India tour of South Africa - 2013/14

Hopefully we all get to see another masterful innings from Tendulkar in his 200th test and if he can help India win the series that would be a wonderful time for him to retire from the game.

What happened to "the world's fastest Indian bowler not to be seen anywhere recently" Atul Sharma? :p I know it has nothing to do with this topic but seen some recent posts about bowling so thought popping this up.

Atul who? IIRC, he never played any competitive cricket, not even in IPL for RR where some research over the internet suggests me that he was named to be a part of. Chances are he was just a hoax like the fake IPL player.

Yeah been a couple of years since I heard of him, the guy who always bowled over 100 mph , used his shoulders to roll big and heavy stones as a warm up :facepalm

Yeah, it has every chance for being a win-win situation. I think there are still plenty among Indian fans who wouldn't mind seeing Gambhir back opening in Tests. If he can fix some of his bad habits regarding chasing balls aimed at the fourth stump outside off, I think he still has a tighter and cleaner technique to deal with the moving ball than someone like M Vijay.

My XI for the South African tests would be:
1 Gautam Gambhir 2 Shikhar Dhawan 3 Cheteshwar Pujara 4 Sachin Tendulkar 5 Virat Kohli 6 MS Dhoni 7 Ravindra Jadeja 8 R Ashwin 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar 10 Zaheer Khan 11 Umesh Yadav

I hate to have Zaheer and to some extent Tendulkar in there as total liabilities in the field, but skill-wise, this XI probably gives us the best balance. And if we find ourselves a batsman short, we can bring in Rohit Sharma for Jadeja and drop Dhoni to 7.

Does anybody think that Sachin Tendulkar still can make a century in this upcoming South Africa tour? I also believe Pujara will fare well on those pitches as his technique is reminiscent of Rahul Dravid and he has a lot of patience and skill ( 2 double hundreds already in less than 15 test matches).

I don't know about Tendulkar - I never do. I've criticized him before but then he somehow seems to come good, so I just kind of wait and watch. Pujara looked like a chump the last time he was in South Africa, but hopefully he's tightened up since then and should be a useful presence at the critical one-drop position.

Since Dhawan's technique is largely untested in difficult conditions, it's entirely possible that Pujara will be in to bat very early in the innings.

Despite popular belief Sachin is not only after his 200th test but also wants that triple century. Also as much as I want him to retire it would be very selfish not to retire on home soil, the Indians have supported him through good and bad times he is their god, he is their king, he is their hero, they deserve to see him play his last test inns on Indian soil!

Yeah I've criticized him before as well because it gets frustrating when he doesn't perform and it's basically tendulkar failure = india failure like 60 to 70% of the time just like the double whitewash in England and Australia. I just love watching him bat, I don't know if you agree with me on that but he's just different compared to any other cricketer because of his skill and abilities. Then he always comes good when you think he's done so we'll see what he has left in him. I'm thinking at the most one more century in South Africa. Pujara looks better than what he was when he was in South Africa last time, looks more mature and his technique looks better. I also think dhawan is better to have than Sehwag.

I agree with you but how long would he have to wait to get another series in india cause after South Africa, india goes to New Zealand. So idk how long before india plays at home. Depending on if it is a poor run for him in South Africa he might hang his boots. Are you a fan of sachin?

So I have just heard that the original choice of Essex was Virendar Sehwag. However, he was not interested in playing for Essex and that is why they picked Gambhir. If that is true, than it is pretty sad because if Sehwag wants to come back, he has to grab this chances. If it's for personal reason that I can understand but if there is some other reason than I would say he hasn't made a wise decision.

Back on topic, another solid day for Indians again. They scored 301 runs and took an early wicket as well. Good to see Rohit with runs again and Raina has also scored a quick century. Disappointing to see Rahane fail again.

The tour is not useless. Only the triangular OD series was stupid because of the flat pitch. This 2 test will be me more than useful because the conditions are apparently different.
