England have not been to the Subcontinent since Phil Tufnell spun them to victory eight years ago, and just like that tour there are a lot of changes from the squad that played so well in the summer. There are two fresh faces looking for England selection: Ashley Giles averaged over 40 with the bat and under 25 with the ball in this year's Championship to underline an enormously strong case for selection on this tour, while Vikram Solanki's ability to play spin bowling has jumped him above several more favoured batters and into his first-ever England squad. There is also a recall for hitherto one-Test wonder Ian Salisbury. Of him, coach Duncan Fletcher said: "Of course Ian's debut was chastening all those years ago, but since then he has bowled Surrey to two successive Championship titles. In 2000, he took 52 wickets at 18.9 and the year before it was 60 wickets at 21.9. He's at his best, and at the moment he's England's best leg-spinner." Of course Tufnell will be the first-choice spinner, but there is quite the dogfight behind him to settle on who will be the second. And not only that, but there is talk of Chris Read possibly being picked ahead of Nixon on account of his highly-regarded keeping ability.

Pakistan win the toss and choose to bat

- - -

Nick Knight still can't win a toss, and on this occasion he might really have preferred to bat first. He has two front-line spinners in his team to go with only two front-line seamers, so the team's strategy is very clear. On the bright side (for the player in question) it has also made room for Graeme Hick to be recalled to the team for the first time in a while as he seeks to arrest his post-captaincy form slump. Pakistan meanwhile have no fewer than four spinners to call on, and will get to bowl last on a pitch that is expected to break up badly under the scorching Asian sun.

The first day was one for the understudies as out of the England bowlers it was Craig White (usually a third- or fourth-choice seamer) and Graeme Swann (definitely the second-choice spinner) who had things their own way. White started things off by taking the wickets of both opening batters in the unfamiliar (to him) role of opening bowler. Then when he had to be rested and England turned to spin, it was Swann - not Tufnell - who made hay against the middle-order. He had a huge hand in reducing Pakistan from 183 for three to 272 for nine and claimed his maiden Test five-wicket haul in the process. Not that Pakistan are exactly known for giving up without a fight: Wasim Akram may be coming in to bat at number nine lately, but his Test best of 257 not out should be more than enough to show that he's a proper batter and must be taken seriously. He slogged his way all the way to 94 before having to watch on as the last-wicket stand of 108 was snuffed out by another Swann off-break.

The English batting started well under clear skies as the prolific opening pair of Knight and Trescothick added another century stand to their ever-growing tally. A mini-collapse upon the fall of Knight was then averted when the old opening pair of Stewart and Atherton (now batting at three and five) added a century stand of their own. All four men scored half-centuries. Of course this is a very challenging Pakistan team, and their pair of Mushtaqs had the skill and talent to turn the game back around: first Saqlain, then Mushtaq got in the wickets to preserve a slender but important lead for the home side.

It would clearly be very important for the English team to keep a tight leash on their opponents and they... didn't really do that. Instead, things started to get out of hand with the big partnership between Elahi and Inzamam, and would only get worse as Abbas, Moin and Wasim would each add fun-filled contributions. As the lead got beyond what could reasonably be chased down, Knight turned to some part-time bowling and further disaster struck: Marcus Trescothick, the revelation of the home summer, sustained a hamstring strain that ultimately brought his Test match to a premature end.

Thus the fourth innings of the Test was not about a run-chase, instead it was a battle for survival. Atherton (opening again) understood this, and employed the deadest of dead bats. If only others had been able to say the same: Knight and Stewart both fell early in the innings to the opening bowlers and then things just crumbled. Graham Thorpe continued his sorry run of form since being promoted to number four with a duck, and only Paul Nixon was able to offer any support at all to Atherton. When Mullally became the last man out, Atherton just stood at the non-striker's end for a couple of minutes as if expecting Trescothick to emerge from the pavilion. But, with over two sessions left in the game, there was no point injuring him further and Atherton was stranded on a strokeless, boundaryless, and ultimately hopeless 21 not out.

Pakistan win the toss and choose to bat

- - -

With Trescothick ruled out on the morning of the Test - still lacking a working hamstring - England made their one enforced change by replacing him with an additional bowling option in the form of Martin Bicknell. On the other side, Pakistan (as always) went against the adage that you never change a winning team by bringing in two new spinners: Arshad Khan and Danish Kaneria in for Qaiser Abbas and Mushtaq Ahmed. It certainly seems chaotic but we're rather accustomed to this being the Pakistan way. For comparison, the English way is to lose the toss and be sent out to field first, which is exactly what happened again in Faisalabad.

