iPhone 4

Most likely, I might go for iPhone 4 a few months later. Looks much better than the previous version in terms of physical appearence. I am hoping they have made improvements to the call quality problems that were talked about in the previous versions. A 16Gb model at $199 (with a 2-yr contract with AT&T) is very good. Will sell my current iTouch and put that money into buying this new toy. They also have the new data plan of '200mb for $15/mo'. That sounds much better than the 'unlimited for $30/mo'. Anyways I am not going to use my iPhone for heavy internet surfing, so 200mb at half the cost sounds good.

I just bumped down to the 2GB plan from unlimited. Only saves me $5 a month, but it's a start. AT&T offers monitoring tools for data and the last couple of months I was over 200MB. The crappy thing is it's $15 for 200 MB and $15 more for each block of 200 after that. So if you use 201 MB, you're going to be paying $30, compared to the $25 it costs for 2 GB.

If my usage goes down to below 200 MB over the next couple of months I'll bump it back down. I hardly use the internet, by the way. Mostly just email and a bit of web browsing. I watch maybe 2-3 YT videos over a month. So the data definitely adds up.

@ sohum: Do the new plans have unlimited AT&T Wi-Fi hotspot access with them? Thats what was advertised on AT&T. Anyways I will watch videos only when I am connected to a Wi-Fi access point, not on 3G. How much data does it take up if you use GPS on the iPhone?

Day by day, my interest for iPhone 4 is goin up.

Yeah, it has some AT&T WiFi connection... not sure of the details. But I was nowhere near 2gigs a month (I don't think I've hit 2 gigs aggregated since I've had the iPhone) so I went for that plan.

GPS takes plenty of data, I guess, since I do use it quite a bit. I guess that's where all my data is going. There's an estimator somewhere on the AT&T website but I don't know if it accounts for GPS.

Is there a contract for the data plan? ie can you bump down from the 2gig pan to the 200mb plan and bump it back up on like a month to month basis?

I would spring for the 2gig plan when i'm traveling and just keep it to 200mb/month when i'm at home.

The difference between a 2gig plan and the unlimited plan is just $5. So if you have the money, you can have unlimited itself and switch between unlimited and the 200mb one.

I think you should be able to switch between the plans. If you have a phone which you got at AT&T and it had a restriction like 'have XYZ plan for 2 yrs' or so, then you have to be careful. If you didnt have any such restrictions on what plan you should have with your phone, you should be able to switch between plans either by logging into your account online or calling 611 from your phone and talking to AT&T rep.

There's no contract for the data plan as far as I am aware. I was able to bump it down to 2 gigs. I think the only contract obligation is that you have to have some form of a data plan. You can't just go with no data. You should of course talk to an AT&T rep before purchase if you're thinking of buying.

There is no option to opt in to the unlimited plan anymore. The unlimited plan is only available to people who signed their contract when AT&T had only the unlimited plan. These people have the option to keep doing the unlimited plan as long as they wish, but if you're a new subscriber you only have the option of 200MB/2GB (as well as an enterprise bundle).

Waiting to get an iPhone 4. The hype and the reviews have sucked me in. Those who have got the iPhone 4, please tell about call quality. Is it better than the previous versions? Is the network coverage any different (better or worse)? These two are the most important. Rest are all luxuries.

Right now, all the eyes are on iPhone 4. Hard to shift to any other device. Thats the magic of Apple!

Anyone looking at anything other than the iPhone 4 right now are actually deluded in life. Its epically good!

Kshitiz, I've said before, iPhones may not have the latest technology, but they do things right.

At the end of the day, there are two elite phones in this life, the iPhone and one of the Driod phones but I can't remember which it is.

I was rather debating your line "Anyone not looking at the iPhone is deluded."...
Well the doing things right is largely personal opinion, and it also depends on what a person needs from their typical $500 USD+ smartphone. What's right for me might not be for you. An example is Steve Job's latest reply and Apple's offical stance towards numerous reports that holding the iPhone 4 in your palm reduces signal to almost 0, being "You're holding it wrong.". Well in Apple's eyes one might be holding it wrong but certainly for me I'd expect nothing like this by just holding my phone in my palm, which I've always done.

Again, the same narrow minded approach. Though I support Android, the statement that there is only one other elite phone, is again, largely wrong.
