Lindsay Hassett's scintillating 174 in the second innings turned the match around after an evenly matched contest between both sides in alien conditions.

Vince van der Bijl picked up a tremendous 11 wickets for the match in spin-friendly conditions, only to end up on the losing side.

Australia sailed into the final with a 138-run victory. The South Africans still have another chance of progressing further when the play the semi-final against the winner of the eliminator.

Viv Richards was back to his best on a day when the West Indian quicks didn't quite dominate their opposition in the way they're used to. He was unlucky to miss out on a hundred in the first innings when the edged one onto his stumps, but made up for it with an even more domineering knock in the second innings. His quickfire 121 was good enough to even turn the usually aggressive Gordon Greenidge into a stonewaller. The pair did more than half the work for the West Indies who got themselves a semi-final berth by chasing down the 292 set by Australia.

Despite not doing much wrong other than running into Richards at his sublime best, Australia were eliminated from the competition. At least they won't have to head back home this time, because they're already there!