Pakistan made the most of first use of a clearly tricky pitch. Young Shahid Afridi, aged somewhere between 20 and 25, made a composed and stroke-filled start to the innings. He contributed heavily to an excellent century stand alongside number three Saleem Elahi. Once the England spinners had removed those two batters, the balance of power shifted. First Swann managed to add the wickets of Inzamam and Yousuf, then Mullally and Bicknell returned to the bowling crease. Both were excellent, and were rewarded with all five of the remaining Pakistani wickets. Although an unbeaten half-century from Moin Khan helped his team to reach 342 all out by the middle of the game's fourth session, the game was still very much in the balance at this point.

Of course, nothing is ever certain when you're looking at the prospect of facing the legend that is Wasim Akram. The great left-armer claimed the first three England wickets, all of which fell before the score had reached 30. With an open wound like that, the opportunity was perfect for Saqlain Mushtaq to take advantage. The man commonly considered to be the world's best off-spinner reaffirmed that status with a staggering spell of bowling that ended the only England partnership of any real substance (73 between Hick and Thorpe) and went on to claim five English wickets in quick succession. The paltry 217 that England were held to left them 125 runs behind and staring down the barrel of a series defeat with a Test still to play.

That would be enough to take the pressure off any batting order, let alone one with as much ability as this Pakistan team. Saeed Anwar made his second strong contribution of the series in the form of a fluent 69, only to be put firmly in the shade by a terrific 143 from Mohammad Yousuf. Both of the English opening bowlers again performed well, but there was a certain futility to Mullally completing his five-wicket haul with Pakistan already more than 450 runs in front.

Playing for a distant and unlikely draw is something of a speciality of England's Michael Atherton, and both he and Knight applied themselves to the task with the utmost dedication. Despite the English second innings beginning very early on Day Four, they reached the second new ball, then the start of Day Five without losing a single wicket. Then the fifth lunch break came - still no English wicket. By now the opening stand was in excess of 200 - 140 to Knight, 67 to Atherton with a handful of extras. Finally, after 137 overs of deeply tedious cricket, the first wicket fell as Atherton edged a Kaneria leg-break through to Moin Khan. By then it was far too late for Pakistan to pull a victory out of anywhere, but Nick Knight was able to put the finishing touch on an incredible monument of a captain's innings: an unbeaten fourth-innings double-century. Those don't come along very often.

So naturally, for some reason the home broadcaster chose to give the Man of the Match award to Mohammad Yousuf.

England win the toss and choose to bat

- - -

Going into this series-deciding Test match, there were plenty of changes on both sides. The fit-again Trescothick returned to the England team (although he had not been cleared to bowl), coming back in place of Graeme Hick. Despite Atherton's heroics in the second Test, Knight confirmed that Trescothick would be opening and that Atherton would be batting at number four. Further down the order, a debut has been handed to Vikram Solanki who is hoped to be the answer to the English struggles against Pakistan's spinners. And finally, a long-awaited recall has been given to Ian Salisbury, who replaces the rhythmless Phil Tufnell - the left-armer has claimed only six wickets all series at more than 60 apiece. Pakistan meanwhile have continued to ring the changes with Wasim Akram and Arshad Khan out of the side and replaced by Imran Nazir and Waqar Younis. However, the biggest change might just be the fact that Nick Knight managed to win a toss for a change, jumping at the opportunity to bat first.

Despite the great opportunity, England didn't make the best of it at all. Knight made a half-century at the top of the order before losing his wicket in Younis' second spell, but by then Trescothick, Stewart and Atherton had all been dismissed. Indeed, the regular fall of wickets was a problem throughout the England innings. No partnership greater than the openers' 42 was compiled anywhere in the batting order, and apart from Knight and Thorpe there was nobody who survived for long against the Pakistani spinners. The leg- and off-spin combination was devastating.

The Pakistani reply was built squarely around another stellar century from Mohammad Yousuf. The right-hander compiled a profoundly elegant 131 before being the last man out in the Pakistani innings. He was one of three victims to fall to Ian Salisbury as the Surrey man proved that he is indeed an improved bowler: first, he dismissed Moin Khan for 53, then later on claimed Younis for a duck and Yousuf to finish the innings. Although his figures were less impressive than those of Bicknell or Swann, they were so much better than his debut that they most definitely merited mention. Indeed, Bicknell's first three wickets - dismissing the entire top three in quick succession - were absolute highlight reel moments, emphasising that he really belongs in an England shirt.

