'And so when you criticise Sibley – a man with a clear, proven skill in terms of wicket preservation – be aware that nobody else is lurking with a greater skill, a clearer ability to smash opposition attacks. Both would be nice.'

A few very interesting reads there.Sorry, I woke up early and the Sibley clickbait hype train is in full flow.
Ignore Bedingham because he's South African, but what would be the harm in trying one or both of the other two?A few very interesting reads there.
It is bizarre to think how little certainty there is that any given member of this team will play the next game, let alone the next Ashes.
It is concerning though that Burns and Sibley really are the best openers available no matter how much experimentation one does. Unless...

Carlson is a middle order batsman. Which for the most part isn't a problem. Root, Stokes, Pope, Buttler when all available is probably the preferred line up, while they aren't they will keep throwing Jonny B into the fire and hope he comes good.Ignore Bedingham because he's South African, but what would be the harm in trying one or both of the other two?

Edit: and Tom Abell- man's averaging 63 this year
True, I was more looking at batsmen who have been good this year. The thought being, if nobody is good enough when they're average, maybe it's just worth picking the people who are tearing it up domestically (those three being the only Englishmen averaging over 50, and of only a select few averaging over 40).Carlson is a middle order batsman. Libby is probably there or thereabouts, I doubt he'd get a chance until next summer and that's if Sibley, Hameed and Crawley are all ditched (I think Burns is probably safe). Abell has some injury but has been in A-teams. I mean there's no shortage of batters who average a touch over 30 in England.
James Bracey was the 'next' option and that was a disaster.
The great test match innings - Lara 400, Laxman vs Australia, a ton or seven by Bradman, Stokes vs Australia - and today Jonny Bairstow's half-century.
Only taken two years between half-centuries. Helps to be batting in the sun, with his mate and on a flattened wicket.I will give him a bit of credit tbf. He is trying to bat in a Test Match style. Not played half as many loose shots as I'd come to expect. Getting back and accross as well, so not leaving that giant gap between bat and pad
