Story ICC World Cup Campaign - Australia

A good start from Australia. Keeping this run-rate up and wickets in hand could ensure a 300+ score.

I thought they were left handers!

they are thats a little glitch in the game.

Update of the last 10 overs

A lot of action has happened over the last 10 overs in the match. After the fall of Jaques wicket, it was Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden at the crease to try and keep the runs coming for Australia. Jaques went out on 17, and it was Ponting who replaced him.
Matthew Hayden had just reached his half century and was starting to settle down and look for his century. Ricky Ponting was up the other end watching Hayden be succesful in making his milestone, and he thought to himself "this is what i should be doing". Ponting must of listened to himself and took his own advice.
He was starting to play some wonderful strokes. A huge 6 came off the bat from Ponting midway through the over, a spin bowler against Ponting "Are you kidding?"

Things were going very nicely for the two batsmen. Haydos on one occasion was very lucky to still be out in the middle of the pitch and not back sitting down with his team mates in the change rooms. It was a short pitched ball from Hoffman, Hayden being the big hitting specimen he is, went after the poor ball. Little did Hayden know, there was a man standing in the direction that Hayden had put the ball. It was a wonderful shot, it certainly made connection with the middle of the bat, but it was sailing towards the fieldsmen.
But it was lucky enough for Hayden to die down just before the fieldsmen could get to the ball. The ball just stopped dead and headed for the ground, one bounce and into the hands of the fieldsmen, a lucky break their for Hayden and Australia.

Lucky enough to still be batting

Meanwhile with Haydos just surviving a ball from Hoffman, Ricky Ponting when on strike was looking dangerous. He was starting to left the temper a bit, and is playing with a lot more ease then he did when he first walked on to the ground.
Balls going past fielders, and running between the wickets was very impressive by the older pair. They were quick between the wickets, putting the Scotland fieldsmen under pressure everytime the ball came to ground.

Another boundary for Ponting

But there is always that little bit of glimpse from the opposition that tends to appear when things are going well for their opponents. Scotland made the breakthrough. It was Lyons that picked up the wicket of Matthew Hayden, whos wonderful innings came to an end. A very handy 62 from Hayden was one of the better knocks he has played in a long time.
Lockhart was the man that caught Hayden just before reaching the boundary rope, so it's now 2 down for Australia.

So with that wicket of Hayden, Michael Hussey is the new batsmen to the crease to join his Captain Ricky Ponting who is starting to really get a move on with his innings and i wouldn't be surprised if he himself will make his half century as he is quickly coming to it.

And so after the 30 overs, Ricky Ponting did end up making his Half century. Following Matthew Hayden's half century, it has been a wonderful spell from the Veteran. The Captain is showing his team what he wants them to do, and what a wonderful way then to make runs for his team, to try and help them make a reasonable today here today, and with 20 overs to go, they are certainly looking to produce that.

Australia have the advantage of lots of wickets in hand and a long tail so a big score should be expected here.

40 Overs gone, Australia in box seat

Just 10 overs ago, Captain Ricky Ponting made his half century. 10 overs later, Captain Ricky Ponting is closing in on his 100. A very fierce 10 overs from the Australian Captain has seen him jump into 2nd gear, and is raring to go for the last 10 overs of the one day international.
Ponting has played one hell of an innings and has overpassed Matthew Hayden in having the better innings for Australia with Hayden going out on 62. After the 40th over, Ponting is sitting on 96.

Ponting leaving nothing go

Boundaries, singles, wides, no balls, sixes, all came from the Ponting overs. He was just controlling the match the way he wanted to. Nothing was going to stop him. Scotland came out with many different bowlers, but not even the different bowlers could conjour something to stop the batting machine in Ponting.
Another massive 6 saw Ponting move into the 90's, and he had his eye on the century before the end of the innings. Will ponting get it?

Ponting lashing out

A little scar with Ponting however had the supporters questioning. A LBW decision had the supporters on the edge of their seats, It was going to be a tough call for the umpire, and let's have a look at the incident.

A tough call, out or not?

But the umpire shock his head and stood still. In any situation, that ball hit Ponting above the knee roll on his pads, which is the only thing that saved him from walking back to the pavillion.
He was dead set infront of the stumps, and it would of been out if the ball was pitched just a little bit lower.
Ponting was very lucky to survive right near his century.

Great period there for the Australians. Didn't lose a wicket but scored lots of runs. Ponting was extremely lucky but he deserves a hundred now.

He was extremely lucky, but the ball did bounce higher then the knee roll, so it couldn't of been called out... Therefore he survives :D

that lbw chance was plumb as. ponting lucky to get away with it. Australia are going very well and i feel a score of around 300+ should be acceptable

End of the Australian Innings

A lot of stuffed happened in the last 10 overs for the Australians. Michael Hussey and Ricky Ponting were left out in the middle to try and reach the 300+ mark for Australia to make it hard for Scotland to score that much to defeat them.
Ricky Ponting who was nearing his ton was looking better every shot that he played, and Michael Hussey was also following his Captain's lead.
Hussey showed some wonderful hitting technique as he blasted another few over the fence for 6, ecspecially this wonderful shot that he played in the 42nd over mark.....

A wonderful power shot from Mr. Cricket

Hussey, like his Captain was also very closely nearing a milestone, as Hussey was beginning to reach his Half century. It was going to be a battle between Hussey and Ponting on who can reach their Milestone first. Some good bowling kept Ponting from making some runs, while Hussey was picking off the singles all the time.
Hussey finally hit the single that counted, as he ran down the other end of the ground and celebrated a well deserved 50.

Hussey makes a well deserved 50

MichaelHussey50.jpg

Now that Hussey has made his milestone, he let his Captain have the strike as much as possible. Ponting and Hussey were certainly enjoying themselves out in the middle, as they had a laugh about Hussey keeping the strike from the Captain, as Ponting wanted the strike back, Hussey wouldn't offer for the singles. It was just fun and games out their now.

Finally Ponting got the strike back and got the 4 runs he needed to make his century. He celebrated for a couple of minutes, and the crowd went wild for the Aussie Captain. Ricky Ponting, playing a wonderful Innings has put his team into a very good position to win this match.

100 from Ponting = Superb

RickyPonting100.jpg

The next couple of overs before the Innings ended was very much one sided. The Scottish team had given up on getting wickets, they just wanted to get inside and come out and try and give it their best at their run chase. They will be fighting hard, as the Aussies total of 306 is a very good score for a one day match.
Ricky Ponting finished on 132 not out, while Michael Hussey also played well as he finished on 61 not out. It was a very dominate display from those 2, and with the support of Matty Hayden opening the batting as he made 61, it was a good all round contribution.