Unfortunately for England, even this bowling effort left them facing a substantial first-innings deficit. If they wanted to save anything from this match then a lot was about to sit on the shoulders of Nick Knight and his fellow batters. But let nobody say that the England captain did not rise to the occasion. After Waqar Younis dismissed both Trescothick and Stewart in quick succession, Knight dug in with Atherton and again refused to let Pakistan get the best of them. Between them they built an absolutely game-changing partnership of 218. As at Faisalabad, it was Knight who dominated the scoring. After surviving a dropped catch, he played with far more freedom to race to his eventual 152. Having flipped the entire narrative of the game on its head, he could then watch on from the England balcony as Atherton also found support from Thorpe (72) and the debutant Solanki (63) as the Lancastrian passed his century and kept going. On and on he batted until finally he matched his captain's 202 from the previous Test. Finally, a last-wicket partnership of eleven was enough to take England to their highest Test score since 1985.

From such a position, Pakistan couldn't possibly hope to win the Test. They might perhaps have hoped not to lose, but after more than two days in the field they were clearly exhausted and they batted like it. Equally, the English bowlers (particularly Mullally and Bicknell) bowled like a team who had had two and a bit days of rest. They shared nine wickets between them with the tenth going to Salisbury. Pakistan folded for only 138 and the Test series ended in a stalemate.

At least this time the media didn't choose to anoint Mohammad Yousuf as Man of the Match (that was Atherton) or Man of the Series (Knight). What a roller coaster.

It's been a very long time, but here's a stats and records update after the Pakistan series. This is also my first post in this thread since I became the proud owner of Raspberry Ripple. Everybody say "Hello Ripple!"

The Sri Lanka series will also be played on a new game - who knows whether that will count against the likes of Nick Knight who did so well on CC2020

In the aftermath of a tough tour of Pakistan, the England selectors have kept faith with almost the entire touring party from the previous series. The only major changes come in the form of Andrew Flintoff's inclusion in the team ahead of Warwickshire's Ashley Giles. Although this does leave England with one fewer spin bowing option, team management are said to have been very encouraged by his 60-ball 84 in a one-day international against Pakistan. In that series he played as a specialist batter due to injury, and it is currently unclear whether the Lancastrian will be fit to take on a bowling role in Sri Lanka.

England win the toss and choose to bat

- - -

With a typical-looking Galle pitch expected to deteriorate markedly as the game went on, it looked like being an all-important toss. Nick Knight was the winning captain, and he announced that England would bat. There were a couple of changes to the XI from the last Pakistan Test, with Phil Tufnell returning in place of Salisbury and Craig White coming in for Solanki to offer a bit of extra support to the two main seamers, Bicknell and Mullally. This is certainly a strong Sri Lankan team they're up against, and one known for being experts at winning in their own conditions.

As has become their trademark, the English opening pair of Knight and Trescothick got things off to an excellent start. It took until shortly after the tea break on the first day for a wicket to fall, when a Murali doosra turned back through the gate of Trescothick. Perhaps his concentration had been broken by celebrating his fourth Test century the ball before. Stewart and Knight then combined for an almost identical partnership, with their aggregate only six runs less than the 190-run opening stand. This partnership too was ended by a Murali doosra, this time Stewart edged it to Jayawardene at slip and he had to trudge off for an excellent 99. Finally, with around half an hour left on the second day, Nick Knight would fall. He had made yet another Test double-century, a true captain's innings of 202 with 21 boundaries. When umpire Peter Manuel signalled his dismissal, he and Atherton broke into a jog, declaring the innings closed without warning for the Sri Lankans.

The hosts negotiated the tricky period without loss, but had no such luck on the third morning. First, Atapattu fell for a scratchy 13, then Jayasuriya's blazing 47 was ended the following over: the wickets falling to Martin Bicknell and Craig White. White would then make it two before lunch when he found Aravinda de Silva's edge into the safe hands of Nick Knight at second slip. The next phase of the game was all about spin, as Tufnell and Swann turned the screw with three crucial middle-order wickets between them in the afternoon session. The sole resistance came from Kumar Sangakkara, but the young left-hander's prize for lasting so long was a tricky period against the second new ball. In Mullally's hand, it was incredibly difficult to play, and Sangakkara was just one of three victims for the world-class left-armer. Finally, Craig White polished off the tail to secure a 244-run lead for England.

