne the best spinner the worlds ever seen and the best ODI bowler in the world at the moment and the line and length of McGrath all in the same team make?s this summer seem like hell for India.

This series is set for 3 ODI?s and 3 Test Matches.

1st Pepsi One Day International - Eden Gardens, Kolkata

A great day overhead to start off the One Day Series here in Kolkata. Finally its time to get stuck into the tour after such a hype this one should be a cracka.

Ravi Shastri Pitch Report
Nothing really differnent about this pitch it will provide even bounce and be a dream to bat on. It may just start to crumble in the later stages as it is very dry and this weather probably wont help it's cause. As a captain i'd love to bat first out here and get a total of 270+.

Coin Toss India wins the toss

Rahul Dravid said:
We will bat first. It looks to be a good pitch and we will be looking forward to getting first use of it. Hopefully we can set a big total and give our bowlers every chance of getting us off to a win

Ricky Ponting said:
I would of liked to bat first but our bowlers can hopefully make some inroads for us early on here and set us up for a chase later on tonight. This is where the real cricket starts and we have been keen to get underway for a while.

There you have it India will bat first so lets have a look at the teams that will take the feild for the 1st ODI.

India Line-up

India returns to the pitch with 5 bowlers but this time with another Singh. The young paceman will provide some good bounce through to the keeper as he makes his mark on International cricket. The batting order remains the same and looks very strong they will look to post big here.

Australia Line-up

An overnight shock loss of Andrew Symonds who is sufferning from a shoulder injury in the nets. It is said to be a twang and nothing to serious but he will miss this match. Hopes steps in for him as the allrounder that will bat at number 7. Stuart Clark has come into the ODI scene as some poor recent performance from Bracken see's him out.

Updates will come at overs 20 and 40 and then at change of innings.

India Kick It Into Cruise Control

1st ODI - Eden Gardens, Kolkata
India 0/98
20 Overs

Sehwag 37*
Tendulkar 57*

McGrath 0/23
Lee 0/28

Australia in real trouble of losing this game already as Sehwag and Tendulkar have run away with the match. The bowling hasnt been to special but you have to give credit to the Indians as they have played outside of themselves to this point.

Australia are in this position for a reason as Tendulkar was dropped by Mike Hussey at first slip when he was on a modest 4. A massive moment in the match that has come back to haunt the Australians.

Q: How many will this dropped catch cost? A: Plenty

It will be a very long road if Australia are to get back into this contest but its by no means impossible however they need some quick wickets. Staurt Clark and James Hopes seem to be struggling with the ball so we could be seeing some of Michael Clarkes off spin to go with Brad Hogg. India ontop here as Australia have it all to do

India Show No Mercy

1st ODI - Eden Gardens, Kolkata
India 0/200
40 overs

Sehwag 75(108)*
Tendulkar 119(132)*

McGrath 0/23
Lee 0/40
Clark 0/45
Hopes 0/44
Hogg 0/48

Tendulkar and Sehwag have showed no sign of quitting as they push forward and are now in the position to score near 300. The Australian bowlers have been unable to find an answer on this pitch which is playing like a dream.

Sachin Tendulkar was seen as God in the eyes of the locals reaching an ODI hundred in what looked to be childsplay as he went hell for leather.

The crowd stood to there fet as the last ball of the 40th over sore the Indians bring up there 200 partnership. An amazing effort by anyones standards and it also puts India in poition to go for there shots in the final 10 over to get near 300.

Brad Hogg was on his game after finishing his 10 over at under 5 an over however Clark and Hopes seem to be finding it difficult as Tendulkar and Sehwag seem to be going after them.

All Is Set For The Chase

1st ODI - Eden Gardens, Kolkata
India 3/260
50 Overs
Change of Innings

Sehwag 102(133)
Tendulkar 119(133)

Lee 2/56
Clark 1/61

Australia Require 261 runs at 5.22 runs an over

Australia have fought back in this match but India still hold the advantage with the runs on the board. The home team would of liked a few more runs having only lost 3 wickets but Australia will have there work cut out under lights and with the humidity in the air. The ball is likely to swing around and be hard to hit in the middle.

A slower outfeild then what you would normaly expect in India will make Australia work hard.

Sehwag managed to reach his hundred in the closing overs and the crowd loved every minute of it before he was finally dismissed having been caught on the long off fence.

This will be one hell of a run chace as Gilchrist will look to attack and get Australia on the front foot. We'll see if Hopes can fill Symonds role with the bat in the middle order aswell. Can Australia get the runs? theres only one way to find out so stay watching.

Level Playing Feild

1st ODI - Eden Gardens, Kolkata
Australia 2/94

20 overs

Gilchrist 53(58)
Katich 25(42)

Pathan 1/45
Khan 1/25

Australia Require 167 runs from 30 overs at 5.57 runs an over

Comparison After 20 overs
India 0/98
Australia 2/94

Gilchrist and Katich needed a good start

This one is harder to pick then a broken nose. The Australians got ontop early through the hitting of Gilchrist and at one stage had the required run rate down near 4 an over. However India got right back in it as they quickly took the wickets of both openers to have two new batsman being Ponting and Martyn at the crease.

Gilchrist was out soon after reaching 50

A big partnership this one for Australia as they will look to keep running alone at 5 an over. This match is well and truly up for the taking.
