Having won the toss and opted to bat, Karachi didn't get off to the best of starts losing skipper Hanif Mohammad to just the third over of their innings. Charlie Turner began his spell with a superb wicket maiden.

They subsequently also lost their top-order rock in the form of Ken Barrington when the former quite foolishly decided to take on Garry Sobers' throwing arm. No finals heroics from him this time. Enter the Don..

In almost trademark fashion, he smashed the first ball he faced to the boundary. Has there ever been an LAB final where he hasn't?

The second ball also went all the way to the boundary. Okay, that I'll admit was rare..

Arthur_Morris_playing_career.jpg

But the joy was shortlived as they lost another in the form of Arthur Morris, their second most consistent run scorer behind only Bradman in the competition. Karachi were well and truly tottering at 36 for 3 after 8 overs, and now had their two best batsmen out in the middle. Can Bradman and Hammond turn it around, or will this turn into another humbling at the hands of PlanetCricket's wily bowling attack.

Franklyn-Stephenson-of-Sussex-indicates-to-team-mates-du.jpg

By gods, they nearly had him! Bradman offered a simple chance behind the wicket on 16 off Franklyn Stephenson which was dropped by Ken McEwan. You simply can't afford to drop someone like Bradman at any cost! The perils of not possessing a full-time wicket keeper in your lineup..

As if almost to spite them, Bradman raced to a half-century off just 29 balls - easily his fastest ever in this league. Hammond too was looking good at the other end. Kenneth Scott McEwan, what the hell have you done?!

There was finally some relief for PlanetCricket with Fred Trueman getting rid of Hammond for a well played 54. He had put on 152 in just 20.3 overs alongside Bradman to well and truly shift the balance of the match in Karachi's favor.

Having spent all day being carted around by Bradman and Hammond, Trueman was finally swinging things back in PlanetCricket's favor by dismissing the well set pair of Clyde Walcott and Neil Harvey in the 40th over to expose Karachi's tail - in the process bringing up a rather expensive 4-fer for himself to take his tournament wicket tally to 23 to equal the legendary George Lohmann at the very top of the charts. Can they still make it to 300, or will they get bowled out for not too many thereafter?

If Benaud was merely good, Bill Lockwood was simply breathtaking. Another man who had done next to nothing with the bat all tournament suddenly came out and gave PlanetCricket quite a shellacking with a superb 19-ball 33. Benaud finished unbeaten on 34 off 29 at other end; Karachi on a very formidable 334/8 which needless to say will require some chasing. One could go as far ahead to say they might already have on hand on the trophy.

Despite proving expensive, Bill Lockwood got another in the form of Wasim Jaffer - hardly a name you'd expect to turn up in a match featuring some of the greatest cricketers to ever draw breath, but it is what it is.

The standard of wicket-keeping certainly didn't improve as the match progressed with Clyde Walcott, another part-time keeper dropping Jack Hobbs on 36. Will it prove as costly to Karachi as Bradman's drop did to PlanetCricket?

While PlanetCricket looked to have the upper hand initially, Float Woods returned with a vengeance to rip out Garry Sobers and Ken McEwan with his sheer pace. It's all down to Aubrey Faulkner and Franklyn Stephenson now, with PlanetCricket needing a further 82 runs off the last 10 overs with 4 wickets in hand. The latter has a strike rate of nearly 150 in the competition and is renowned for pulling off stunning heists such as this one. But Karachi also crucially have 3 overs remaining from Woods, 2 from Lockwood, 4 from Trumble and 1 from Benaud with their only weak link in Hammond already having bowled out his full quota. This could get interesting.

But interestingly, Hanif Mohammad decided to attack with his two premier strike weapons rather than save them for the last couple of overs of the match which could undoubtedly prove crucial. Lockwood too bowled out his full quota for respectable figures of 10-0-65-2, which were good considering how little assistance bowlers have found from the pitch today. 55 off 36..