With just minutes left of the third day, they enforced it - the fast bowlers would get a full night of rest as the last couple of overs were bowled by England's spinners. And it was Swann who ended the day's play five balls early with the crucial wicket of Jayasuriya, caught at mid-on aiming a swipe at a horrible full-toss. Unlike in the first innings, Sangakkara was able to find a partner to stick with him: Russell Arnold (93) proved a valuable foil for the elegant number three, as England's four main bowlers started to tire. It was Mullally who cracked open the door to the tailenders with a brute of a ball to Tillakaratne Dilshan, but Craig White who emphatically slammed it shut behind him as he polished off the last three wickets in the space of a few minutes to keep England's target down to a very manageable 67 runs from the remaining session and a half. By clean bowling Muttiah Muralitharan for the second time in the match, White claimed his 100th Test wickets, which have so far cost him 33.36 apiece.

Attacking plans from the Sri Lankan seamers, Fernando in particular, gave the England team a bit of a scare, but the clutch of wickets did at least ensure that Graham Thorpe - who had not previously got to bat or bowl - had something to do in the match, even if he was the non-striker when Craig White biffed the winning runs off a Fernando bouncer.

Sri Lanka win the toss and choose to bat

- - -

After a staggering performance in the first Test, England arrived in Kandy completely unchanged. There was some talk of replacing Bicknell (who had seemed ineffective on the slow Galle wicket) with the extra pace of Alex Tudor, but ultimately Duncan Fletcher ultimately chose not to change his winning combination. Sri Lanka also swapped out the genuinely quick Dilhara Fernando for the slower and more accurate Nuwan Zoysa, so there is at least a consensus that Kandy will not reward extra pace. This time it was Jayasuriya who won the toss, and the home side surprised absolutely nobody by opting to bat first.

Almost immediately, the home captain got his side off to a horror start by edging Mullally straight to Marcus Trescothick in the slips. This was part of a staggering opening spell in which Bicknell and Mullally conceded only 16 runs while bowling unchanged through the first 16 overs of play. As expected, there was not a great deal of life in the pitch, so the English bowlers were relying on sheer discipline. This predictably waned as the bowlers tired, and Sri Lanka's two best batters really cashed in: Kumar Sangakkara recorded his second century of the series, ably supported by Aravinda de Silva (67). However, the cherry on top was an unbeaten career-best 83 not out from Kumar Dharmasena - not someone renowned for scoring runs at this level.

With scoreboard pressure from Sri Lanka's 437, the English batters would really have to bat well to avoid any tricky situations as the pitch started to wear. Losing Marcus Trescothick for only 11 was not the start they would have liked, but after that things started to look up for the visitors. Nick Knight made a very breezy 61, but it paled in comparison to a huge 252-run partnership between the excellent Alec Stewart and Graham Thorpe. The Surrey duo put on their 21st and 9th Test centuries respectively: Stewart was eventually caught on the off side for 164, and Thorpe quickly followed for a career-best 137. Cameos from White, Swann and Nixon were enough to bag England a handy first-innings lead of 51 runs.

Mullally made it twice in two innings that he removed Jayasuriya cheaply, the catch this time being taken by Paul Nixon behind the stumps. And that was the last wicket to fall to an England seam bowler in the Test: Phil Tufnell and Graeme Swann posted combined figures of nine for 86 from 42.1 overs, a truly outstanding performance as a spin partnership. The young Northants off-spinner also picked up his second Test five-wicket haul, propelling England into a fascinating position: they would need 131 runs to win on a day five pitch against one of the best spinners of all time.

Amazingly, that spinner (Murali, obviously) did not manage to take a single wicket. He couldn't get past the broad bat of Marcus Trescothick, who played a masterclass for an unbeaten 69 as his team won the Test by seven wickets and took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.

Sri Lanka win the toss and choose to bat

- - -

With the series already decided, both teams arrived in Colombo having made changes to their playing XIs. For England, Alex Tudor came in to replace the struggling Bicknell, and Vikram Solanki came into the side in place of Michael Atherton, in order to manage a long-standing back complaint. For Sri Lanka, Dilhara Fernando returned to the team, while Dinuka Hettiarachchi came in to replace Dharmasena, whose bowling has been disappointing despite his batting success. Jayasuriya won his second successive toss, which meant that Hettiarachchi would start his Test career with his feet up, hoping not to be needed for at least a day.

