The England and Wales Cricket Board has announced the appointment of former Sussex and Pakistan star Mushtaq Ahmed, 38, as a consultant spin-bowling coach.

His main role is with the slow bowlers in the Test and one-day squads, but he will also work in the performance and elite player development programmes.

ECB performance director David Parons said: "We believe Mushtaq can encourage youngsters at grass roots level."

Fantastic acquisition. I think he is the perfect person to take Monty on to the next level and he can have a huge impact on Rashid's career.

VERY good move. From all the talks that come out of Sussex during Mushy's time with them, a lot have said that the work he did with their youngsters and spinners around the county will actually be his defining legacy rather than his own performance. I have very high hopes for him.

Good player does not equal good coach, but it comes close when you have one of the most wiley bowlers to play the game who commands a fantastic amount of respect in England.

No, but Mushtaq has the perfect mentality for a coach. It's no coincidence that Ollie Rayner has had a good season.

Yeah, if you can play and coach at the same time, it says something. It's not just that the skills are in demand, but such a person has a rapport that holds up rather than dying off after his retirement. I'm sure this is even more important for Jeremy Snape, who seems to be well on his way to a mastery of sports psychology.
