No sound on any browser

At the start of the year I upgraded my PC (Everything new except HDD and Floppy), I decided against re-formatting the HDD to save time. I've had some issues with sound in other areas (have a 5:1 Creative surround sound, yet to get 3:1 I have to set the software to 7:1 ). But on Firefox/IE, I get no sound whatsoever. I'm running the latest flash version. The videos play fine, but no audio. I've checked videos through other websites, but I've not found any that work.

With the problems having been around from the start I have gone through all control panel settings I can think of and have checked the BIOS settings, and they match what they should be. I've also checked videos using IE7, doesn't work on that either.

Don't know if it makes any differences, but I'm using a wireless Linksys router and am on Virgin Broadband. Other media devices connected to it in the house play youtube and flash based video websites fine.

Please help me guys, I've had no response in 3 weeks from Mozilla. Am I missing some setting? I know just chucking new bits in and not re-installing the OS hasn't helped, but I'm too lazy to do the simple things in life!

You shouldn't have had to reinstall your OS after putting in new hardware.

Can you here sounds off the computer otherwise? Like if you open up an mp3 or an mpeg stored on your hard disk? Just trying to figure out if it is an issue with the browser or the way your computer is handling the sound.

Are these flash videos? or videos playing using embedded WMP? As Sohum says, can you hear other sounds?

I recently upgraded my system (vista) and had a problem with DRM protected media files, I had to reset my DRM. I'm guessing you are running XP. And I'd guess the same problem will occur because of the hardware upgrade. Again, as Sohum says, can you play MP3's?

Yes, I'm using WMP right now. Though WMP crashes whenever I put a USB stick in, related? First time someone has said something which may sound like it might work in about 3 months!

Try reinstalling the audio driver.

Alternatively,
Plug in a headphone in the headphone jack, and check if you are getting sound. I think the problem could be due to the jacks.

Get the KLITE Mega Codec pack if you don't have it already. If its a sound filter problem anywhere it'll reset as new are installed. Probably when you didn't reinstall the OS you didn't uninstall the old drivers either, and probably some how or the other they might still be hooked on to the filters and causing conflicts. Pretty messed up stuff this.

Try installing the Klite pack and see if its solved. You might just have a screwed up FLV codec.

Ah, didn't think of the audio drivers. Though I think it's using the same drivers (Realtek' AC 97) (I think the AC is there...)

I don't get any sound through headphones, even though the speakers work. That's either connecting the headphones through the jack on the on-board sound card or through the volume control device.

I'll try the KLITE codecs tonight.

I feel you need to find the latest drivers for your audio card, because the speakers are not being connected properly. If you cannot hear audio over the headphones, imo.. it has to do something with the audio configuration.
Is it a built-in sound card or a separate one??
And, you say that you are not getting 5.1 output??

What OS are you on??

Yes, built in sound card. I get 3:1 output, if I tell the PC to run a 7:1 output...

XP SP3. I believe the drivers are up to date.

Initial signs are that the Mega Codec pack hasn't worked, though I didn't restart the comp, not sure if I needed to or not, wasn't prompted to. Did a check and the drivers are up to date according to a driver tool I used.

Realtek AC'97 Audio

Driver version 5.10.0.5870

Dated back to end of 2006, but I can't find any thing more up to date. It must be a software issue otherwise why would WMP work?

The Codec pack definitely hasn't worked.

Kev, you mentioned resetting DRM? How do I go about doing that?

So I went to click on the England commentary on BBC radio on-line, and guess what? It works. Youtube is still deader than a do-do, though. Does that help at all? I'm thinking of trying Chrome in the next few days, as FF is too big when I'm clanning.

Thanks, first link didn't work, either idea.

Some things on the other, tried a couple didn't work, there was another but it involved removing and adding to the registry. I'm not doing that unless I have some time to properly sit down and play with it.

Strange.... are you sure it isn't on mute? :p

What operating system are you on? I'm guessing some edition of Vista since you do have IE7. When you got the BBC commentary working, was it in the same browser?

XP SP3. The BBC commentary opens up a new window, can't think what it's specific name, but it's like a pop-up...