His strategy nearly paid dividends with Woods getting Faulkner to nick behind, only for Neil Harvey to fluff it. Man, the catching standards in this match have been nothing short of abysmal! 47 off 30..

U3bos95.jpg

The major flaw in Hanif's strategy was ruthlessly exposed by Aubrey Faulkner, as he was forced to turn to Ken Barrington's part-time legbreaks as a result of Hammond, Benaud and Lockwood all being bowled out, Woods having just one over up his sleeve and Trumble not looking particularly threatening with the ball today. Faulkner, who was looking a tad rusty out in the middle was now looking a lot more assured thanks to a boundary and massive six off Barrington to bring the equation down to a simpler 33 off 24..

But Hanif continued to back his tactics, and this time it paid off! The big hitting Franklyn Stephenson was bounced out by a venomous delivery from Woods to which he could do little but fend straight back to the bowler. One legendary cricketer to never play for the West Indies had got the other. But crucially for PlanetCricket, this also meant Woods was bowled out after a wonderful spell of 10-0-53-3 and they would now have to contend only with the likes of Trumble and Barrington. Boy do we have a match on our hands! 29 off 18 now..

Faulkner's the man! A six and a four off a struggling Hugh Trumble brought it down to 18 off the final 2 overs, one of which will undoubdetly have to be bowled by Ken Barrington thanks to Hanif's oversight.

Hanif felt a sense of impending doom as he quite reluctantly handed the ball back to Barrington, who all things considered did rather well to concede only 9 off the penultimate over. He was also somewhat fortunate that Fazal Mahmood and not Aubrey Faulkner was the batsman on strike throughout the over.

Its all down to Hugh Trumble now to defend 9 runs off the final over with Mahmood on strike and a superbly in-form Faulkner at the other end.

@Na Maloom Afraad @Pinch hitter @Yash.

I think the batting side didn't took correct advantage of the penultimate over and it might come to haunt them.

We're gonna lose this by a solitary run.

Faulkner should’ve refused the single on the last ball. Could be a massive mistake.

Bradman's innings may have ended, but PlanetCricket's torment at the hands of Karchi's batsmen surely hadn't. Clyde Walcott walked out and smashed his first delivery out of the ground, meaning the slaughter was to continue for now.

But Richie Benaud seemed to have other plans. Having recorded 4 ducks from his 6 innings in the competition prior to this match, he had saved his best with the bat for last and was adding some crucial runs to Karachi's cause alongside the plucky Hugh Trumble.

Hobbs certainly made the most of his reprieve by bringing up his half-century in style with a six. Monty Noble at the other end was also looking in irresistible form as a century partnership neared.

Not today though! Richie Benaud saw to it with an absolute ripper that breached through Hobbs' defences to see him dismissed for 92. Nevertheless, he had put PlanetCricket in a very good position where they now only have another 100 runs to get from the last 14 overs of the match with big hitters Franklyn Stephenson and Aubrey Faulkner yet to come.

47 off 30..

45.1 Barrington to Stephenson, three runs, Great work by Woods saved a certain boundary
45.2 Barrington to Faulkner, FOUR, That was a bad delivery by Ken Barrington, deserving this punishment
45.3 Barrington to Faulkner, no run, Aubrey Faulkner was completely deceived
45.4 Barrington to Faulkner, SIX, ???!!! Its coming towards the commentary box Im leaving!!!
45.5 Barrington to Faulkner, one run, That is very well run by Franklyn Stephenson
45.6 Barrington to Stephenson, no run, Left alone by Franklyn Stephenson

End of over 46 (14 runs)
         PLANETCRICKET 302/6

         Franklyn Stephenson 22(18b 2X4)
         Aubrey Faulkner 30(31b 2X4 1X6)

HTML:
46.1 Woods to Faulkner, one run, Great cooperation between Aubrey Faulkner and Franklyn Stephenson
46.2 Woods to Stephenson, OUT, Float Woods takes an easy catch to dismiss Franklyn Stephenson

