Good fight there by Gators. In the end, they just fall short by 8 runs. Gilchrist was brilliant with the bat for WA and Noffke was brilliant with the bowl for WA.

Excellent work, JC. :)

JC, are you planning season 2 for this? Might well make this more interesting by adding some managers maybe. Also, any chance we could get back that other story?

Super 8, Game 11: Capital Pulse v Northern Eagles

Eagles progress with good team effort

Martin Guptill was there at the end after making 57 not out

The Northern Eagles will be on a high after a satisfying win over their counterparts from the capital. They will make the playoffs at the expense of the Pulse, who would have been in the opposite position if they could have recorded a victory today. However it wasn't to be.

Batting first the Pulse were always in the battle but no one was able to go on after getting a start, and they had to rely on small contributions to get themselves to 141/8 - below par for the pitch, but at least something to bowl at. Of the small individual scores, left handers Michael Lumb and Yuvraj Singh posted the highest, with 28 and 29 respectively, while Tim Southee was the pick of the bowlers for the Eagles, picking up 3-11, and captain Vettori chipped in with 2 wickets at an economy rate of just 3.

The Pulse managed to take affairs into the final over but a well measured and calculatedly constructed innings from the Eagles was enough to see them home. Pulse wicketkeeper Chris Nevin had his moment of fame with a superb stumping standing up to none other than Jerome Taylor - and who but Sachin Tendulkar was his victim. From there though, Akmal continued his good form with a 62 which seemed to put the result beyond doubt - although plans went slightly astray when he was run out by Lumb, Martin Guptill looked world class in his 57, and together with Lou Vincent he saw the Eagles home with two balls to spare, to secure a place in the minor semi final.

Yeah, couldn't find a decent photo of Guptill. Probably coul've if I'd tried but sometimes other things in life take precedence...

Should be some more, better, updates in the next week.

Super 8, Game 12: Queensland Thunder v Souther Stallions

Oceania Premier League
Supreme Jayawardene stops Thunder in full cry

actualmatchlogo.png

MahelaJayawardene.png

Mahela Jayawardene made the highest score of the tournament with a great 130

The Queensland Thunder would have been sure they were on the verge of walking unbeaten into the major semifinal to meet the Diablos when they posted 196/3 against the Southern Stallions today.

Matthew Hayden had made another fantastic half century (78 from 50 balls) and although Akmal was brought back down to earth with a golden duck, Herschelle Gibbs, Lee Carseldine and JP Duminy were all amongst the runs to some extent. They were playing on a good pitch but if you make near 200, on any pitch you ought to be favourites to win.

However, Mahela Jayawardene clearly didn't think so.
With a simply amazing innings in which he barely hit the ball in the air, but stroked the ball strongly along the ground for a barrage of fours, he powered the Stallions to a miraculous victory. No bowler was spared from his treatment, as the Stallions galloped home with 13 balls to spare.

And suddenly we realised that, having looked good for a six run unbeaten streak into the major semifinal, the Thunder would now be knocked out of the tournament - because of the Stallions thumping victory over the Gators they would qualify first in the group, and the Waccas (also on two wins) would edge out the Thunder on run rate. It did seem desperately unfair but, as the saying goes, "That's cricket."

That was an great inning from Jayawardene. Excellent chase from SS, all thanks to Jayawardene.

139 off 59 from Mahela, that's incredible by someone who's not normally considered when you talk about explosive T20 batsmen like Warner and Sehwag etc.

Good to see the the Eagles progress, hopefully they can go all the way. If not, then I'll be backing the Stallions.

Look at that. 130 chased down with more than 2 overs to spare. Clinical performance by Stallion, oops, Jayawardene. :p

Another excellent update there JC. Amazing writeup and as usual great effort on the kits. :clap

Super 8 Summary and Playoff Fixtures

Oceania Premier League
Fixtures: How the Finals work

At the conclusion of the Super 8 stage, 4 teams have failed to qualify - some by very small margins or pieces of luck - but the fact remains that only 4 teams now have a chance to claim the first title of the Oceania Premier League.

The points tables for the Super 8 were:

Group A:
GroupA.png

The Tasmania Diablos convincing winners, winning all of their games, and fairly comfortably too - they have earnt a home major semifinal as they are the team from the Super 8 with the most points. Meanwhile The Pacific Lions didn't lack spirit but three consecutive losses could only rule them out, while the Northern Eagles triumphed over the Capital Pulse in what was basically a quarter final - the winner would end up progressing to the semifinals, and in the end it was the Eagles.

Group B:
GroupB.png

Aside from the Gators who suffered two heavy defeats and a close loss to cap it off, the remaining three teams all finished with 6 points. In the end the Southern Stallions were essentially rewarded for a thumping win over the Gators, while the Thunder were surprisingly edged out on net run rate in favour of the Western Waccas, after looking good for a place in the major semifinal five sixths of their way through the Super 8.

HowFinalsWork.png

The Major semi final involves the top qualifiers from Group A and Group B, the Tasmania Diablos and the Southern Stallions. The Diablos will host it, as they had more points, and the winner of the game is fast tracked into the Grand Final, while the loser gets another chance, in the final playoff:

Tasmania Diablos v Southern Stallions at Bellrieve Oval, Hobart 27th January

Therefore the minor semifinal obviously involves the two teams who qualified second in their groups - the Northern Eagles and the Western Waccas. As both teams finished on equal points, the Eagles will host the match because they had a better net run rate. The winner of the match qualifies for the final playoff while the for the loser, their campaign is over for the year:

Northern Eagles v Western Waccas at Seddon Park, Hamilton 28th January

Then the final playoff - essentially a semifinal in traditional playoffs - the winner goes into the final while the loser is out:

Loser Major Semi v Winner Minor Semi at TBC 1 February

And then of course the biggest game of them all - a festival type showdown which will decide who is crowned champions of the inaugural Oceania Premier League:

Winner Major Semi v Winner Playoff at TBC 4 February
