Modern Warfare 2

Not much of importance has been released since E3. Unless you?re a hardcore MW fanboi like me, the trickle of minute info about the game ain?t gonna interest you. But I need an excuse to post here again, and community manager fourzerotwo posted the final cover art for the Xbox 360 version on his Twitter.

Amazingly, a badly-placed ?CoD? seems to be back in the title, after IW kept telling everyone it was just going to be called MW2. Probably not a huge surprise, since dropping CoD in the first place from the name cost ?em about half the potential followers since they didn?t realize MW2 was a follow-up to CoD4:MW. But while IW says nothing about it, Activision issues statement. One article.

And Robert B. then posts himself showing off all the different versions of the game, and unpacking the collector?s edition, the Prestige Edition (Price TBA) of the game.
The NVG looks temptingly OTT.

Something else you?d notice is is, the name CoD only shows up on the standard version ($60). Hardened?s $80.

Two specops characters were revealed by IW a while ago (1, 2). I?m no military expert, so knowing what IW revealed about Task Force 141, the first looks like a U.S. Navy Seal (I think), and the second British S.A.S Boat Troop?I think. And given that Bowling pretty much confirmed the Mohawk-S.A.S guy from the trailers to be Soap in this video?I guess then it is.

Do we know if there will be any new modes? Such as team based objective modes (not just CTF).

Other than the aforementioned SpecOps mode, no. IW seems real eager to hold on to talking about multiplayer for later on. Replacing the co-op compatible campaign from W@W, in SpecOps you and another buddy take on missions Mile High Club style (the bonus level on CoD4). For multiplayer, we only know that perks like the stopping power and the much-hated martyrdom return. Dogs return too, and no skidoos in MP. Anything else important I find, I'll post here. :)

cnbd_novice added about 5/6 Hours later...

Alrighty folks, suggested price for the Prestige Edition is $149. For that price, I'd be willing to sacrifice it.

What a waste of money, just buy the game and be done with it.

You can buy night-vision googles for $10 USD, seriously. Money-making scheme :laugh

What, they're seriously releasing Night vision goggles especially for the game? Oh dear. Trouble is, there will always be some saps around who will buy them.

They're charging an extra $90 USD (I think these figures are in USD) for a pair of crappy night vision goggles. The hardened copy has a book that comes with it. That book will be on the internet within hours, this is all just a way to make money.

Standard copy of the game - $60 USD

Hardened copy of the game - $80 USD

The "Prestige" copy of the game - $150 USD.

Pirated copy in Pakistan - $2 USD :p

Seriously, you have to be extremely rich and extremely dimwitted to buy that "prestige" copy.

Proper military NVGs cost well over several thousand USD. So anything cheap is pretty much guaranteed to be not the proper thing, but more of a gimmick - although I'd love to see one for 10 bucks only. =)

Speaking of money-making schemes, I expected more hype and teasing from IW if Activision still expects it to be the "biggest selling video game of all time."
Would you pay $90 for a $10 toy that has an infinity ward sticker on it, and waste $80, or go buy the $10 toy and draw your own infinity ward symbol on it (if you really care that much).

I'm just saying go to a toy store, and buy night vision goggles. It's going to be pretty much the same thing.

They better be putting more into the campaign if they want it to be 'the biggest seller of all time' - I don't think it will win that title on the back of online play only, especially if there aren't many new modes.

Well, Activision's doing pretty well to piss off CoD/MW fans. Pre-order price for the PC version's been $60 USD for a while now - 10 bucks more than normal PC games. Now Activision announced that in the UK, the game will be going for ?55 - 5 pounds higher than other games, blaming the rising price of Euro against the British pound. Read the Guardian as they try to explain how Activision is right to increase the game's price during a recession, but MW2's coming out in a holiday season when lots of other great games are, too - and if those publishers decide not to go down the same road as Activision, people might just have other games to pick up instead.

In other news, IW talks about more of the same of MW2 at NYC with the press, which included Kotaku. Confirmed was that the co-op SpecOps mode, which would include missions like underwater combat, skidoo races and the likes, would be the same length as the single player campaign itself.

PS: Oh and Gilly Fan, seems like no Wii version.

I'd imagine that's a likely price for the ordinary version at least.

Excuse me? ?55? You must be talking about the 'Prestige' version or something, surely?

That's a good deal for you - in fact all of the standard platform versions are priced at ?45 there. So yeah, I (Activision rather) actually meant the regular edition for the price tag of ?55 in the UK. The Prestige edition is supposedly priced at ?120...

US edition prices are mentioned in zMario's post above.
