Is Vettori NZ's greatest cricketer?

I'm sure I saw the article on cricinfo at the same time that this thread was created earlier today.

I might get into this business of stealing things from circinfo.

No, not even close. It's Richard Hadlee followed by Martin Crowe then the rest (A small group of five or so cricketers, Daniel Vettori included). I've seen so many people lately say that after Hadlee it's Vettori, clueless really. Martin Crowe was the best batsmen in the world for over a decade, so underrated for what he did.

Yea same. I thought that this thread was actually about that cricinfo article, but no reference to it in the opening post

Vettori at home in 100th test: I put pressure on myself to lead.

This is what Dan said exclusively to me this morning: by the way guys have you heard of this new site called cricinfo????:p

Anyway he didn't really steal an article: I suppose he was just asking a question here that had been posed at the cricinfo site. Fair enough, I think.

Anyway: Richard Hadlee and Martin Crowe are two names that stand out as being a notch higher than Dan. But there is no doubt that Dan is an excellent and world class cricketer. It is such a shame that he is basically the only one in the Kiwi setup at the moment.

Hadlee is easily much better. Hadlee is in the top 15 players of all time in world cricket. Vettori never will be sadly. He's a great player and probably will end about second best equal with Crowe. It's arguable which of them would have been better.

Martin Crowe is so far ahead of Vettori it isnt funny. The guy averaged 45 against the 80's WI! 48 against Australia and made two of the best tons seen in Australia during the 80's, and averaged over 60 IN Australia, which only the very best players do. Vettori just hasnt produced anything with bat or ball to compare with Crowe's mastery whatsoever. I can only conclude that those who are championing Vettori really havent watched very much of Crowe at all, or werent even born when he was playing. :facepalm

No. He isn't. He might be the greatest cricketer in the past 5yrs but not the greatest ever.

:laugh just saw there is an article titled "Is Vettori NZ's greatest cricketer?" on cricinfo's main page.

Looks like we might have another mini-RDF in the works here.

Go fly a kite, maaaaaan!

Commentators were talking about Vettori being only the second player in history to get 400 wickets and 4000 runs behind Dev. While he won't end up in the top 5 all rounders ever, that is a pretty good achievement

I agree, however Vettori of course is an all-rounder. Not only has he been outstanding with ball, but also with the bat. Captaincy also. It's all very well being a great batsmen but being both is something special. If Vettori keeps his last 5 years of batting up averaging 50odd and moves his average into the higher 30s and gets the 400,4000 thing then surely he's got to be around the same level of greatness as Crowe.

Player of the 1992 World Cup IIRC.

Hadlee all the way. He couldn't handle the Australian crowd chanting "Hadlee's a w_anker", though. But he was and still is NZ's best ever.
