5th Test or not, I have to say Ind v Eng has become a bit of an overkill nowadays. The English Test side isn't as exciting as their ODI/ Australians and to have to play them the entire year over 9 Tests is an eye sore of sorts. It reminds me of the Ind v SRL we used to have in the run up to the ICC CWC 2011. I had even jokingly remarked that in the event of an Ind v SRL final, the spectators would probably get bored. To top it, there's another Ind v Eng tour scheduled next year.
Nobody in cricket, or any other sport for that matter, seems to understand the concept of over saturation. Things like a test against India or an Ashes series, or any test series really, used to be a huge deal but now its a constant treadmill of game after game.

Then they wonder why interest is dipping and come up with things like The Hundred to 'fix' the problem.

Dada dada dada .. pinning it all on the players to wash off IPL. This is why politics s*cks - makes you turn on your idols

He's confirmed the Indian players refused to play so in line with the current ICC regulations that's clearly a forfeit so at least that's cleared up.
16.2 ICC Match Referee awarding a match
16.2.1 A match shall be lost by a side which either
16.2.1.1 concedes defeat or
16.2.1.2 in the opinion of the ICC Match Referee refuses to play and the ICC Match Referee shall award the match to the other side.

The regulations quoted are from the revised test match conditions effective from 1st July 2021 to cover covid related issues.
Fine. But the official statement released by ECB says that ECB in co-ordination BCCI with the have agreed to postpone the match indefinitely. So in no way BCCI have refused to play but this is a decision made by mutual co-ordination between the respective boards.

I get wanting to support your team but you can't change the facts to suit. This is the ECB statement:

Following ongoing conversations with the BCCI, the ECB can confirm that the fifth LV= Insurance Test between England and India Men due to start today at Emirates Old Trafford, will be cancelled.

Due to fears of a further increase in the number of COVID cases inside the camp, India are regrettably unable to field a team.

We send our sincere apologies to fans and partners for this news, which we know will cause immense disappointment and inconvenience to many.

Further information will be shared in due course.

That was of course the second statement, the first said:

Due to fears of a further increase in the number of COVID cases inside the camp, India are unable to field a team and will instead forfeit the match,

The ECB have also requested that the ICC begin the adjudicating process to rule on the result of the match so they are clearly not expecting it to be played at some point in the future.

Additionally the BCCI President has spoken to The Telegraph India and said:

The players refused to play but you can't blame them.

Don't think you can look at the various statements and conclude there was a decision made by both boards not to play and the match is postponed to be played at a later date. Any future match will be to serve as financial compensation to the ECB for lost revenues and will be a standalone test, although looking at next summers schedule I struggle to see where a test could be added.

Based on all the sound-bytes so far, it will be 2-2. England Test Team saved from a series loss against India at home

Covid and IPL say, 'you are welcome'

According to the sound bytes from Ganguly that I have read, he says India is willing to play extra T20I's next year as long as the Manchester test match is NOT played as a one-off test. It should be played as a completion of the series that just happened.

And to cover up for the loss of acclimatization, they should play the white ball leg first and then end the tour with the test match.

Both ECB and BCCI would only bother about the monetary inflows tbh. If either of Ind/Eng fails to make it to the ICC WTC Final 2023 on the basis of this 'Manchester Test'. only then, would the admins take a keen interest.

Looking at the current schedule for next summer you'd struggle to fit the test in let alone a test and extra T20s unless they start playing games back to back. Isn't there a minimum number of days off mandated between tests? Sure that was mentioned as a reason all tests don't start on Thursdays in England anymore.

Never put anything past the ECB when there's money on offer but not sure they'll be up for rearranging the whole schedule.

That re-scheduled 'Manchester Test' is worth more than the entire 'Pakistan/WI/Bangladesh tour of England'. So, doesn't surprise me.

The cancellation serves the ECB right for prioritising IPL over the Pakistan tour :p
kidding
They heard me, it seems :lol
Apparently England's management wants all the players available for the Pakistan tour, as it's considered crucial to prepare for WT20.