         Franklyn Stephenson 22 (19b 2X4)
         c & b. Woods

46.3 Woods to Mahmood, one run, That was a very risky single.
46.4 Woods to Faulkner, one run, One more to the total
46.5 Woods to Mahmood, no run, That ball was a mystery to the batsman
46.6 Woods to Mahmood, one run, Great cooperation between Fazal Mahmood and Aubrey Faulkner
A good spell from Float Woods, a bit expensive but picking up some wickets. He was pretty effective with three wickets under his name

HTML:
47.1 Trumble to Mahmood, one run, The misfield by Harvey allows yet another run
47.2 Trumble to Faulkner, no run, Huge appeal for LBW but turned down
47.3 Trumble to Faulkner, no run, Aubrey Faulkner was completely deceived
47.4 Trumble to Faulkner, SIX, Display of Raw power and brutality by Aubrey Faulkner
47.5 Trumble to Faulkner, FOUR, Who needs Bradman when weve got Aubrey Faulkner
47.6 Trumble to Faulkner, no run, Appeal for LBW, a bit too optimistic though

         Fazal Mahmood 3(4b)

aubrey_faulkner.jpg

Faulkner's the man! A six and a four off a struggling Hugh Trumble brought it down to 18 off the final 2 overs, one of which will undoubdetly have to be bowled by Ken Barrington thanks to Hanif's oversight.

HTML:
48.1 Barrington to Mahmood, no run, Appeal for LBW, a bit too optimistic though
48.2 Barrington to Mahmood, no run, Huge appeal for LBW but turned down
48.3 Barrington to Mahmood, FOUR, Brillian cover drive by Fazal Mahmood
48.4 Barrington to Mahmood, no run, A lot of movement being extracted by Barrington
48.5 Barrington to Mahmood, FOUR, Ken Barrington cant belive it
48.6 Barrington to Mahmood, one run, Great cooperation between Fazal Mahmood and Aubrey Faulkner

End of over 49 (9 runs)
         PLANETCRICKET 326/7

         Aubrey Faulkner 42(38b 3X4 2X6)
         Fazal Mahmood 12(10b 2X4)

Hanif felt a sense of impending doom as he quite reluctantly handed the ball back to Barrington, who all things considered did rather well to concede only 9 off the penultimate over. He was also somewhat fortunate that Fazal Mahmood and not Aubrey Faulkner was the batsman on strike throughout the over. It's all down to Hugh Trumble to defend 9 off the final over now..

HTML:
49.1 Trumble to Mahmood, no run, That ball was a mystery to the batsman

3e0447d6f6ac65e8ddb5e362791505c9

Rather than play it cool and take a single to hand Faulkner back the strike, Fazal decided to go for the big shot and missed the ball completely. A bonus for a nervy Hugh Trumble. 9 off 5..
HTML:
49.2 Trumble to Mahmood, no run, Hugh Trumble is getting the ball to turn ferociously

6kMQThi.jpg

And again! Another dot ball courtesy of a nervous Fazal Mahmood who seems to have forgotten the basics of tail-end batting. Just get bat on ball and run with all your might! 9 off 4..
HTML:
49.3 Trumble to Mahmood, OUT, Don Bradman takes an easy catch to dismiss Fazal Mahmood

         Fazal Mahmood 12 (13b 2X4)
         c. Bradman b. Trumble

Mlmf7rB.jpg

He finally got bat on ball this time, but ended up chipping it straight into the safe hands of Don Bradman at cover! More crucially for Karachi, it's YET ANOTHER dot ball which brings the equation down to an even more difficult 9 off 3 balls with Faulkner off strike and a new batsman at the crease. Give him the bloody strike already for Christ's sake!
HTML:
49.4 Trumble to Turner, three runs, Excellent running 3 more

CTBTurner.jpg

Unlike Mahmood, Charlie Turner proved far more able by running the ball down to fine leg and then scrambling for three with all his might to do what they should have done much earlier, which is hand Faulkner back the strike. 6 off 2..
HTML:
49.5 Trumble to Faulkner, no run, Aubrey Faulkner was completely deceived

iCeMf8V.jpg

The big man having spent so much time in wait at the non-striker's end himself erred this time, which means nothing less than a last ball six can win it for PlanetCricket now..
Mlmf7rB.jpg

Hugh Trumble waltzed in to deliver the final ball of the tournament..

