India Team Discussion

Lol, okay :lol

But Rohit the opener is lot more consistent then Rahul. Since 2013 Rohit has hardly failed. Infact India has relied on his runs since 2015. There was a time where Rohit completely used to outplay even Kohli. But it's Kohli's sheer determination and hardwork that has put him right up there. Rohit is better than Ross Taylor in last 2-3 years. His number of runs and his average along with his strike rate is a good example of that. Also Ross Taylor hasn't played much against quality opposition in recent years apart from England. He has always done well against England scoring 4 hundreds against them since the series he play in 2015 right after the WC. But against Australia or South Africa he hasn't done well. And against India he has looked miserable apart from scoring a 100 at Tauranga in the 3rd ODI of the series played earlier this year that too was in a losing cause. While Rohit has won few matches single handedly for India in the same period. I am a big fan of KL Rahul but he was never ahead of Rohit Sharma the opener.

That's all I can say. :wave

Mate, I hadn’t followed cricket after an extended break closely up until that point. Not sure if my uneducated, wild guess a few years ago that was completely baseless and got scrapped in a few weeks deserves this big a post. :p

You know my posts are never small. I like to elaborate things. Believe me even my WhatsApp messages to people are this long :p

Tom Moody has again applied for the job and as I had said last time, he is the best option for us. I had said this even when Kumble had applied and stand by it!

Can someone explain to me why there is so much drama around all this if status quo is to be reinstated? Just get on with it and don't waste other applicants time and respect.

Kohli has basically strategically placed himself in a spot whereby if what he says is not adhered to then whoever gets the job will be under immense pressure to deliver right away.

To me, Kohli should have been reprimanded for blurting out his preferences on this coaching issue. To me, the guy has no remorse that we did not reach the final of the WC and make an attempt at winning it. He is happy that we topped the league stage and made the semifinals. He keeps saying that he hears from a lot of people that he meets, that they "praise him and the team for doing so well in this WC". So now that they did not make it past the semis, they look at the overall standings in the league stage and rate their performances on that. But this did not happen in 2015 when India under MSD did very well in the league stage but faltered in the semis against Australia. At that time, it was considered a failure for us (and rightly so).

And Kohli cannot have a second problem with another coach. If it happens, the guy must actually be thrown out of the team for good (his No. 1 batsmanship can be discarded; we are a nation of a billion people and someone else can come and fill Kohli's big sized batting boots).

What makes it annoying is that people like Ganguly and Kapil Dev are making statements in the media that Kohli has the right to say about the coach that he wants.

I agree with some things you say and disagree with some things as well.

First of all, I agree with the reprimand. He is openly courting his choices and it's disrespectful to other applicants. I have always said that I am not one for goody goody behaviour in front of the media which is why I didn't have any issue with the Pandya/Rahul Koffee episode. I have a problem here because Kohli is most powerful in this selection process and because of his episode with Kumble. He has basically indirectly told the BCCI to shove it in the rear about this coach selection process. He is calling the shots. He has also strategically placed himself in a situation where if Shastri is not reinstated and the team does poorly, he can use that to further his agenda.

Secondly, I don't think Kohli should feel 'remorse' over the loss in the semis. I think you were looking for another word. Perhaps, disappointment? I think a cricketer like Kohli must have felt hurt, perhaps still does so I don't for one second doubt his commitment or passion but I get your point. This celebration of topping the leagues is ridiculous. We underperformed in the World Cup should be the narrative but this management is trying to make it seem as if they were just unlucky. It shouldn't come as a surprise to us considering the nonsense that was spoken after Australia.

Thirdly, I don't think we can replace Kohli. We are not even started on solving the issue around number 4, the last thing we need is a problem around 3. Kohli is a once in a lifetime cricketer and I would play him every game, any format till whatever time he feels like playing. I don't care if we are a 1.3 billion nation, the world strives to be Virat Kohli and there are barely two or three who can be compared to him.

Kapil Dev and Sourav Ganguly are helpless. Kohli is just too powerful and they all want to be a part of the BCCI to draw handsome salaries. No one can stir the pot too much.

I think, we (including myself) keep taking aims at Shastri but we forget that he's a yes man and the real problem is Virat Kohli the captain. Now, we will smash West Indies and a huge news will be made about how we are winning abroad and how Kohli has made India no.1 in the rankings. That's what we lust as a country. Numbers. We are part of the problem, perhaps!

My comment on replacing Virat Kohli the batsman is ONLY if - he continues to hop on this "I have problems with a coach that was not my choice". I mentioned that if a coach is selected who is not Kohli's choice and Kohli repeats that entire "Kumble saga" again with a new coach, it will be time to shove him out of the team. I dont care if it destabilizes our No. 3 slot. When Gavaskar left, people didnt think there would be another Gavaskar. But Sachin came. When Sachin left, people though there will be no replacement. But Kohli came. Someone else will come and take up the mantle. And it will send out the message that "you are not bigger than the game".

And I disagree that Kohli should play until he wishes to stop playing. Nobody can assume that kind of a power in Indian cricket. And its been a mistake across generations for the BCCI and selectors to give such powers to many cricketers (Sachin was dealt in that way even though if he was a lesser mortal, he could have been dropped quite a few times). That kind of power in a nation like India is just so unfair to everybody

Basically what people are saying that Kohli is the most powerful person in the team at the moment. I would call that thing nothing more than a rubbish, utter rubbish !

You know people said the same thing when Dhoni was the Captain and people will day the same thing when a Rohit Sharma or a Shreyas Iyer or a Prithvi Shaw will become India's Captain if in case they don't do well and they would be backed. Things are being said that we just look at the number but thing is people on this forum are looking for the results which is similar to the former situation. Results are not something like if you press the switch you win if you don't you lose. My attitude with the Indian team has always been longevity. I want the team to be judged according to the process they follow over a period of time. If we do something make sure we do it for long. We might fail today to be successful later on.

I won't mind it at all if Tom Moody becomes the coach of this team. I think he is an ideal candidate and can definitely help this team. I have also heard that Mike Hesson has also applied for this position. He is another one who is an excellent man-manager and even though he hasn't played cricket, his skills alone are powerful enough to make him a good coach. However, we all know that they are just wasting their time because Shastri will get an extension.

I think you've nailed it. The coach is just an extension of the frustration. MSD can become the coach for all we like.. as long as Kohli is captain, the doom is here to stay.

Even Jayawardene would be good. As we have seen in IPL he gives an open sort of environment to his players and is tactically very good. He is my second choice as the first choice is already fixed by our Board :rolleyes

You dislike the choice of Shastri as the Indian coach, yet you call claims of Kohli being the most powerful man in the Indian dressing room horseshit when he has been the one who has publicly advocated for Shastri being the coach? :p

I would actually refrain from having such big names. A great player does not equal to a great coach and Greg Chappell made this quite emphatic. Blokes like Hesson, Moody etc. are seasoned, experienced campaigners with superb man management skills.

If Jayawardene's CV is about taking MI to the IPL title then I can only laugh. The Mumbai Indians franchise is overloaded with coaches and their team is streets ahead of any other franchise. If you really want to hire someone from MI, then it should be the bloke that scouts for them or the analyst who prepares their auction strategies.

I will repeat- A coach can only do so much. Gary Kirsten was RCB coach last year and we began last and finished there as well. The captain is the main man and ours is a certified baboon.
