Microsoft Flight Simulator Discussion

Yea sure I'll make you a little step by step guide. It's actually pretty simple.

Ok so this is how to use ILS, in a Cessna, it will be pretty similar in most aircraft.

Step 1: Get the airport, runway and ILS information

Find the airport you are going to. Click on "World" then "Map"

for this example I am using runway 25R at McCarran Intl in Las Vegas.

This is what it will look like on the map.

Click on the airport and this box will pop up.

scroll down to the runway information which looks like this:

Note down the ILS frequency (green circle) for the runway.

Step 2: Tuning the NAV radio to the ILS

Go to the radio stack (either in virtual cockpit or press Ctrl and 2)

Tune the frequency into the NAV Radio 1 (Red Circle)

Now press the Double Arrow (Green Circle) Button to switch from standy by to active frequency.

now it looks like this

Now the Runway 25r ILS frequency is on the active side (red circle) and should pop up in the VOR indicator (white circle) when you are close enough to the runway.

You can click the yellow circle and it will start to beep once you are in range for the ILS. These beeps are morse code that correspond with the runways ILS frequency so you can also use them to check that you are tuned into the proper frequency (no need for this in simulators though)

Hope that helped.

Some screens of what full traffic looks like, took almost 25 minutes to taxi to the active and get clearance!

Anytime, feel free to ask any more questions. Now that you know how to tune a NAV radio, try tuning to VORS and flying to them, its a good way to navigate.

Here is another screenie of Vegas, the default scenery is not bad and quite fun to fly around.

Elevator trim you bloody bitch! No wonder I kept stalling after take off with a Boeing-747.

Would have been nice if you could tune to a music channel on board, gets so boring flying.

Sucks they don't have Airbus 380 :(

Just a note - You can look up all the frequencies for ILS, ATIS etc on the GPS. You can also change your flight plan halfway through the flight with the direct to function. - I'll see if I can get fraps to work and do a little guide if anyones interested?

Looking up an airport's ATIS and entering into your radio stack is especially useful if you don't know the active runway of your destination. You have to set the nav stack to recieving both COMs.

ATIS - Service at an airport that, when tuned into, will tell you the weather conditions, active runway, sea level proximity etc.

To both I'd suggest downloading. I remember an add on in FS2004 whereby you could link a control panel of the plane to your music.

As for the Airbus - Betting you someones done a brilliant job of a complete add-on.

OH! one more thing - for those of you with FS2004, check out project opensky's concorde. Absolutley tweaking amazing. (Moving nose cone affects visuals unlike any other concorde add on, afterburners, whole panel). Do need a decent graphics card to run it well mind....

Sam if you are going to do a tutorial can you do it on Autoland and how exactly to use it.

I can't figure it out

Thanks, if your open to using a specific jet then the default 737-400 would be awesome

They all are like that, on the servers 2000 ,2004 and FSX can play together.

Covvy or Sam let me know if you are down this weekend. Perhaps do some short hops in formation.

I can right now, but I see your not online Mark. I'll come back no in a few hours and see if your online.