The ball went very high in the air with no fielder in that direction. It's certainly got the height, but will it get the distance?

It's not gone! In a remarkable twist that can only be termed as divine intervention, the ball fell barely an inch short of hitting the boundary rope on the full. Which means it's only a four, and Karach Cricket Club are officially the champions of Legends At Battle XI by the barest of bare margins i.e 1 run!! It was a fate that befell Glenn Maxwell in the recently concluded IPL this year, and would befall poor Aubrey Faulkner here. One couldn't help but feel for him and PlanetCricket; cricket is a game of fine margins indeed!

hAMMOND-BRADMAN.jpeg

Boasting arguably one of the strongest batting lineups ever assembled on paper in this league's history, Karachi lived up to the hype and emerged victorious. It would have arguably been a travesty if they hadn't with players like Don Bradman, Wally Hammond, Arthur Morris, Hanif Mohammad, Neil Harvey, Clyde Walcott, Ken Barrington and WG Grace just to name a few.

Jack-Hobbs.jpg

PlanetCricket, despite not possessing such a huge galaxy of stars apart from Jack Hobbs and Garry Sobers punched well above their weight throughout the competiton and were one of only two teams to beat Karachi, and the only team to do it twice. A shame it wasn't to be today in this title-deciding clash.

FloatWoods.jpg

While the Man of the Match award quite predictably went to Don Bradman, Karachi arguably owed their victory to one man - Float Woods, who claimed awe-inspiring figures of 3 for 53 off his 10 overs on the deadest of tracks where every other bowler routinely went at above 6 or 7 an over. His dismissals of Garry Sobers and Franklyn Stephenson were game-changing, and one would expect nothing less from the man who is to my mind the greatest never to play for the West Indies and the true 'godfather' of Caribbean fast bowling.

20140530070104.jpeg

There was one last surprise in store however, with Don Bradman (750 runs at 68.18 with 5 centuries, SR 101.63) being ignored for Player of the Tournament in favor of Fred Trueman, who ended the competition as it's leading wicket-taker tied with George Lohmann (23 wickets at 20.87) but claiming a superior 23 wickets at 18.17 with 2 four-wicket hauls and an overall economy rate of 4.95 per over. Something to cheer for PlanetCricket at least.

AAAAAAHHHH!!! Yes!!! :D :D :D I'll take that. I'll take that with all my heart! I can not believe we've actually done it. Yash's prediction of losing by a solitary run comes to fruition, and I couldn't be happier. Not sure what Hanif was thinking building up the final over for a spinner, but Hugh Trumble somehow, defended 9 runs and gave us the title. My first and probably my only LAB title, but I'm proud that it came for a team that's deserving. With the likes of Morris, Grace, Hanif, Bradman, Barrington, Hammond, Walcott, Armstrong, Benaud, Rhodes, Woods and Trumble we had to have been the favorites. I'm glad I could do their names justice and give them a taste of LAB glory. A fantastic campaign throughout, and the perfect result to cap it off. :clap :clap :clap

It's been a fantastic forty-eight hours being a Karachite. :p

First title of any kind in any league run by me, I think. 2020 has been a weird year indeed! :p
The curse started with me losing the final of 2014 CWG with Pakistan. That was the first time I managed a team in this section, ever. It ends with Karachi lifting the LAB title. I need more years like 2020, minus the global pandemic and all. :p