Much to Hettiarachchi's dismay, he was needed on the first day. This was because of some stellar performances from the English spin duo yet again: Tufnell and Swann each took an excellent three-wicket haul on a Day One pitch that absolutely wasn't misbehaving. Then Craig White waltzed back into the bowling attack yet again to clean up the tailenders. With an hour of play left on the first day, the fast bowlers were strapping on their bowling boots to try to wrest their way back into the game.

They did not wrest their way back into the game. Knight and Trescothick saw the tourists safely through to the close of play, and then Knight capitalised with yet another high-quality captain's innings. Knight's place among the very best Test opening batters in the world cannot be in question now as he posts his eleventh Test century in only his 39th Test match. And he doesn't just reach 100 either - he keeps going: this innings topped out at 160 before he fell to Muttiah Muralitharan. Graham Thorpe, who had batted higher than he is used to at number four, fell just short of his own century, becoming Hettiarachcchi's maiden Test wicket on 91. A final breezy cameo from Graeme Swann saw England all the way up to 450 before an aggressive declaration from Knight sent Sri Lanka's batters back out into the firing line just before tea on the third day.

What a moment then for the English bowlers to unite and create their most uniformly excellent bowling performance of the entire winter. Alan Mullally claimed yet another top-order wicket before Alex Tudor claimed both Jayasuriya and Sangakkara in quick succession. Sri Lanka were reeling at 29 for three, still 233 runs away from making England bat again. Against a spin attack as good as England's, that was always going to be a big ask, and ultimately they couldn't do it. Tufnell and Swann claimed five wickets between them before Craig White stepped up yet again to clean up the tail. It seems he might have carved out a niche for himself.

And just like that, England have won a series in the Subcontinent by three Tests to nil, with a final comprehensive victory by an innings and 126 runs.

And with that staggering winter performance, Nick Knight has comprehensively won his first ever Barrington Medal. Across six Test matches in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, he managed an aggregate of 915 runs at 91.50, including scores of 202 not out, 152, 202 (again) and 160. What an impressive run of form from the England captain.

Rankings, records and stats all updated. Graeme Swann looking like the natural successor to Phil Tufnell at this point which is one problem with doing a playthrough this way when players are rated according to their reputation once their entire careers are done very exciting; we are still looking for a Dean Headley replacement though - could this lead to us playing two spinners at home in the summer?

With the return to the seaming tracks of England in May, England's squad composition returns to one of having lots of seam bowling options available. Andy Caddick has been recalled, and Matthew Hoggard possibly in line for a Test debut ahead of the Ashes series later in the summer. In addition to Martin Bicknell, who struggled in Sri Lanka, Graeme Hick has also lost his place in the Test squad and has been replaced by the in-form Kent batter David Fulton. Although the Kent man is usually an opener, it is thought that if he makes his debut it is likely to be in the middle order: both Knight and Trescothick have an iron grip on the opening positions. It will also be interesting to see whether Paul Nixon retains his place behind the stumps; he has hardly put a foot wrong for England, but there is also a definite sense of Chris Read being the coming man. His keeping has been flawless for Nottinghamshire.

England win the toss and choose to bat

- - -

Despite still being in his words "fully committed" to Test cricket, Michael Atherton will sit out the first Test of the summer as England hands a well-deserved Test debut to David Fulton. Indeed, they have chosen to go with only four bowlers for this Test match, giving the impression that this might be a straight shoot-out between Fulton and Solanki for the role of first reserve batter come the Ashes. Hopefully England have not lost sight of the task at hand though, which is to beat this tricky Pakistan side. The tourists have left out both of their famous Mushtaqs, opting for an all-seam attack here at Lord's. Despite that attack and some cloud cover, Knight still opted to bat when he won the toss.

Sometimes, Wasim Akram is just too good. That was certainly what Knight and Trescothick found, as they both fell to the swing and guile of the legendary left-armer inside the first couple of overs. Debutant Fulton soon followed, blasted out by Waqar Younis to leave England reeling. Alec Stewart attempted to lead some resistance, but despite he, Thorpe and Solanki all getting settled (the latter for an incredible free-flowing 40), all were ultimately undone by the Pakistan seamers. The only person who made it to fifty was Paul Nixon. Although he was batting with the tail from number eight, he was able to crunch boundaries and run hard to almost single-handedly drag England past 200. He was the last man out, bowled attempting a swipe off Akram.

