So we haev 61 names that I could recollect who are crucial to IPL in one or other way. Looks like from that list hardly 15-20 wll be retained amongst the 8 franchise. There are so many more names I have not even listed like Khaleel Ahmed, Priyam Garg, Goswami, etc.

I feel the other two teams will definitely get to pick big names. I think most of the teams barring Mumbai might go for a 3-1 retention (Indian - International). That would mean that

CSK
  1. Gaikwad
  2. Jadeja
  3. Chahar/Thakur
  4. Ali/Curran
Delhi
  1. Iyer
  2. Pant
  3. Shaw
  4. Stoinis
KKR
  1. Gill
  2. Rana
  3. Chakravarthy
  4. Narine/Russel
Mumbai
  1. Rohit Sharma
  2. Jasprit Bumrah
  3. SKY/Kishan
  4. Pollard
Punjab - KL wants out so may be he is picked by Ahmedabad or Lucknow
  1. Mayank
  2. Shami
Rajasthan
  1. Samson
  2. Jaiswal
  3. Ben Stokes
  4. Archer
RCB
  1. Kohli
  2. ABD
  3. Devdutt
  4. Siraj
SRH
  1. Williamson
  2. Bhuvi
  3. Rashid Khan
  4. Saha?
So even with these players we have so many big names for the new Franchise to pick. What good this expansion does is give equal opportunities. Like for example, Dube did not play for RR until the end. If he is part of the new Franchise, he will play for in the XI.

I am actually excited what happens and who is retained who goes where. Might make me support one of the newer franchise. Also supporting the newer franchise totally depends on the names for me :p

I agree with the fact that 4 retentions are quite a bit for these teams. At least, there's no RTM this time round. That said, the likes of Ahmedabad and Lucknow will still get some good picks, courtesy of teams like Punjab and Rajasthan, who might not retain anyone. Below is my undersandinfg of how the teams should look like in the future. Clearly, the lookout should be more on having players around whom you can build a team+ captaincy.

Mumbai
Its given that Rohit + Bumrah will be retained. The question is on the remaining 2 positons. MI will fill up their quote in order to retain a core. The question though- is who will form a part of the core here? Hardik, Kishan, SKY and Pollard form the core- among this though, my vote goes for Kishan as he can be groomed as a future leader under Rohit. The last spot , in my opinion ought to go to Trent Boult. Pollard is a liability and wouldn't be able to provide the same level of inputs next year, hence.

Chennai
Dhoni, Jadeja, Rituraj +Curran. I'd llike them to have picked Thakur there- if there was an option for a 4th Indian, they would have done so.

Delhi
They have mentioned they will part ways with Iyer (feel for him, but he will get something far better). Pant, Shaw + Nortje, Rabada. They have to retain the bowling core. Batting can be beefed up via the auctions.

Bangalore
Its a great chance to do a complete overhaul. I would not recommend retaining Kohli, but am sure this wont happen. My ideal strategy would be for them to not to retain anyone and go all in, into the auctions. However, am sure they will retain Kohli, AB, Padikkal and Sundar. The concern with this retention- this will be driven by Kohli, who has given up the leadership. This would probably create a rift in case Virat doesn't get a captain of his choice.

Kolkata
The direction should now be to re-build under Gill. Its the right time to groom his leadership and it may take a year or two. However, Gill is one for the future and would hate to see him go. Tripathi, Nagarkoti/Mavi + Lockie Ferguson. This will leave them to pick up a couple of senior pros at the auction, to help guide Gill through. Its easy cause the like of Smith, Warner, Morgan might be available cheap now.

Punjab
Whom should they retain? (now that KLR doesnt want to be a part) - Mayank, Bishnoi, Porel + Malan. Make Mayank captain and build around him.
Whom will they actually retain? Shahrukh, Prabhsimran, Sarfaraz and Harpreet Brar

Rajasthan
Whom should they retain? -Stokes, Archer, Samson and Kartik. Given their history though, they might want to go all in, into the auctions. I personally feel that Stokes and Archer might not want to stay with an underperforming team, that doesnt have a strategy in place.

Hyderabad
Their best bet is to retain Mitch Marsh and Rashid. Make either of them captain and let is roll. Given Rashid's rising stocks- he might be tempted to move away from the franchisee which has taken some dubious decisions lately. Akin to Punjab though, they may retain the likes Kedar ,Vijay Shankar which will simply be disastrous.

Ahmedabad and Lucknow
they will get the right to pick 3 players directly. Thats a vast choice to be honest and they will have to be smart about their picks. Expect the likes of Shreyas Iyer, KLR, Chahal, Siraj, Warner, Kane, Raina to be picked via the draft by these cities.

Pollard is a liability
Pollard is possibly one of the better limited overs player in the world. To consider him as a liability is quite harsh on him. I don't think he has done poorly. He was one of the reasons why MI won the 2019 & 2020 IPL seasons. Also, in the match against CSK at Delhi when MI were absolutely down and out, it was Pollard who single handedly brought them back into the game. He is an impact player for MI!

How does retention work when players have pulled out and been replaced?

Like could KKR retain Pat Cummins and Tim Southee or only Southee (a replacement) or only Cummins, the original signing?

How does it make sense that existing franchises get 4 retentions, while the new ones can draft max 3 players?

During mini auctions, the team can even retain both of them but they have to release an overseas player other than these two to make the total overseas players count to 8.

e.g. SRH retained both Mitchell Marsh and Jason Holder (replacement of Marsh in IPL 2020) and released Fabian Allen and Billy Stanlake in IPL 2021 auction.

Actually only one Overseas player can be retained
It is either 3 Indians +1 Foreigner / 2 Indians + 2 Foreigners

Carrying him on, especially in an auction which will define your strategy for the next 10 years, won't be a right call. As I previously mentioned, retain those likely to help the team over a larger period of time. Rohit, with his invaluable experience can guide Kishan to take over at a latter stage. Pollard can actually make way for them to retain a strong bowler.

Good question! I am sure it is either or. Cause way back when Sahara and Kochi were the 2 cities added in, Bangalore managed to retain Gayle, even though he was simply a replacement player. Not a 100% sure on this tbh

Isn’t there a mega auction after 4 years? If so, Pollard is definitely valuable for the next 4 years.

The assumption is that BCCI will add 2 more teams after 4 years. In order to help teams strategize well, I think the BCCI needs to chart out a plan where they clearly mention addition of franchisees alongside any mega auctions, if any.
