Jesse Ryder - The Next England All-Rounder

Judging by his attitude I can't see him getting near a county team let alone an international one at this juncture in his career.

Maybe he'd do better to shut his trap, keep his head down and let his cricket do the talking. That's providing he can be bothered to turn up though.

'Scoring runs and taking wickets'? He has 32 wickets in 36 First Class matches and 25 wickets in 49 OD matches. That is part-timer standard IMO.

Hes only started to bowl in the last season really so that explains his lack of wickets.

He is strong enough to make it as a pure batsmen in most county sides

To be honest he has NO reason to play for England: at least Strauss, Pietersen etc. have a reason to be playing for England - English parents, raised here etc. But he just is doing it so that he can play international cricket. Plenty of people unfairly miss out on International cricket but don't do this so why should he?

He would have about as much right to do it as Pietersen, being that he has an English parent, but this is a guy who is pretty much getting all the opportunities he deserves and is just being stuck up about it. Pietersen says what made him leave was that he was not receiving first class opportunities because he could not be guaranteed games on merit because he was a young white player instead of a young coloured player. Apart from that I don't think you can doubt his commitment to the game.

Ryder on the other hand is not limited by his first class side. In fact, he even gets picked for tours with the national A side. However, when NZC ask him to do obvious things, like attend training camps or just improve his attitude, he goes and does the opposite. The funny thing is that the ECB would probably be the ones who value appropriate attitudes the most. As this story continues, I'll be very interested to see exactly how much he has killed his career.

Let alone his technical ability to play international cricket, there's absolutely no point in playing there without the right attitude.

As he says in a brief interview with SPIN magazine (march 2007): "It's hard to say really why I'm not picked" and contiunues "I could do job as a opening bat in the ODI's and could play in the test squad aswell". I've never heard any young player implying that the selectors are absolutely stupid not to pick him, it doesn't show any respect IMAO. I think that those two lines perfectly show what mr. Ryder thinks about his own ability and his own person.

There are questions raised about his fitness too. And I think it is just rude to say "okay, I'll come to England, but I want immeadately to be part of the test and ODI squad and you have to praise yourselfs lucky whit my arrival". Maybey England can use him as a " very loose cannon" in ODI's (maybey Fred's got himself a mate to go to the pub after the games :p), otherwise, I see not a very brilliant future for Ryder.

Indeed.

The funniest thing of all, the way he talks himself up, you expect Bradman incarnate when you look at his record. Sure, he's adequate in first class, but no, in limited overs, he averages a modest 25 with the bat and his bowling goes for nearly six runs an over. As a batsman he really doesn't deserve to go in ahead of any of NZ's first choice top or middle order, especially if that means someone like Ross Taylor is already squeezed out. Maybe NZ could use a bowler who takes wickets, but how confident of wickets can you be from a medium pacer against brutal international batsmen? Especially one whose fitness is under question, will such an all-rounder be able to step up to the intensity?

I'd rather not have another fat, over-rated foreign player trying their luck to qualify for England thanks, we have enough.

He does have attitude problems.

He's not ready for international cricket yet and doesn't deserve a spot in our NZ side.

And he isn't the fittest either. Bracewell made a comment back when the Champions Trophy squad was named that McMillan and Ryder missed out because they arn't fit and will need to work on it.

England or wherever can have him. He isn't that great. He's one of those players who plays agressivly. Goes out playing careless shots.

And he bowls part time spin. Defiantly not a front liner.
