It's a pretty small sample though, hard to draw real conclusions from it ie. 70 overs for Ishant in those 4 countries over 3 years of cricket isn't very much really. Better numbers than Yadav though...wow

I believe that is the most logical reason. Pakistan have had legends in the bowling department whereas India didn't. There are no role models in India when it comes to bowling.

I'm pretty sure every new kid who holds the bat wishes to become Tendulkar one day, but not many would like to be a Kapil Dev or Srinath for that matter.

This theory has never really swayed me. Pakistan produced great fast bowlers and then people became fans of the art. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, the fast bowling craze didn't really kick off til the 80s and 90s with Khan, Akram and Younis. But Pakistan had a good group of pace bowlers going back as far in time as the 50s....who were their idols? Pakistan had just started playing cricket.

This is a very good point. Pakistan have had a great pure pace bowler to look up to since their earliest days as a Test nation (Fazal Mahmood, Sarfaraz, Imran, and so on and so forth).

Having said that, I think the difference might be in how the public perceives a discipline to be the dominant one that they would want to pursue. I don't know about India, but in Pakistan it's always been the fast bowlers that the media props up and they get the best commercial deals (Afridi being an exception to that rule) so perhaps that's why growing up I always wanted to bowl fast like Waqar Younis and drink Pepsi instead of learning how to hold a bat.

I agree that its more about the attitude and personality. I have always seen the Pakistanis are very aggressive and the type of people who wouldn't mind to blow others out (no pun intended!). That kind of an attitude probably breeds more fast bowlers in that side of the subcontinent.

Even Sri Lanka doesn't have great fast bowlers (except for Chaminda Vaas, I find it hard to think of anyone else who is truly world class). Of course, Sri Lanka have been in cricket far lesser than both India and Pakistan, but still they have been here for 30-35 years.

I'm not sure I agree with that at all. You don't think it takes an aggressive mindset to bat like a Sehwag, Yuvraj, or a Kohli? Why didn't these guys pick bowling as a discipline instead of batting? Again, I think it's because certain things are more glorified in the media differently in either India or Pakistan.

Hasn't helped Australia find the next Shane Warne... He was supposed to have reborn leg spin. I guess he has in a way, since there is no shortage of overweight Dad's trying their Shane Warne imitations down at the park each summer But producing a great leg spinner? Hasn't happened yet.

India as everyone knows has produced 3 quality fast bowlers in its 72 year international history: Dev, Srinath & Zaheer. So if they can get any three of the current lot of Shami, Yadav, B Kumar to become of similar like coming years - it will be historical for IND cricket.

I found this post really interesting now. Today we not only have 3 but atleast 6-7 such bowlers!!!!!
