left handed bowling

My son is an 11 year old left handed cricketer. I am not a cricketer myself but I trying to help coach him, but with him being left handed it's proving even more difficult.

He is a pretty consistent bowler, but during his last game, the umpire (someone from our own club) gave him 4-5 wides as they were pitching leg side. He hasn't really been bowling wides all season, and I couldn't actually see if I agreed with the umpire.

Could the umpire be declaring a ball wide unnecessarily due to the fact he is not used to how a left handed bowler pitches the ball? When I have been in the nets with him it generally skims past the legs side stumps consistently. He also is quite front on with his bowling style.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Please remember I am a non cricketer!
