Being given mostly flat subcontinental pitches to bowl on until now, a pace-friendly venue like Headingley was a welcome relief for Glenn McGrath who took his first five-fer of the season. He claimed 5 for 68 from 31 overs, including the wicket of his old nemesis Sachin Tendulkar for 11. The Professional XI had bowled out the Twenty20 Era XI to gain themselves a 64-run lead.

Dale Steyn went from strength to strength as the match progressed, claiming his second five-fer of the match to take his tally to 10 wickets. In doing so he became the first bowler to claim a match ten-fer in the season. The Professional XI had been reduced to 141/5 as a result of his initial burst which saw him claim the wickets of Richards, Border and Chappell - three of the biggest names in their middle-order. Adam Gilchrist and Steve Waugh battled on to add 92 for the 6th wicket to help get their team's lead past 300. They eventually set the Twenty20 Era XI a challenging target of 320, which isn't the easiest to chase in the 4th innings of a Test match.

In the first innings it was McGrath, and this time it was Wasim Akram. The Pakistani left-arm swing bowler devastated the Twenty20 Era XI lineup to claim an awe-inspiring 6 for 34 from 20 overs. The quality of his wickets said it all - Sangakkara, Dravid, Kallis, Tendulkar, de Villiers & Dhoni. The Professional XI celebrated a very convincing 117-run victory to take themselves to the top of the Season VIII standings.

Our batsmen batted really well in the first innings to get 300+ score. Bowlers outplayed the opposition batsmen on a pacy wicket. We had something as a lead score to continue our second innings. That helped the team to win this game comfortably. More balanced combination that is.

Graeme Pollock repaid the faith put in him despite a run of mediocre scores with a sublime hundred, his first of the season. He added 131 for the 3rd wicket alongside skipper Len Hutton, who made a triumphant return from injury with 91, and 77 with Everton Weekes, the other half-centurion in the Post-war XI lineup. They finished with 333 for their first innings.

A disciplined bowling effort from the Post-war XI saw the Early Test XI bowled out for 281, thus giving them a lead of 52 runs. Alan Davidson, with figures of 4 for 75 continued to pick up wickets with ridiculous ease like he has been doing all season.

Garry Sobers did not quite live up to the expectations during the first innings, where a scored a 5-ball duck despite batting at No 3 where he averages 72 in Test cricket. But he came back much better and stronger in the second innings with an unbeaten 170 off 326 balls during which he looked absolutely undismissable. It was also his highest ever LAB score and the first time he managed to cross 150 in an innings. With some good support from Graeme Pollock and Clyde Walcott, who scored two very brisk half-centuries, the Post-war XI had set their opponents a steep target of 467 with a day and a half to play in the match.

The Early Test XI tried another hard grind in their attempt to bat out a draw. For a while it worked, as the Post-war XI struggled to get past the resolute defence of Charles Bannerman and Arthur Shrewsbury. But with the bowling options they had available to them, it was only a matter of time before the other team folded. And so it proved when Lance Gibbs' dismissal of Shrewsbury spelled doom, and they lost their last 6 wickets for just 61 runs. Sobers himself managed a wicket to finish the match on a high with 170 runs and two tidy spells which earned him a total of 2 wickets across both innings.

Together, the pair bowled a total of 51 overs conceding just 108 runs and picking 8 wickets between themselves. KS Ranjitsinhji was the only batsman to score more than fifty in the innings.

Bart King bowled with all his heart to claim 5 for 55 from 28.1 overs in an innings where the rest of his team-mates were quite ruthlessly dominated by one man. He was also the one man King failed to dismiss despite giving it is very best efforts - Don Bradman.
It was yet another innings of pure brilliance from cricket's greatest ever batsman against a bowling attack containing Sydney Barnes, Hugh Trumble, Wilfred Rhodes and King himself. The Interwar XI finished with a huge lead of 215.

The Golden Age XI did enough to make the Interwar XI bat again in the Test. Once again, it was an American who stood head and shoulders above the rest while big names like Victor Trumper and Clem Hill failed to get going. George Patterson took to opening the batting against a world class bowling lineup like a duck to water, scoring 95 off 188 balls before being dismissed just five short of a deserved century. His effort raised a few questions - like why the ruddy hell was he benched this whole time? Nonetheless, the Interwar XI had a paltry 105 to chase which shouldn't be much trouble given the batting lineup they possess.

-X-Don Bradman dominated the Golden Age XI's bowling attack once again, this time with a ruthless 45 off just 43 balls while he was in a hurry to finish the match for his team. For the Golden Age XI, Bart King once again ran in with all his heart despite the match being well and truly lost. He finished the match with 7 wickets to his name, which is no mean feat against a lineup containing all of Jack Hobbs, Herbert Sutcliffe, Don Bradman, George Headley, Wally Hammond and Charles Macartney among others. The Interwar XI prevailed by a considerable margin of 8 wickets and now find themselves tied on points (56) with the Post-war XI in the Season VIII standings, with only the Twenty20 Era XI (57) and Professional XI (64) ahead of them. Needless to say, the next round will be crucial for all the four teams in question as they attempt to make it to the top two and thus qualify for the timeless grand finale.
