India Team Discussion

I don't think we need another opener for now. Especially when Rahul has proved his worth. In test, Vijay and Rahul will be opening and in ODI & T20 we have Rohit and Rahul/Rahane. So, I don't think Gambhir will be given a chance.

Alright guys. Something was in my head and I thought I will share it.

Should Rahul be treated as opener in ODI and T20s ?

Let's ignore Dhawan for the discussion.

Rohit Sharma is not going anywhere for now. So, we have a choice between Jinx and Rahul. If Jinx doesn't open he would have to bat at #4 position. Honestly, he doesn't belong there. Suppose he comes to bat after 30, 35 overs we need someone in that spot who can accelerate the innings. I am not telling Jinx is not capable of that. But, Rahul is much more suitable for that position even though he is a good opener. We saw recently what Rahul could do when he comes to bat at #4 position. So, Rahul and Jinx are both good openers but Rahul is a better guy than Jinx for the #4 spot.

And, we have another guy for #4 spot. That is Manish Pandey. He was bloody awesome in that last match in Australia and he was equally good in recently finished Quadrangular tournament. Let's remember that Raina's form is shaky. He isn't playing well and he is inconsistent. So, #5 spot is also open. But, I feel Rahul is suitable for #5 spot than Pandey is. If Pandey comes at #4, Rahul can come at #5. He may be coming after 35 or 40 overs. So, we need someone who can hit from ball 1 and Rahul can do it.

I know I am dragging a good batsmen from an opener to #5 spot, but that's what India needs now. Jinx can open with Rohit. Pandey can come in at #4 and Rahul at #5.

I agree with your point on Rahul. But I don't think Manish will be seen in near future soon. He became a sideline after that Australia tour. I would be more than happy if he gets picked for limited overs alongside Rahul.

Dhawan have to say goodbye for now. There are lots of emerging openers in Rahul, Rahane, Agarwal, Mukund etc... Even Gauti has been fantastic in domestic cricket so far...

I'd preferably pick this as a good strong home squad (copnsidering z and Saroj's posts):

Virat Kohli :c:

Openers :bat:
Murali Vijay
Lokesh Rahul :wk:
Gautam Gambhir

Top Order :bat:
Cheteshwar Pujara
Virat Kohli

Middle Order :bat:
Ajinkya Rahane
Rohit Sharma
Wriddhiman Saha :wk:

All Rounders :ar:
Ravichandran Ashwin

Bowlers :bwl:
Mohammed Shami
Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Ishant Sharma

Ravindra Jadeja
Amit Mishra

Saha's position still in danger.
Karthik doing well. So as Sheldon Jackson

How is Saha's position in danger? Karthik has done okay and Jackson decent. Didn't Saha score his first Test century a while back? Also he is a very good keeper if not a good batsman.

Pujara scores 256* for India Red