What looked like being a dreadful day was slightly redeemed as England picked up two wickets in the last two overs of Day One. First, Tufnell managed to spin one through the gate of Saeed Anwar, then Craig White made Saleem Elahi snick off to the slips. Unfortunately, there was little respite from the blazing London sun and the English bowlers started to tire. The batters at the crease when that happened were Abdul Razzaq and Younis Khan, and the pair of them absolutely cashed in: Razzaq made a career-best 156, while Younis outdid him with a splendid unbeaten 197, although he was very hard done by with the declaration from his captain Waqar Younis. Pakistan's 500-run effort left England needing almost 300 just to bat again.

Unfortunately for England, Wasim was simply unplayable. He picked out the wickets of Nick Knight and Alec Stewart early on, but was otherwise in the unfortunate position of bowling almost too well to get wickets: the batters weren't edging, they were missing. Instead, Younis, Mahmood and Akhtar shared out the wickets of the England middle-order as it couldn't stand up to the fast bowling onslaught. The two best contributions came from the team's newest players: Fulton managed a solid 40, and Solanki an elegant 58 before each lost their wickets. When the tail arrived, Wasim returned and this time he got his reward: the wickets of Nixon, Tudor and Tufnell helped him to finish with a very cheap five-for indeed.

This loss, coming by the margin of an innings and 81 runs, is England's worst for quite some time. It will be tricky to so much as pick out three players to award Barrington Medal points to.

Pakistan win the toss and choose to bat

- - -

Needing to win the match in order to avoid their first home series defeat since South Africa in 1998, England came into this Test match with a strengthened bowling attack featuring both Andy Caddick and Matthew Hoggard. This mean that there was no place for David Fulton, while Solanki kept his place ahead of Atherton. We are assured that the Lancastrian is "fit to play a full part in The Ashes", but it remains to be seen what his future holds in this England team. Pakistan meanwhile look even stronger than in the first Test, thanks to the addition of Saqlain Mushtaq. Saleem Elahi has also been dropped, with Abdul Razzaq moving up to open the innings. To say the least, an unfamiliar role for him and one that he'll have to get into right away because Waqar Younis won the toss and chose to bat first.

The makeshift opening pair absolutely did their job, combining for a century stand that really frustrated the English bowlers. Razzaq made another half-century before falling to the bowling of Andy Caddick; the Kiwi-born Somerset man finding a bit of extra bounce. From there, England started to fight back: Alan Mullally's wicket of Faisal Iqbal was the start of a collapse of 98 for nine, which also finished with newfound tail-end specialist Craig White sweeping up the last four wickets to fall. I'm sure all the other seamers would like a similar chance to take cheap wickets, but none has been quite as good at this particular task as White recently.

With Pakistan's 272 looking a relatively manageable marker, the English batters set to the treacherous task of trying to score runs off Wasim and Waqar. It didn't go fantastically, but four batters did at least make decent scores across two partnerships. The first pairing was Knight (43) and Stewart (56), but both would ultimately fall to Waqar Younis before they could make really telling contributions. The second pairing was Solanki (45) and White (53), but both would ultimately fall to Waqar Younis before they could make really telling contributions. This was a theme: Younis also took the wickets of Thorpe and Trescothick to finish with hard-earned figures of six for 73 in a spell for the ages. He single-handedly secured a lead of 23 for his team.

However, the English team had a star swing bowler of their own - they just didn't realise it yet. Debutant Matthew Hoggard charged in and had already taken the wickets of both Saeed Anwar and Faisal Iqbal before Pakistan had even scored a run. He then added Inzamam, Yousuf and Abdul Razzaq to record his first Test five-for with the first five wickets of the innings. He wouldn't get another though because even he needs to rest at some point, and when he did Andy Caddick simply carried on the carnage from the same end. Between them, the pair recorded analysis of nine wickets for 103 runs, the sole remaining wicket falling to Phil Tufnell. England, against all the odds after the first Test, were in with a strong chance of levelling the series. They needed exactly 200 to win, and had a bit over two days left to get them in.

Knight and Trescothick crafted a vital opening partnership of 60, although it is certainly a reflection on the Pakistani bowling that neither batter managed to pass 50 in the entire series. Wasim Akram claimed both of their wickets as well as that of noted chase specialist Alec Stewart to leave England tottering, 131 runs still needed and a huge amount of responsibility on the shoulders of Graham Thorpe. But he shouldered that responsibility and carried his team home with a magnificent unbeaten 77, although huge credit must also go to Andy Caddick, who contributed 14 not out in a partnership of 50 for the seventh wicket; without him, Thorpe may well have run out of partners to bat with.

Instead, England have levelled the series 1-1, and will have renewed confidence in their five-bowler strategy after the four-bowler blip of the First Test. Roll on The Ashes!
