Indian Premier League - General Discussion

Too early to say that. Though he's been very good for Mumbai, international cricket is a different ball game altogether.

He’s done well in domestic cricket too. I reckon he’ll be fine.

I think their decision to release Hardik Pandya (or if he wanted to be released in order to captain Gujarat) probably cost them a huge lot. If Hardik was retained, he gives them a solid floater in the middle order, a guy who can bowl crucial overs and take imp wickets and also a proper captaincy material. Mumbai Indians did not see the captaincy potential in Hardik and chose a much older Suryakumar Yadav over Hardik. I would be hugely surprised if Hardik chose to leave, because Mumbai like Chennai is another franchise that players love to be with and wouldnt want to leave due to the environment (and who would want to leave the Ambani owned team :lol)

From the rumours I know of… Hardik did want to get released to be the captain for GT. It makes sense from his perspective too, Rohit did a very similar move in 2013.

Hardik wanted to be captain or atleast deputy. MI preferred the old hand of Pollard and SKY to Hardik. Truth be told, Pandya with limited captaincy exposure at that time wouldn't have been my choice.

Furthermore, I disagree with your point that Pandya is a strong player. He is a bits and pieces player, who led the team to the IPL title. I still do not see much potential in him, in terms of leading the side.

As for leaving the franchisee- I think players are leaving nowadays due to lack of opportunities. Being with a franchisee for 5-6 years and hardly getting game is a waste of someone's potential. Lot of people have left the league altogether on this account as well.

Tilak Verma might get drafted into the senior side soon. Lot of open spaces in the T20 setup. Especially if we ar ebuilding towards 2024, Verma will get a look in, in a shoddy middle order.

TBH - can't blame any players anymore. Most sides have an XI picked from the start and due to the nature of the game generally don't like to change the XI for the first 5-6 games. Unless someone goes for like 45/50 runs in their 4 or gets a few golden ducks the chances of another player breaking in to the XI for a prolonged enough period or in their ideal position is very rare.

I honestly believe sides like MI had a strong XI that worked a few years back with Malinga and Bumrah being good enought to pick up the slack of the other bowlers and Bhajji good enought to get you 4 very economical overs - thats 12/20 overs sorted with wickets at all stages of the game. With a younger and more prime Rohit Sharma to chase with SKY and Pollard to finish off. During the time of Malinga, the never really found another bowler to replace him once he left. Looking at the side that played yesterday, baring Jofra Archer there are no bowlers that i would turn too in a pinch! And with the batting, seems like a little brittle in the batting division aswell. No more Pandya brothers - be a surprise if they make it to the play off honestly.

I get the point of the core and how the team wouldn't want to jeopardize it. Perhaps the BCCI ought to limit the number of players that ca be drafted in the squad to avoid redundancies across. Teams carry around 25 players- akin to a football team. Doens't make much sense when you only require a squad size of at max 17 players.

Is it just me or does anyone else feel that considering CSK's bowling only one of Dube/Rayudu should play?

Tushar's first over is not going to make Sai happy!

Typical KL inning :mask:

20 off 18 chasing 200+, great anchoring, didn’t let his wicket fall in the Powerplay.
